DreamWorker's Link of Love News and Views December 2013
DreamWorker Link of Love newsletter

GW Carver quote

Wishing everyone a SuperFantastic 2014!There is an energy and vitality in young people that is quite infectious. They remind us to stay open and alive and to keep evolving. They give us words like “wotevs” and “LOL” and “selfie.” Even in our DreamWorker Head Office, our youngest member of the team, when asked how he is doing, always responds with his unique one word summary..... “Superfantastic!”
On the other end of the spectrum, there is a beautiful peace, a gentle wisdom in the elderly. They remind us that there is meaning to every stage of life and that one day, we too, shall be in that slower, quieter stage.

So to all our Link of Love sponsors and donors, whether you are young in years, young at heart, or both, our year end wish for you all is......
May you keep playing through life with the vitality of the young and the wisdom of the elderly.

And we wish each of you a SUPERFANTASTIC 2014!

HANOVER PARK – Teaching from her heart

High fives from Janice Phillips' Grade 5sJanice Phillips knows all about heartache. 18 months ago, she lost her daughter, then aged 27. But Janice had lost her daughter to drugs and alcohol many, many years prior. Unemployed and heartsore, she decided to step in and volunteer at her other children’s school as a way to facilitate her own healing. And that is how she became a part of the Link of Love programme at Athwood Primary School.
“I have been given the children from troubled families to take care of. They are my special Grade 5 superstars!” she smiles gently. “My own daughter was deeply troubled. I know that I can make a difference to these young children’s lives. Telling them my story, sharing how I lost my daughter to drugs, sharing how she even took my wedding ring for drug money, these stories touched them deeply. We shed many tears together. And now we are able to share our dreams and our joy too. We have been vulnerable and there is a special kind of connection that happens from that”....

GRASSY PARK – New help for a New Year

Pricipal Lynch and DreamWorker's Tania SisamLotus High School in Grassy Park is delighted to be the newest school to join DreamWorker’s  Link of Love programme. With only 24% of school fees paid as at November 2013, Principal Lynch is very keen to have parents sign up and work at the school as part of the Parents Working for School fees initiative.
He is desperately needing help with security at the school and especially someone to control access via the front gate. “I really want the parents in this area to realise we are a safe school. We have recently had a fence built around the entire property. But our children are always vulnerable to drug peddlers.
Our school has a turmoiled history. We began in the late 70’s as Parkwood High, but the school was consistently vandalised by gangs....

GUGULETHU – Grannies and Grandpas feeling the love

Happy Link of Love workers receive their R100R100 may not mean a lot to someone earning thousands every month. But to our team of Link of Love helpers in Gugulethu it means a LOT. It means they can go out and help the elderly, clean their homes and spend some time chatting to them. And in exchange they can put a little something on their own tables for dinner.
This is how community organisation Yziani Sakhe reports back to DreamWorker, in their “from the heart” way.....

Gugulethu Grannies"We went to Fundiswa Ndzima 's house. She is disabled she got one leg. She lives with her children. Her three children are not working, one is at school. Her children left her alone. She really need a help. She was very happy for her house to be cleaned.
Gerald Dunjane is staying in the flat and living alone. He get an old age grant. When we clean his flat he want us to come again for cleaning the walls and painting....

HOUT BAY – Sentinel Primary – parents working with purpose

Wayne VlotmanIf the children at Sentinel Primary are looking forward to the school holidays, Wayne Vlotman is looking even more forward! Wayne used to be employed full time in the fish factories and on the boats, until the collapse of the fishing industry saw him, like many others, unemployed.

Wayne has come through many personal hardships including addiction, to find a new way for himself in life. Although unemployed, he helps out every day at Cares Rehabilitation Centre in Hout Bay, preparing food in their soup kitchen. He is also a counsellor, sharing his story with others in a similar situation, mentoring, guiding and giving hope.
“I have walked a long journey back from the edge of self destruction...

Rachel Snyders surrounded by her young chickens!Rachel Snyders was born to work with children. She has worked at Best Buddies in Hout Bay as well as her local crèche for several years. So when Sentinel Principal, Amanda Engelbrect was looking for a classroom assistant, Rachel was a natural choice.
Rachel has been taking care of her husband who suffered a stroke earlier this year but is recovering slowly. She is excited about being back at work, doing what she loves best.....teaching young children!
“I can slot in anywhere where they need me if a teacher is absent. Whether I am helping the kids with homework or playing the recorder, I just love it all. I am so grateful to be on the Link of Love programme, helping out here at my kids’ school.”...

Thank you!
