This Weeks Welcome

Tena koutou katoa,

This is our first newsletter in Term 2, so I’d like to say a warm welcome back and I hope your family enjoyed some great times together during the holidays.

I had a fantastic trip to South Korea, as one of a group of NZ educators. We spent time in Seoul, Gyeongju and Busan, visiting schools and Provincial Offices of Education. It was really interesting to learn more about the Korean education system and the reforms that they are introducing in order to encourage creativity and wellbeing. It wasn’t all work though and we did plenty of sightseeing. Highlights included the street food markets in Busan, the N Seoul Tower, Gyeongbok Palace, Anapji Pond, the DMZ (Demilitarised Zone) and Nanta Show in Seoul.

There’s lots coming up at UHPS so please watch out for the adverts and posters. This Friday is Wonder Women Day and the children are looking forward to sharing our morning with mums, aunties, grandmas etc. The following Friday is Pink Shirt Day, in support of the anti-bullying message. A gold coin donation will go to the Mental Health Foundation.

We certainly have a staff who are adventurers and explorers! We are very sad to say that we will be farewelling Michael Barry at the end of Week 5 this term. Michael and Miranda are off to Canada for a new adventure and we wish them all the very best. Michael came to us as a Beginning Teacher and quickly became a valued member of the team, particularly in the areas of ICT and sport.

Possible Strike Action

Teachers are attending Paid Union Meetings this week to vote on future action. We will keep you posted with any news as it becomes available.

Board of Trustees Elections

You should have now received your copy of the nomination form for Board of Trustees elections.
Please note that any nominations received after 12 noon on Friday 24th May will not be accepted.

Paula is our school librarian and also looks after our resource room. She’s been busy lately, as the alterations joining Library and Paua Pod have been happening.

Paula was born and raised in Christchurch and worked as a Team Leader in the banking industry. She moved up to Auckland, with her husband and children, ten years ago, before the earthquakes. Both children, Emma and Adam, followed our local learning pathway, through UHPS, AJHS and ASHS. Not long after moving into the area, Paula began volunteering in the school office and later applied for a position advertised. Paula spends lots of her spare time at the gym, particularly boxing. She also loves walking, listening to music and travel. Paula’s most recent travel took them to Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore and Koh Samui. There are two other members of the Webster family - two cats, one of them a young kitten.

Vicky is often the person on the other end of the phone when you call the school and the one who designs the eye-catching posters that advertise our events. Those are only two aspects to an extremely varied role which also includes helping our children in the Health Room.

Vicky is married to Sean and they have two children, Adam and Leah, who are both at college. The family also has a much-loved rescue dog named Rosie. Vicky grew up in Bexhill-on-Sea, a seaside town on the South East coast of England. Sean was a Kiwi lad, in the UK on his big OE, when they met at a Rotaract (Young Rotary) function. The rest is history and they moved over to live in New Zealand not that long after. In 2008, Vicky began working at UHPS part-time, helping out in the Resource Room and her role has grown and changed since then. During her spare time, Vicky often finds herself watching and cheering on at sports games. She also loves arts and crafts and travel. Later this year they are off to Scandinavia for a wedding and will visit Sweden, Finland and Denmark.

Thank You

We would like to thank the Lahee, Knowles, Qureshi and Shao Families and Paige Prescott who have kindly donated new books to our school library.  It is very important for our young readers to have access to a selection of books to help them learn through reading. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. We accept donations of both new and pre-loved books.  Just drop them off to the office, making sure to include your name.

Guitar Lessons at UHPS

Musiqhub offers guitar tuition to students at UHPS with experienced tutor Phil Moore.

Students learn a range of traditional and contemporary styled songs and techniques during school hours on Tuesdays. The lessons are group classes in which students play and sing together as a group and take turns to play to the group as individuals. This format creates a fun environment for students and is hugely popular in schools around the country.

To find out more about the lessons contact Phil at or 021761441

You can see some of his students in action by clicking the image above.
