The Buckland Merrifield Gallery announces an important exhibition of new work by painter Paul Mathieson, winner of the Strathbutler Award 2015. His new series, entitled Notes From A Street, offers further explorations on contemporary urban life, carefully crafted canvases, rich in narrative and social commentary.

Mathieson’s paintings, an amalgam of complex composition, masterful use of colour and well-controlled tonal gradations, combined with the various iconic references to popular culture, speak to the realities of contemporary life. His visual vocabulary takes the viewer to places that are darkly humorous, yet the paintings are informed by an underlying sense of humanity.
