This Week’s Welcome

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas!

We are a hive of activity at UHPS. All sorts of end of year celebrations are taking place, or rehearsed for and, in the midst of it all, our swimming lessons continue on a daily basis.

It was lovely to see a number of parents and whanau come along to our Helpers Thank You Breakfast last week. If you were invited but unable to come along, please know how much your assistance during the year was appreciated.

Thank you also to the FOS (Friends of the School) team who will be hosting our discos on Friday and who have also organised so many other events during the year. Thank you for your generosity of time and effort; these events raise funds and fun that make a real difference for our school. Maybe you’d like to join them in 2020? If so, feel free to let me know or watch for adverts early next year.

Next Friday your child will meet their 2020 teacher and classmates. They will spend time getting to know each other and enjoying activities. Your child will bring home an introduction letter from their teacher so that you can learn about them too. An enormous amount of care and thought goes into class placements. Of course, if we were a small country school, the children would have no option other than to be in one or two classes with everyone else. If your child is hesitant, you can help them by modelling resilience and a UHPS ‘Can Do’ attitude.

If your Year 6 child is graduating this year, it may be that your involvement at UHPS is coming to an end. We wish your family a fond farewell and thank you for the privilege of leading your child on their learning journey.

Last but not least, I want to thank and acknowledge all our wonderful UHPS staff. I am, as always, honoured to lead a team of people who go above and beyond on a daily basis in every area of school activity and they definitely deserve to take a bow. Please take advantage of any opportunity you get to give them a smile, wish them well and ensure they leave for their holiday knowing how much they are valued.

2020 Classes

On Friday 20th December we will be sharing with your child who their 2020 teacher will be. It’s quite a process to put together classes and staff have worked really hard to do the best for over 500 students.

If your child is not going to be at school on Friday your child’s current teacher will email you with details of their new teacher and classroom for 2020. You can expect this email sometime after 1:30 pm on the 20th of December.

Board of Trustees

Tena koutou katoa,

The school year is nearly over so before we finish, we wanted to share with you some of the things that the board has been doing since we were appointed by the school community at the end of June.

School donations – Donations are an essential part of school funding and allow the school to provide wonderful educational opportunities for all our children.  After reviewing our school budget, we are happy to announce that there will not be any increase in school donations for 2020.

Weather tightness issues – As many of you may be aware the school has been dealing with some weather tightness issues at the back of the hall and in some of the toilets. After much discussion with the MOE (Ministry of Education) a Project Manager has been appointed and has visited the school. We expect to be advised shortly as to when works will begin but expect it to be fairly soon.

New playground games – Watch out for new playground games which will be appearing on the concrete over the summer. The markings will include a special map of the school’s restorative process that children can follow to help them resolve any conflict in the playground.

Sports equipment – Sport is an important part of school life here at Upper Harbour. Over the next 6 months, we will be undertaking a review of all equipment with a view to renewing and adding to our stocks.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff at Upper Harbour for the dedication and hard work they have shown this year. Together they make our school a very special place for our learners.

Finally, we wish all our UHPS families a wonderful festive season and happy holidays.
