Tourism Development Initiatives

New promotional films for EP!

Regional Development Australia Whyalla and Eyre Peninsula (RDAWEP) in conjunction with the SA Tourism Commission and five local councils have developed a series of promotional films that showcase the best of our local communities and region.


The project saw the councils of Whyalla, Port Lincoln, Cleve, Elliston and Lower Eyre Peninsula take up the opportunity and produce individual films that can be utilised to promote our council areas to potential visitors, attract investment and act as a reminder to locals about what is so special about our region.  Other councils have already voiced their interest in producing similar films this year.

RDAWEP identified a lack of digital promotional material as a key inhibitor to promoting and marketing the region and with funding support from the South Australian Tourism Commission and councils, sought to produce a series of films that captured the essence of each council area.
"The Eyre Peninsula is a diverse region whether it be in the size of the communities, the landscapes or the produce that we harvest.  Communicating this complex offering can be a challenge." said Brad Riddle, Tourism and Economic Development Manager, RDAWEP.

The films have been produced by Mark Tipple Photography primarily for social media and will ensure that councils, communities and the region keep up with the changing marketing landscape.

The films will be released and promoted via a targeted social media campaign which will roll out over the next 4 weeks.  The campaign, which is customised to each council area, will be concentrating on a mix of target markets from Grey Nomads to Young Adventurers and will aim to leverage the larger audiences of the SA Tourism Commission and Tourism Australia.

Regional Visitor Guide Partner Announced

Regional Development Australia Whyalla and Eyre Peninsula are pleased to announce HWR Media & Communications (HWR) as our new tourism print marketing and communications partner after a comprehensive tender process.

HWR will commence work on the 2017 Eyre Peninsula Regional Visitor Guide and the 2017 Nullarbor Map immediately.
"We are pleased to welcome HWR to our marketing and communications services.  We have ambitious goals associated with building our brand and reputation as a quality tourism destination", said CEO of RDAWEP, Dion Dorward.
In a boost for Eyre Peninsula businesses, 2017 marks the first year that responsibility for visitor guides returns to the regions and whilst a number of other regions will not be continuing regional visitor guides the overwhelming response from our region and consumers was that the guide should be continued.
"We have listened and will continue the guide, there will be some significant changes including some redesign that will allow us to put our own style to it and create the content that is beneficial for the region.  The integration with new and existing digital platforms will also be a key component in 2017.  We will be working with Councils and industry to ensure we capture what's required to tell our story in a contemporary and compelling manner," said Brad Riddle, Tourism and Economic Development Manager, RDAWEP.
The Eyre Peninsula Regional Visitor Guide and the Nullarbor Map will have strong digital and social media components utilising the latest platforms to ensure we can create real return on investment for the industry.

In response to their appointment, HWR Media & Communications said they are delighted to once again be working closely with one of SA's most iconic regions.
"We look forward to working with the team and using our new creative freedom to help meet the challenges of a rapidly changing communications landscape," said CEO, Tom Raggatt.
HWR will begin communicating with local businesses in late August about new opportunities associated with the print and digital versions of the Regional Visitor Guide and the Nullarbor Map.

"So when you receive communications from HWR, I ask you treat them as an extension of our team at RDAWEP.  They are here to assist us to grow regional tourism and provide real benefit back to your businesses and communities,"  said Mr Riddle.

RDAWEP's comprehensive tender process involved a two stage approach and followed a diligent assessment process.  The successful agencies were awarded on merit.  RDAWEP would like to acknowledge our outgoing print marketing partners Woof Media and Momentum and thank them for their contribution  to RDAWEP.

Understanding China Workshops

The South Australian Tourism Commission in conjunction with RDAWEP would like to invite you to a complimentary workshop run by Richard Beere.

Richard Beere has spent over 30 years working and living in Asia in senior management positions and is now the Managing Director of Fastrak Solutions.  Richard was part of the teams that succeeded in making Australia the first western destination to gain Approved Destination Status in China and that secured China Southern Airlines to initially fly to Australia.  He was also instrumental in the development of Tourism Australia's original China Development Plan - most of which is still in use today.  The South Australian Tourism Commission has engaged Richard to produce a development plan for South Australia and the Chinese market.


You are invited to attend the workshop at the Port Lincoln Hotel on Tuesday 20 September.

The workshop is aimed at businesses and organisations that engage or would like to engage with Chinese visitors and will assist you in better understanding the realities and requirements of this market.

Regional Development Australia Whyalla and Eyre Peninsula Inc (RDAWEP) is seeking feedback from Whyalla residents who are currently living with a disability, their family members or workers in the disability sector, to be involved in a discussion/review to establish the current and demand for disability supported accommodation respite and other services in Whyalla.
RDAWEP is seeking participants to complete an online survey or be interviewed about this subject.  Interviews will conducted over a period of 5 weeks, commencing 29 August 2016.

Certificate Courses on offer at TAFE SA

Certificate II in Engineering

Delivered at the Whyalla Campus.  Starting Semester 2, up to 10 weeks full-time.
Fees $160-$195.  Indicative price only.  This course is funded through the Government of South Australia's WorkReady initiative.  Eligibility criteria apply, incidental fees may apply.
Hands on learning includes:
  • MIG/ARC/TIG Welding
  • Mechanical cutting including oxy/carbon arc and plasma cutting
  • Brazing and soldering 
  • Using hand and power tools
  • Fabrication skills.

2016 Ceduna Oysterfest

The 2016 Ceduna Oysterfest is set to be another spectacular showcase of Far West Coast hospitality, with a varied entertainment program, activities, competitions and more!

This year the focus will be on expanding the variety of the freshest and best in local seafood to complement their signature Far West Coast Oysters, sourced from selected growers in Smoky and Denial Bays.

Whyalla Business Breakfast Forum

Department of Employment are conducting a Business Breakfast Forum on 29 September 2016 at the Westland Hotel Conference facility on McDouall Stuart Ave, Whyalla.

This event is supported by Whyalla City Council, Whyalla Chamber of Commerce and Regional Development Australia Whyalla and Eyre Peninsula Inc.
Guest speakers at the Forum include Mr Steve Arndt from BHP Billiton and Mr Brett Triffett from Oz Minerals.  Both speakers will give a short presentation of their respective companies' future plans in the region.
Also in attendance will be Mr Ivan Neville, Manager of the Labour Market Research and Analysis Branch of the Department of Employment.  Mr Neville will provide a statistical analysis of the region including the future of work and the labour force requirements.
The Department of Employment will provide practical information on how to:
  • find and recruit job ready individuals
  • access Government funding to support your business and training needs
  • build your workforce capability.
There will also be opportunities to network with other employers and to share information about your current workforce challenges and opportunities.
The forum will also be an avenue for local business to provide feedback and ideas to the Department of Employment.

This event is FREE with a cooked or continental breakfast provided.

Grants SA Information Session - Whyalla

The Department for communities and Social Inclusion is making it easier for community organisations to apply for one-off grants by bringing its grant programs together through one easy application.

Grants SA brings together approximately $3 million of one-off funding from:
  • Community and Social Welfare Fund (CBSA) grants
  • Multicultural SA Grants (Celebrating Diversity one-off grants)
  • Volunteer Training Grants and Volunteer Support Fund
Communities will also benefit greatly from simpler guidelines and reporting processes.
Eligible communities can apply for this funding to deliver programs, services and/or events that contribute to:
  • local community needs
  • strong and inclusive communities
  • wellbeing and participation
  • skills and knowledge
  • cultural diversity
  • volunteering 
  • disadvantaged young people, adults and families.
Grants SA supports the South Australian Government's commitment to promoting efficiencies and building partnerships with the community to reduce red tape.

An information session about Grants SA will be held at Regional Development Australia Whyalla and Eyre Peninsula Inc, 127 Nicolson Avenue, Whyalla Norrie.

Award Opportunities

RIRDC Rural Women's Award now open

Applications are now open for the 2017 Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) Rural Women's Award.

The RIRDC Rural Women's Award identifies and supports emerging women leaders who have the desire, commitment and leadership potential to make a greater contribution to primary industries and rural communities.
Each state and territory winner is awarded a $10,000 financial bursary to implement a project or initiative that will benefit primary industries and rural Australia.  They also have the opportunity to participate in leadership development opportunities and receive support to develop an individual integrated leadership plan.
South Australia's state winner will represent SA against the other state and territory winners in the national award later in 2017.

Nominations close 31 October 2016.

2017 Science and Innovation Awards

Grants to realise big ideas from young rural innovators.

Grant applications are now open for the 2017 Science and Innovation Awards for Young People in Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
If you're 18-35, this is your chance to apply for up to $22,000 to fund your innovative research project that will benefit Australia's primary industries.

Perks Business Boost Awards

Two South Australian businesses will have the opportunity to access $35,000 worth of vital business services as part of a brand new initiative launched ly leading Adelaide accounting and financial services firm Perks.

The Perks Business Boost Awards is open to assist start-ups and established businesses across all sectors and industries.
Perks, together with award sponsor Michels Warren, will provide each winner with $15,000 worth of professional services tailored to their specific business needs - from budgeting, forecasting and finance to human resource management, business or start-up advisory, public relations, graphic design and more.  In addition, the start-up prize will include a $5,000 cash element for business owners to use in any way to bring their idea to life.
Entries must be submitted no later than 17 October, 2016

Small Grants for Rural Communities (SGRC) - Round 30

Grants of up to $5,000 are available for projects and activities that offer clear public benefit for communities in rural, regional or remote Australia.


Priority is given to communities of 10,000 or fewer.

Applications for Round 30 are now open and close 7 October 2016.

Bridge to MassChallenge start-up accelerator program

The South Australian Government is a founding partner of the Bridge to MassChallenge program.

MassChallenge is a start-up accelerator program that operates as a competition with more than US$2 million in cash prizes.  Participants in the FREE program have access to expert mentors, global networks, funding opportunities as well as marketing and other resources.  
MassChallenge will select 15 start-ups to participate in the three-day boot camp in Adelaide from 2-4 November.  Around five from that group will have the opportunity to enter the national competition and winners from that event will participate in a five-day boot camp in Boston, USA in February 2017.

Performers' Trust Foundation

The Phonographic Performance Company of Australia (PPCA) provides grants to promote and encourage music and the music-related performing arts.

Grants of up to $5,000 can be provided for the following purposes:
  • Performance at concerts at or for charitable institutions such as hospitals or homes for the aged
  • Scholarships for the promotion and encouragement of musical and theatrical education
  • The promotion and encouragement of the performing arts to the general public
  • The aid or assistance of any beneficiary who is unable to adequately maintain herself/himself by her/his own exertions and other income.

Round 4: Animals & Community 

Grants to support eligible nominated Australian-based charities, community groups or not-for-profit organisations.
This round is for injured, endangered, abused or sick animals and causes that help specific community groups like women or refugees.
Wildlife shelters, animal refuges and animal rescue organisations are ideal for this round.  So are safe houses for abuse victims, causes that help resettle refugees and environmental groups, to name a few.

  • Office of the Industry Advocate:  The Industry Participation Advocate leads a dedicated team who investigate and report on new ways to drive local investment, develop strong value chains from the State's portfolio of major projects, support the development of an advanced services sector and leverage opportunities for innovation.
