A Message From The President

November 8, 2018                       Volume 6 No. 146
NiRA AT ngNOG 2018

I was privileged to present the Welcome Address at the 2018 Nigerian Network Operators’ Group (ngNOG) conference held on Tuesday 30th October 2018 at the Zone Tech Park in Lagos. ngNOG as the group is fondly called, is the foremost group of Network Engineers that came together for the purpose of developing capacity in the ICT industry in Nigeria.
This year with the 13th edition, the group aimed at helping the country in its continuous quest/effort to increase broadband penetration, capacity building activity of ICT personnel and other stakeholders in Nigerian Educational Institutions.

At the Conference, I recalled how the ngNOG started in Nigeria in 2006. It was a child of necessity, born out of observing that the majority of participants at the AFNOG in South Africa in the year 2000 were Nigerians. At the conference, we went down memory lane, highlighting how the domestication of ngNOG has saved resources for Nigeria and Nigerians (huge amount of foreign reserves for flight and hotel fees and man hours lost during flight times). Hosting ngNOG in Nigeria, providing quality education to Nigerians in different locations in Nigeria has also contributed to growing the hospitality business in Nigeria.

For those not familiar with terminologies in a particular field or industry, it can be a bit disheartening when these terminologies are used by the experts, who assume their audiences understand. We try to carry our readers along by communicating in the simplest of terms as we want all to understand the workings of the Domain Name System (DNS) Industry. We enlighten and educate our readers by using basic terms. It provides some level of comfort to our readers to know the different technical components and how they work.

So in this article, we will discuss the differences in the terms: domain name, hosting service and website.

What Is a Website?
A website is a collection of related web pages on the Internet that live on a certain domain name. For example the collection of related web pages on nira.org.ng is a website.

The 2018 ngNOG Conference and Workshop held in Lagos from 29th October to 3rd November 2018. The ngNOG forum as conceived is for developing local technical capacity in the management of Internet-connected networks in Nigeria. While the events have extended beyond the Research and Education space to include more commercial network operators and innovators that depend on reliable networks, the goal remains reliable broadband Internet access and services for end users.
