A Message From The President

January 5, 2017                       Volume 5 No. 98

Happy New Year – 2017 is Here!

A new year comes with lots of hopes, aspirations, goals and target setting by all. It might be about new businesses, or expansion plans, propelling everyone to eagerly commence the activities for the year and tap into all the opportunities the New Year always brings.
There are many technology predictions (locally and globally) for 2017, with the prediction on the growth in domain name registrations very prominent.
In 2016, we positioned NiRA to be a significant part of the industrial and economic growth of Nigeria in subsequent years. NIRA was very prominent in the Nigerian Technological space and we intend to continue on this path this year, so we can remain relevant not only as far as the Technology Industry is concerned, but also in the larger Socio-economic space.

Innovators are working overtime to make our life simpler and each year brings us something new. Whether an innovative idea involves launching a new website, writing a blog, developing a web service or establishing a startup company, the domain name is a critical factor which determine the success or failure of the venture online.
The right domain name for a business or organization should reflect the brand, and will become the brand. It should be easy to remember, recognizable, intuitive, pronounceable, short, easy to type, concise, avoid trademarks conflicts etc.
Your domain name is a proud representation of you and your brand. When people think of your website, they will think of it by name. Remember, your domain name provides an opportunity to create/make that first impression about your business, and of course it affects the Search engine optimization (SEO) ranking.
We present you Ten (10) interesting and innovative domain names that have been registered on the .ng domain name platform.
Domain Names Registration Statistics for October, November and December 2016

Overall, registrations has maintained a steady increase, on a year on year basis. The increase in domain name registration is more noticeable when viewed across the different years. The domain names registered and renewed in December 2016 (4,381) is more than the registrations in December 2015 (2,846) and almost doubled the registration in November 2014 (2,325).

ICANN59 Fellowship Application Round Now Open

ICANN has launched the application round for ICANN59. This round is open only for Fellowship Program Alumni, those who have previously completed an ICANN Fellowship. The meeting takes place from 26th to 29th June 2017 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Fellowship Program
The ICANN Fellowship Program seeks out those who are interested in, or already engaged in, the various components of ICANN's work in policy building, the operation of the Domain Name System and the security and stability of the global Internet. The goal of the Program is to help create a broader base of knowledgeable constituents to engage in the ICANN multistakeholder process and become the new voice of experience in their regions and on the global stage.
Since its creation in 2007, the Fellowship Program has built a strong group of individuals who are actively participating in all of the ICANN communities as well as various Internet governance entities within the Internet ecosystem. Their engagement ranges from writing articles and blogs, providing online or in-person public comment in regard to bottom up policy building, engaging in Internet conferences and panel discussions, lifting a pen in working groups, mentoring newcomers, assisting our regional leaders and becoming leaders themselves.
