This week's welcome

Tēnā koutou katoa,

It was lovely to see so many families lining the Cross Country routes yesterday. I really hope you were able to see your child and for them to hear you cheering. I took a vast number of photos from the start and finish lines and during the holidays I’ll turn them into a video that we can send out as a link (just like Values Assembly). I’m afraid I can’t promise that every child features but I tried my best!

We’re very hopeful that during the holidays Auckland will drop down to Level 1 and we will once again be able to welcome parents and families onsite for afternoon pickup. We’ll keep you up to date via the school app and email.

The holidays are coming just in time as there are lots of very tired children and teachers at the moment. Please take care and enjoy some downtime with your family. If you’re travelling around New Zealand, have a wonderful trip and we look forward to hearing all the children’s stories when we start back next term.

Ngā mihi nui,

Sue Smith

Principal

Do you have any school reading books at home?

We are missing a large number of the little books that children take home to read with parents. Maybe you have some at your home? Please have a look and send them back to us as soon as possible :)

New World Little Garden

Albany New World has nominated our school to be one of their partnered Little Garden Schools.
They donated to UHPS a little kit set to create our own garden and help our students to learn more about growing their own food.
We will hopefully also be receiving extra plants which are being donated by members of the public.

Book donations

We would like to thank Gloria Sun, Ruby Glover and Sophie & Chloe Waite who have kindly donated new books to our school library. It is very important for our young readers to have access to a selection of books to help them learn through reading. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. We accept donations of both new and pre-loved books. Just drop them off to the office, making sure to include your name.

School Events

Chess Power

Playing chess develops self-confidence, concentration and problem-solving skills. We are really pleased to start a Chess Coaching Programme at our school and look forward to bringing the excitement, competition and educational benefits of chess to our children.

Why Chess?

* Improve concentration and focus
* Develop important life skills – fair play and decision making
* Tactical & Strategic thinking
* Prepare for Chess Tournaments against other schools
* Develop a love of chess, of learning and of thinking

What happens in a Chess Power Coaching Programme?

Each session starts with a formal lesson; all players will learn a new strategy, idea or skill each week. Then they put those skills into practice with activities and games. All games are monitored and supervised by the coach who provides individual feedback along the way.

Throughout the programme, we reward kids that do well and encourage and support kids that are struggling. At completion of the programme we recognise each child with a certificate based on their performance.

Hi, my name is Phil Moore. I've been teaching guitar to students at five primary schools on the North Shore since 2012. I teach a range of traditional and contemporary styled songs and techniques at UHPS during the day on Thursdays. The lessons are a lot of fun and ideal for beginners. For an example of the material I teach and to see some of my students in action please look at my YouTube channel.
