FGN PROPOSES 5% ONLINE PURCHASE TAX
As part of the plans to raise more revenue to fund a record budget, the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) is considering a 5% Value Added Tax (VAT) specifically for online purchases.
Mr. Babatunde Fowler, Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service
(FIRS) has been quoted to say that the Government may appoint banks as agents to deduct 5% VAT on all local online purchases. The deductions will cover all purchases processed with a bank card. The policy for VAT on online purchases are yet to be concluded, but Mr. Fowler disclosed that this could be in place by early 2020.
GLOCALISATION AND BRANDING SUMMIT, LAGOS 2019.
Brands and Communications experts gathered at the second edition of the Glocalisation and branding summit, held on the 9th of August, 2019 at the Edmark D'Podium Events Center, Ikeja in Lagos. The theme of this year’s edition was “Positioning Nigerian Businesses for Local and International Markets”. The event was part of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives of Vivacity PR and brought together global and local brands to explore areas of synergy, discuss financial options, impacts of technology and social media on branding and techniques that would make brands stand out and generate required revenue.
DIGITAL ENTREPRENEURS AND SME CONFERENCE NETWORK
Several small business enterprises and startups across various sectors of the economy on Friday, 16th August 2019, converged at NG-HUB by Facebook Lagos, to participate at the Digital Entrepreneurs and SME Conference. The Conference, an initiative of Insightlite International Company aimed at enlightening entrepreneurs and small business owners on how to balance the traditional model of business processes into digital processes.
ICANN 2019 NOMINATING COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES LEADERSHIP SELECTIONS
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) 2019 Nominating Committee (NomCom) announced the selections for ten leadership positions on 19th
August 2019. Those selected will begin their terms after the ICANN66 Annual General Meeting 2-7 November 2019 in Montréal, Canada.
The 2019 Nominating Committee received 127 applications from 42 women and 85 men during its nomination period from 17 January 2019 to 22 March 2019.
The regional breakdown of this year's applicants was:
- 56 from Africa
- 35 from Asia, Australia, Pacific Islands
- 13 from Europe
- 21 from Latin America, Caribbean Islands
- 2 from North America
2019 SOCIAL INFLUENCERS’ SUMMIT
The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) organized a two-day Summit for Social Influencers on 30th and 31st
July 2019 at Mambaya house, Kano state. The Summit attended by special dignitaries, social media influencers and over three hundred participants aimed t0 create a symposium of ideas, innovations and forum where modern advocacy tools and strategies were showcased.
A Message from The President
On behalf of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), I heartily congratulate Mr. Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi the newly appointed Director-General/CEO of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA). Mr. Abdullahi is not new to the Agency as he served as Technical Assistant to Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, the former Director-General/CEO NITDA during his secondment from Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). At NITDA, Mr. Abdullahi coordinated major projects such as the Local Content initiatives that has increased ICT local production by over 200% in 2017 and the execution of strategies which have increased ICT’s contribution to Nigeria’s GDP by over 13% in Q2 2018. With the DG’s vision to transform NITDA into a smart organisation, permit me to extend my best wishes to him and wish him a successful tenor.
