News & Views - Link of Love August 2013 newsletter

Imagine if every person who has work, any work, purchases just one day of work for an unemployed person as a gesture of thanks.
Imagine how many unemployed people could work and put food on their empty tables.
Imagine how many schools could be helped, how many old people could be helped, how many sick people could be helped.
Imagine how many workdays we could facilitate together for Link of Love.

HOUT BAY - Sentinel Primary needs your help!

Sentinel Primary

With the appointment of a DreamWorker fieldworker in Hout Bay, news has spread fast in the village.

Sentinel Primary School in Hangberg is desperate to join our Link of Love programme.
Amanda Engelbrecht called us to ask “We need help in the classrooms. If a teacher is absent, the department will only send a substitute teacher once that teacher is absent for more than 10 days. It is a nightmare trying to control classrooms of between 37 and 44 children! Can you assist us, so we can use unemployed parents from Hangberg to become 'stand in' teachers.”

ATHLONE - Hope for Heatherdale

Heatherdale faces

HEATHERDALE PRIMARY SCHOOL is delighted to be a part of the Link of Love programme.
Co-ordinator, Jacky van der Hyde-Adams is so excited that the school hall is finally being repainted with the help of Melvin Jacobus, who is currently unemployed and grateful to have several days of work again.
“We have so many improvements up our sleeve but we need help. Our next project is to get the bathrooms spring cleaned. We will employ some ladies from our community for that shortly”.

HANOVER PARK – Helping young and old

AthwoodAll the schools in Hanover Park are wonderfully active with Link of Love in full flow!
At present we are supporting Crystal High School, Blomvlei Primary, Athwood Primary, Voorspoed Primary.
ATHWOOD PRIMARY SCHOOL was absolutely delighted with their donation of yellow, printed T shirts from Dragon Sports. Headmaster, Rosdien Desai says “Well you can’t miss the kids from Athwood now at sports events. We shine golden yellow like the sunshine! Thank you to Dragon Sports.”
VOORSPOED PRIMARY SCHOOL is using their funds to pay for Nicholas Williams to guard the school most evenings and weekends. But he is “man alone” and does the job mostly as a volunteer.
Sadly, the School Feeding room was broken into this term, despite a security gate. An extensive amount of canned and dry products was stolen and School Feeding cannot replace these till next month. About 600 – 700 children are fed per day so this is a serious loss!

Fieldworker, Amina Burger and bursar, Fernanda Carelse Blomvlei Primary August 2013BLOMVLEI PRIMARY SCHOOL is so grateful for the help from Link of Love. The school has many parents who don’t have money for school fees and in fact don’t have money for food! Blomvlei is wanting to put together as many food parcels as possible to help these parents.

Ryburg facesRYBURG TERRACE AGED HOME is a hive of activity once a month, as windows are cleaned, carpets beaten and curtains washed. In fact, any job that would be physically demanding for an elderly person. A dedicated team of unemployed ladies moves in, encouraged by field worker, Amina Burger.....and leaves things  sparkling clean. Not to mention all the shared stories, laughs and general communal uplifting that happens between giver and receiver.
For Hannah Booysen and Joy Maggot it was “love at first sight”. Joy always looks forward to her monthly visit to help Hannah with ironing, sweeping and mopping the floors. They are a true link of love!

DELFT – Linking hands at Gateway

Gateway PrimaryGATEWAY PRIMARY SCHOOL (formerly Abedare Primary 2) is also using their Link of Love funds to help with security. Their funding from the Dept of Public Works ceased suddenly. Being a school made up of prefab buildings, means they are really vulnerable to crime. Groups of unemployed parents are volunteering to patrol the school.....and will receive a small financial “thank you.” Please Link your Love and help Gateway remain crime free!

GUGULETHU – Gogos and grandchildren receiving loads of love

TB patient, NomavaYIZANI SAKHE continues to work hand in hand with Link of Love, to spread love and care in Gugulethu. Every month, individual homes are visited and the old folks or people suffering from TB receive a helping hand. Cooking, cleaning, comforting.
On a happier note, LINK OF LOVE also stepped in to help with a special day for the youth, by funding food for the day for the children from Gugulethu. The Department of Social Development hosted a series of “dialogues” for the youth from various areas, discussing issues like gangsterism, bullying, child abuse, loss etc. 205 children and a host of social workers participated in this open hearted programme. Ubuntu is still alive and well in our communities!
