Music Education

is the life for me!

Welcome to the April 2018 edition of the Yorkshire Youth & Music bulletin.

We've been consumed by sea fever and turned decidedly nautical this month! You can sit on the dock of the bay if you like, folks, but we'd much prefer you to join us over and under the sea for some pearls of wisdom for mid-Spring.

You don't have to be Popeye to appreciate this month's offerings, which we're sure will have you doing the hornpipe with us:

Don't just sail on sailor or get tempted away by the song of the siren! Send your news to us via a message in a bottle if you have to... (but you might want to try facebook, twitter or news@yym.org.uk first).

All the best,

Rebeka

and Arts Award
UPDATE!

Yorkshire Youth & Music has been working in Secure Children’s Homes for a few years now, and we are doing Arts Awards with young people who are resident there.

In addition to our on-going music workshops, Bronze Arts Award involves visiting an arts event (which the young people invited into the secure home instead), research into an artist, and a skill-sharing session. As of this month, the young people are well on their way to gaining their first award!

The Singing & Signing Space
In honour of our continuing work with Deaf and Hearing Impaired (DHI) children, we are sharing our resources with you for FREE, one per month for the next 12 months, in our Singing & Signing Space.

This month, our very own director, Gail Dudson, has produced a detailed guide on Singing and Signing, based on the findings from our Great Singing, Great Signing project and from the Singing and Signing Summit we held in January.

The guide draws on the expertise of musicians involved in the GS,GS project, with valuable contributions from facilitators from around the country who work with Deaf, Hearing Impaired or Learning Disabled people.

Yorkshire Youth and Music training
YY&M's training takes place in direct connection with the needs of our projects

If you would like to access training in music education with children in challenging circumstances, we might be able to help.

Please take a look at our current projects for the types of work we're doing and the young people we're working with now. And feel free to contact us if you want to get involved!

AND FINALLY...

Meet Wikie, the world's first talking killer whale

before we leave you with these words by Spike Milligan:

I must go down to the sea again,
    to the lonely sea and the sky;
I left my shoes and socks there -
    I wonder if they're dry?

As much as we'd love to quit the 9 to 5 to travel the world with a piano,
it's back to the YY&M office for us, folks!
