A Message From The President

October 23, 2014                       Volume 2 No. 41
NIRA in Los Angeles for ICANN 51

ICANN 51 Los Angeles, organized by the Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) took place from 12th to 16th October 2014 in Los Angeles, USA.
Oh, yes! NiRA was present at the “City of Angels”. We needed to be there for many reasons, including to protect our National Resources and contribute to the global discuss on the Transition of US Stewardship of IANA. We believe we did a good job. Nigeria was well represented and recognized in the scheme of things. I also granted interview on the IANA Stewardship Transition Coordination Group (ICG). But, more information on that later.
From Saturday 11th till Friday 17th October 2014, Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, venue for ICANN51 was a beehive of activities, from Generic Names Supporting Organizations (GNSO) Working Sessions, Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) Opening Plenary to GAC Meeting: Transition of US Stewardship of IANA and strengthening ICANN accountability and Governance, GAC Meeting: Two Character Domain Names in the New gTLDs, Deploying the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)’s WHOIS replacement, etc. The conference was packed full of discuss and people. Please click on.
ICANN President Fadi Chehade sent a strong message from the podium in his opening remarks that Management of ICANN and the Community are "on the same page" about the process to develop accountability mechanisms. Fadi Chehade also spoke of the milestone of the US Government undertaking on the transition of the stewardship of IANA. Now is the time to strengthen ICANN to be strong, united and confident post US Government transition.
The interview I granted was about my representation at the ccNSO on the IANA Stewardship Transition Coordination Group (ICG) during the group’s second meeting in Istanbul, 6 September 2014, my take on the announcement that was made by National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) on Intent to Transition Key Internet Domain Name Functions. Clamors that no one country should be in charge of what has become everyday part of our life. See link below for full interview.
Thank you!
Yours Sincerely,
Mrs. Mary Nma Uduma
NIRA President

ICANN To Release 2-Character New gTLD Domains
The Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), at ICANN51  informed all about the introduction of 2-character domains in the new gTLD namespace. ICANN's executives are to develop and implement an efficient procedure for the release of two-character domains, required to be reserved in the New gTLD Registry Agreement.
All two-character ASCII labels shall be withheld from registration or allocated to Registry Operator at the second level within the TLD. Such labels may not be activated in the DNS, and may not be released for registration to any person or entity other than Registry Operator, provided that such two-character label strings may be released to the extent that Registry Operator reaches agreement with the related government and country-code manager of the string as specified in the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 standard. The Registry Operator may also propose the release of these reservations based on its implementation of measures to avoid confusion with the corresponding country codes, subject to approval by ICANN.
