Equinet Bodies and the new Freedom of Movement Directive

The French Defender of Rights hosted the Conference "Equality bodies and the new freedom of movement directive – challenge or opportunity?" in Paris on 8 December last. This conference was dedicated to the role of equality bodies in combating nationality-based discrimination in the framework of the implementation of the new Directive. Read more:

The Sanctions Regime in Discrimination Cases and its Effects

This study, carried out by Katrin Wladasch of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institut of Human Rights, aims to identify different types of sanctions as a tool for fostering the implementation of the principles of equal treatment and non-discrimination. A specific focus is given to the (potential) role of equality bodies in strengthening effectiveness, proportionality and dissuasiveness of sanctions’ regimes.  

Equality bodies and Equinet: Promoting Equality in Europe

What are equality bodies? Why do we need equality bodies? What challenges do equality bodies face? How does Equinet support their work?
This tool aims to raise awareness about the role of and challenges faced by equality bodies at national and EU level, but also, on the grounds they cover and the way they can cooperate and bring added value to the work of stakeholders in their daily work.

Disability: The EC has released a proposal for the European Accessibility Act to define common accessibility requirements for certain products and services. 
Sexual Orientation: A list of actions to advance LGBTI equality in the EU has been released as a follow-up to the European Parliament's demand for an EU Roadmap against homophobia adopted in February 2014. Read more...

European Court of Human Rights

Gender/Religion or Belief: In its judgment in the case of Ebrahimian v. France (application no. 64846/11) regarding the non-renewal of a French social worker’s contract, who refused to remove her veil, the European Court of Human Rights held, unanimously, that there had been no violation of Article 9 (right to freedom of religion) of the European Convention on Human Rights. Read more...

Age: The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on measures to promote the rights and dignity of older persons, which encourages Member States to take action to ensure that the rights of older persons are respected and the exchange of good practices. Read more...

Age/Multiple Discrimination: A study published by the European Youth Forum, entitled Multiple discrimination and young people in Europe, concludes that young people face discrimination because of their age, but when other factors such as gender, sexual orientation, physical appearance and religion combine with age this exacerbates the discrimination that they face. Read more...

National Trans Youth Network, UK

Age/Gender Identity: Young people meeting at the Trans Youth Conference in Birmingham in November have developed a Trans Charter for Education, for schools and other educational organisations to use. Read more...
