Equinet Bodies and the new Freedom of Movement Directive

The French Defender of Rights hosted the Conference "Equality bodies and the new freedom of movement directive – challenge or opportunity?" in Paris on 8 December last. This conference was dedicated to the role of equality bodies in combating nationality-based discrimination in the framework of the implementation of the new Directive. Read more:

The Sanctions Regime in Discrimination Cases and its Effects

This study, carried out by Katrin Wladasch of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institut of Human Rights, aims to identify different types of sanctions as a tool for fostering the implementation of the principles of equal treatment and non-discrimination. A specific focus is given to the (potential) role of equality bodies in strengthening effectiveness, proportionality and dissuasiveness of sanctions’ regimes.

Gender/Religion or Belief: In its judgment in the case of Ebrahimian v. France (application no. 64846/11) regarding the non-renewal of a French social worker’s contract, who refused to remove her veil, the European Court of Human Rights held, unanimously, that there had been no violation of Article 9 (right to freedom of religion) of the European Convention on Human Rights. Read more...

Age/Multiple Discrimination: A study published by the European Youth Forum, entitled Multiple discrimination and young people in Europe, concludes that young people face discrimination because of their age, but when other factors such as gender, sexual orientation, physical appearance and religion combine with age this exacerbates the discrimination that they face. Read more...
