A Message From The President

January 7, 2016                       Volume 4 No. 72

Happy New Year!

We had great hopes for 2016 and it is finally here! Happy New Year to you all!  The year 2015 was an eventful one, with an increase in the number of NiRA Accredited Registrars, which now stands at 53. NIRA now sees a minimum of 1,500 new domains being registered and at least 1,000 domains being renewed month-on-month.  The number of new domains registered in 2015 stood at 22,113. The year 2016 has started on a very good note and we expect a significant growth in the DNS industry this year, which will give us better numbers than what we got in 2015.

We will conduct more trainings on DNS related topics, as well as entrepreneurship trainings that would boost awareness of .ng and the DNS industry especially amongst our youths.  All our activities are geared towards promoting local content in the ICT Sector. We are hopeful that more Nigerians would be online for the right reasons, especially with the Government’s plan to increase broadband penetration. This will definitely help to grow the Nigerian economy.

It could be a bit discouraging as a startup when you discover that your preferred domain name has been registered and taken by someone else.
It could be difficult to find good alternatives for your preferred names. Do not put off your projects or abandon your plans for this reason. Come up with fresh ideas of a name to use. With the introduction of over a thousand new gTLDs and many more interesting ccTLDs with large chunk availability of alternative domain names, this is the era of unlimited possibilities in the domain industry.

Domain report from January to December 2015
The graph and table below indicates the domain name registrations and renewals from January to December 2015. The total domain registrations for the year ending 2015 were 22,113 (Twenty-two Thousand One Hundred and Thirteen). The renewal was 14,462 (Fourteen Thousand, Four Hundred and Sixty Two) domain names. The figures for 2014 were 18,870 and 11,319 respectively. We also witnessed an increase in the number of NiRA Accredited Registrars with an increase of five. NiRA can now boast of having 53 Accredited Registrars. We are hopeful the numbers would increase in 2016 with the additional accreditation of local and foreign Registrars. It has been proved that with more Registrars across the country, Nigerian presence online would increase.
