A Message From The President

July 21, 2016                       Volume 4 No. 86

More .ng Domains mean Cheaper .ng Domains

More and more Nigerians are getting on the .ng train, and this is exciting! Many Nigerian businesses now proudly use their .ng domain names as business identities. More registered domains names mean that the per unit cost of registering domain names will be lower, so NIRA can afford to make the domains even more affordable.

The NIRA Executive Board wants all Nigerians to be able to register and use the .name.ng string, even in conjuction with their existing Free or Paid email services.  The Board has specially consented to making .name.ng domain names to be very affordable, at a price not more than N500. Yes - Five Hundred Naira per domain. The prices of all domain strings are now reduced, to get more Nigerians on board.

In the coming days, as more registrars update their platforms, you will notice the price reduction reflecting on the purchase of .ng domain names that you make.  You can also share this good news with friends and associates.  I encourage all to take advantage of the reduced pricing structure, to get your .ng domain names.

ICANN57 PUBLIC MEETING TO BE HOSTED IN HYDERABAD, INDIA.

ICANN57 will be held in Hyderabad, India, from Thursday 3rd November to Wednes-day 9th November, 2016. The event marks the second ICANN Public Meeting to be hosted in India. The first, ICANN31, was held in February 2008 in New Delhi.
Currently, over 462 million people in India are connected to the Internet. This number may seem huge, but it represents only 34% of the country’s population. It is expected that many of the next billion Internet users will come from India! With India’s support of the multistakeholder model of Internet governance, ICANN57 presents an opportunity for ICANN’s global community. It hopes to strengthen ICANN connections with India’s multi-stakeholders.

Hyderabad – nicknamed “Cyberabad” – is home to top international and Indian information technology companies. Hyderabad is the capital of India’s newest state, Telengana, which was established in June 2014. But for history buffs, the city of Hyderabad, situated on the banks of the Musi river, was founded in 1589 by the Qutub Shahi dynasty. Hyderabad’s uniqueness is that the ancient and the modern blend seamlessly. From the late 1990s, Hyderabad started gaining prominence as a center for the information technology industry, and has grown to earn its nickname. Plan to be in Hyderabad, it will be worth it!

TECH SPEAK

.NG AS A TOOL FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT AMONG THE NIGERIAN YOUTH
The development and transformation of Nigeria is highly dependent on youth empowerment through Entrepreneurship. Youths are the backbone of economic development all over the world and they play important roles for employment, income generation and societal changes, particularly in transition economies like Nigeria.

Entrepreneurship is more than simply “starting a business.” It is a process through which individuals identify opportunities, allocate resources, and create value. This creation of value is often through the identification of unmet needs or through the identification of opportunities for change.

The vast opportunities available in the Domain Name System (DNS) industry for entrepreneur cannot be over emphasized, but this has not been sufficiently harnessed in Nigeria and as such, the vast growth and Internet boom has been somewhat sluggish in Nigeria.

Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) has over the years encouraged and developed programs that facilitates the breeding of Entrepreneurs within the DNS industry in Nigeria. Under the .ng platform, several opportunities exists for Nigerian youths. Some of this opportunities includes:
