‘Meeting Stakeholders Expectations’

The Executive Board of Directors (EBOD) of your dear Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) had a three-day retreat and came out with positions that will fast-track the organization in a very profound way, especially in achieving its promised aims and objectives on the theme: ‘Meeting Stakeholders Expectation.’

Some of the highlights from the retreat which held between February 6 and 8 2014, were the presentations of what the various Committees’ proposals to achieving this theme.

The presentations cut across the Establishment and Finance, Accreditation, Domain Policy, Communication & Publicity, Technical and Audit Committees respectively.

Earlier, I had given an overview of the 2013 and looking forward into this year, 2014. However, my interest is to showcase and share with our stakeholders the projection of the EBOD.

Noteworthy is that currently as presented by the Establishment Committee, NIRA has some staff strength of Acting Chief Operating Officer (Ag.COO), two technical, while  administration and finance function is outsourced.

In the current dispensation, recruitment exercise is ongoing for the appointment of a substantive COO/Secretary to the Board; Head, Business Development; Head, Technical Services; Head, Corporate Services and Head, Finance & Administration, who are to assist the incoming COO in restructuring our organization.

It is my hope and expectation that the ‘NiRA House’ on Funsho Williams Road, Lagos,  will be the venue for 2014 AGM.

The EBOD resolved to focus on consistent, clear and transparent policies; dispute resolution, security and stability of the Registry, capacity building for staff , Registrars and the Media partners, including continuous publicity, communications, partnership and collaboration with our stakeholders.

Please relax and enjoy this edition and let us have your feedback to serve you better.

Yours Sincerely,
Mrs. Mary Nma Uduma
NIRA President

Also, the event would be audiocast; live and archived for stakeholders unable to attend in person, with spotlight on emerging next steps for standards developers. Chief, Media Relations and Public Information at ITU, Ms Sarah Parkes affirmed that the event aims to facilitate the global expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) through a better understanding of trends, including standardization needs. “Results will inform the drafting of the future technical standards (ITU-T Recommendations) that will be fundamental to the smooth operation of networks potentially supporting billions of interconnected devices,” she said. In addition to examining the status of IoT and machine-to-machine communication (M2M) standardization initiatives across other Standards Developing Organizations (SDOs), ITU says, the event will report on progress of related standards and protocol development in the research and open-source communities.
Chehade warns against internet fragmentation

Chief Executive Officer of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), Mr. Fade Chehade has cautioned activists in the domain name industry who may be agitating for a fragmented Internet.
Speaking at the just concluded World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, he said that the essence of the Internet is that its oneness and openness remain intact.
He warned that once the development of the Internet crumbles to that level, it could amount to re-inventing the wheel, because the processes would need another kind of path to be followed, which defeats the purpose of the founding fathers of the current Internet.
"If we cannot find a way to govern the Internet in an equal footing, in an open transparent way this year, we might descend into a fragmented version of the Internet," Chehadé declared, stressing that the moment the Internet is fragment it is possible there will be tariffs between borders, there will be rules which will not be the internet as it’s known. Readmore.
