Pace Notes: 7 May 2013

As winter looms New Zealand's rally season begins. A mere ten days and our big event for 2013 kicks off with the opening round of the Asia Pacific Rally Championship being contested at the International Rally of Whangarei, in association with the Brian Green Property Group, 18 – 19 May. Although we miss out on hosting a round of the World Rally Championship this year the rally office will continue to operate as they run the six-round Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship and assist with the Possum Bourne Memorial Rally (7 September). In the meantime enjoy some of happenings from around New Zealand and the world.

Whangarei to host only international event for 2013

Next week’s 17 – 19 May International Rally of Whangarei in association with the Brian Green Property Group will be New Zealand’s only international category rally event for 2013. The opening round of the FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship the entry list includes rising Finnish rally pairing Esapekka Lapi and co-driver Janne Ferm who will be competing in New Zealand for the first time.

Possum Bourne – ten years on

This year’s tenth anniversary Possum Bourne Memorial Rally, sponsored by Vantage, is another fitting tribute to the man who took his passion to the world stage. Being held on Saturday 7 September the one day event will use a number of popular Rally New Zealand stages and includes a number of tarmac tests. The day ends with a blat around the newly refurbished Pukekohe Park Raceway – a stone’s throw from Possum’s former workshop facility.

Eighth Rally Argentina victory for Loeb

He may only be doing a handful of events for 2013 but that hasn’t slowed the most successful driver in the World Rally Championship from winning the weekend’s fifth round for the year. Sébastien Loeb and Daniel Elena claimed their 78th top-tier win in their Citroen DS3 WRC by finishing 55 seconds ahead of Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia in the Volkswagen Polo R WRC. Ogier continues to lead the overall standings with a total of 122 points, Loeb second on 68 points and Miko Hirvonen third on 57 points.

World Rally Championship changes brings good news to New Zealand

The appointment of a new promoter group to manage the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) – a series New Zealand has been a part of since 1977, brings good news for those wishing to follow in the tyre tracks of Possum Bourne or Hayden Paddon. Read more…
