Welcome

Tena koutou katoa,

We have lots of information and celebration for you in this edition of the newsletter, so buckle up and get ready for the ride! By the way, in Vicky's absence, it's me (Sue) who is putting the newsletter together. So if there are peculiar fonts or weird layouts - sorry!

UHPS Values

Our Values assemblies over the past two weeks have continued to focus on manaakitanga. This week, the message is to “Share a Smile” and last week it was to “be quick to say ‘sorry’” (ask your child about Mrs Smith and the shopping trolley!).

Winter Bugs

There are some nasty bugs (including hand, foot and mouth disease) making their way through the school so please, if your child is unwell or contagious, keep them at home. Otherwise you may well get a call from the office to come and collect them.

Introducing Dave McCarthy

Dave joined us at the beginning of this term and is teaching in Rm 2/3 with Emma Thompson. Dave is from Nova Scotia, Canada and has heaps of experience as an ice hockey coach and outdoor education instructor. He really impressed us during his interview and is already contributing to the school in many ways. If you pass a motorcyclist on your way up or down Kyle Road, take extra care because it could just be Dave!

News

RNZAF School to Skies

On Friday 9th August we had a visit from the RNZAF School to Skies team. There was great excitement when they pulled into the school and began to unload, then assemble a small aircraft! Our Year 5 & 6 children had learning sessions with the team and all our children had the opportunity to queue up and climb into the cockpit during break times. A big thank you to our RNZAF neighbours for making this possible.

Thank You

We would like to thank Amy and Claire Van Zyl, Tony Liu and the Sandison family who have kindly donated new books to our school library.  It is very important for our young readers to have access to a selection of books to help them learn through reading. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. We accept donations of both new and pre-loved books.  Just drop them off to the office, making sure to include your name.

Sharing Our Learning

Please note a change of time for this term’s Sharing Our Learning Dance Performances. The event will run from 3.30pm - 5.30pm and teams will follow a performance schedule to be advised. This is because we can’t fit all our parents and whanau in the hall at one time. While your child isn’t performing in the hall, you are welcome to wander through their classroom with them to share the other learning that they have been doing this term.

Music Workshops - (Advertisement)

Last Tuesday, the Music Education Centre hosted our Music workshops at Upper Harbour Primary School, to help educate and inspire the next generation of rock stars! We covered the fundamentals of music and even got some students up on stage to form an improvised band! I’m sure you’ll be seeing some videos from the teachers! At the Music Education Centre, our students don’t just learn, they develop as people. MEC students have: Improved coordination, boosted confidence, reduced screen time and musicality for life!

Want to start your child on their journey to developing a lifelong passion for music? You can sign up by clicking the below link and filling out our form. Or you can call us on 0800 89 39 39. Places are limited, so make sure you get in quick and give your child the gift of music!

Many families experience times of hardship, when it’s difficult to make ends meet and the day to day costs of life might seem insurmountable. Did you know that Variety have support to help disadvantaged Kiwi kids have the childhood that all kids deserve. Kiwi Kid Sponsorship can help to provide a child aged 5-15 years with the basic essentials that their family/caregiver is unable to afford. Items include bedding, clothing, school and healthcare costs. Click on this link to see what assistance might be available for your family or someone else you care about.

Sports

Registrations for the following term 4 sports are now open.

Spring Hockey

Spring Netball

Touch Rugby

Please note if your child was playing winter hockey or netball and they wish to play spring hockey or netball, a new registration must be made.

Registrations close on Friday 6th September at 3pm.

Last week 45 of our students represented UHPS at the Northern Bays Cluster Winter Sports Day. We had teams competing in football, netball, miniball and hockey. All of them did us proud, competing hard and fair and trying their best. Thanks to Emma Thompson, Kirsten Dolfing, Dave Mc Carthy and Kirsty Howlett.
