Gobble, Gobble

In a 24/7 world, Thanksgiving gives us the chance to press the pause button and reflect. Whether it is the love of family, the support of friends or personal accomplishments, we can all find something to celebrate. Among our clients, one person in particular serves as a compelling reminder of what it means to be truly thankful by living life to the fullest. Six years ago TKA client Bryan Happy Turkey Day from TKA!Andersen became a triple amputee after an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) attack during his second tour of duty. Today, he is a sought-after speaker, actor, and extreme sports enthusiast, who recently added "author" to his long list of accomplishments. This month, his memoir, NO TURNING BACK was released, and we have been overjoyed to see him interviewed by major news outlets like MSNBC and Fox. Inspiring stories like Bryan's are what we'll be remembering as we close out the year – thankful for the many blessings we've received  and looking forward to the new dreams yet to be realized.
In this month's issue, our agents reveal what they are grateful for this year in the Roundtable section, Nephele Tempest offers guidance on getting your writing house in order, and we have a few pictures to share from the recent underwater wedding of TKA clients Marley Gibson, author of the Ghost Huntress series, and Patrick Burns, co-author of THE OTHER SIDE: A TEEN'S GUIDE TO GHOST HUNTING AND THE PARANORMAL. BIG congrats to the happy couple!
And, last, but certainly not least… We are previewing a major contest. In early December, we'll be sending out a special contest mailing, and the prize is an iPad. Yep, an iPad! Might be just the perfect gift…or you can keep it for yourself.

Nephele TempestA New Year in Writing by Nephele Tempest

As hard as I find it to believe, 2011 is swiftly drawing to a close. And while there are still a number of weeks until the new year kicks in, they will be busy with holiday preparations and travel, leaving little free time to plan for 2012. I’m not a huge fan of resolutions—they seem to end up as a list of things I failed to accomplish more often than not—but I do like to come up with a few things to aim for, from work goals to vacation ideas. And for writers, I think it’s wonderful to dream up a few writerly aspirations for the year to come.

Whatever stage you are at in your writing career, it’s always good to assess your progress and come up with a target or two to help keep you moving forward. Newer writers might strive to finally finish a first novel, or to tackle revisions on a project recently completed. More advanced writers might declare this the year they’ll seek out an agent. Those already publishing might experiment with a new genre, a new series idea, or try their hand at a shorter format—novellas or short stories.

The beauty of a career in writing, however, is that there are many other aspects to the job. If you’re happy with your writing process and the progress you’re making, how about looking at new ways to network or to market yourself? Have you been thinking about attending a writers’ conference? Perhaps 2012 is the year to do it. Or if you regularly attend a local conference, or one focused on your genre, perhaps this year you should look into branching out and finding a larger or more generalized conference. You’ll meet new people—different kinds of writers, editors, and so on. The fresh perspective can help generate new ideas for your own work.

Other ideas for the new year:

  • Design a website or revamp your current one. Don’t limit yourself to a standard blog, but look for alternative content. Does your book lend itself to creating some sort of game or puzzle for visitors? How about music playlists for your characters? You can easily link to YouTube or Spotify or one of the other music websites to allow visitors to hear what your characters are listening to during your story.
  • Look into other forms of social media. Pick just one and focus on it, rather than trying to do it all. Actually be “social” and don’t just assume you’re there to sell your books.
  • Take a class, either in person or online. It can be a writing class, or something that will inspire your stories: history, literature, religion, science, criminology, psychology. Find a new career for a protagonist or antagonist while you’re at it.
  • Make an effort to contact and interview several people in your community who have different jobs, backgrounds, or experiences. Contact your local senior center; retirees often have fascinating stories to share that might inspire you, and many have too few opportunities to talk about their lives.

Whatever your writing goals, take an hour or two to think them through and see what you can do in the coming year to help achieve them. There are many aspects of this business over which you have limited control, but with a bit of forethought, there are many areas where you can take charge and thrive. Happy writing!

Agents of the Roundtable

Knights of the RoundtableQUESTION: As we sit at our *virtual* Thanksgiving table today, what would you say that you are most grateful for from this past year?

Deidre Knight: I’m thankful for a year where I learned and tried many new things: baking pie, knitting, making cake from scratch, snorkeling, wave running, parasailing…ran my first Peachtree Road Race (a 10K) and ran ten other 5Ks.  But I wasn’t only embracing new adventures personally; on the professional level, we focused on taking TKA into new arenas and growing with the industry changes. Where some might view change as frightening, I think it’s the pathway to whole new accomplishments.  I love all the potential for success that the digital revolution is bringing, so I’m entering 2012 striving to learn even more about maximizing that arena for TKA as a whole and for our clients.

Pamela Harty: Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to reflect on all we have to be grateful for in our lives. On a business note, I am so thankful for my incredibly talented and creative clients who keep me on my toes. These are interesting times in our industry for publishers, authors and agents and I am truly grateful to be a part of it all.

Lucienne Diver: I’ve always been a geek. It’s very gratifying to see all of my geekdoms (zombies and vampires and shifters, oh my!) going mainstream. It’s like back in high school when the drama club took over the main dance floor…but that’s a story for another day. Seriously, it’s pretty cool that suddenly I and everything I love is trendy. It means good things for my authors, and they deserve all good things!

Melissa Jeglinski: I’m thankful for all the wonderful people I work with: my colleagues who keep me laughing when things get overwhelming; and my clients who keep me entertained with their wonderful projects.

Nepele Tempest: I’m grateful for all the amazing people I get to work with over the course of the year, from my fabulous co-workers here at The Knight Agency, to the editors it’s my privileged to know, to my lovely and talented clients. There can’t be a better job in the world than one that allows you to chat about books all day with so many fun, intelligent, interesting people.

I want you to know this book is not about the war in Iraq, and I'm not pushing a political agenda. Even though I'm going to tell you about the day I was wounded and what I went through during rehab, this book's not just some war memoir or a pity party. I just want to share some of my stories with you. This book is not about being wounded. It's not about struggling.
This book is about living. It's about life.

In this inspiring memoir, Bryan shares his infectious love for life that touches anyone who's faced hardship. No Turning Back is a testament to pure hard work, perseverance, and hope for a better life- no matter what shape it takes. > Purchase Now
