Economic Development Initiatives

RDA's Shanghai Mission

RDA Whyalla and Eyre Peninsula in a combined initiative with RDA Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island and RDA Limestone Coast attended a trade and investment mission in Shanghai, China in April.

The three RDA's worked in partnership with the Shanghai Small and Medium Enterprise Center for International Cooperation (SMEC), who are a business based organisation with a membership in excess of 300,000.
The initiative provided RDAWEP an opportunity to build on the partnerships we have formed with SMEC and discuss further the opportunities across a number of sectors including food, food service, tourism, education and aged care with its membership.
"RDAWEP recognise the importance of the Chinese economy to future opportunities in the region and want to ensure that our organisation takes a targeted, proactive approach that will deliver the greatest benefit for the Eyre Peninsula" said Dion Dorward, CEO, RDAWEP.

CEO of RDAWEP, Dion Dorward presents a gift from our region to Zhao Dan, Deputy Division Chief, Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy.

The mission enabled RDAWEP to gain a critical understanding of the business environment in Shanghai and China and an opportunity to meet with an develop ongoing relationships with individual Chinese businesses interested in trade, investment and tourism opportunities in our region.
The initiative has already had a number of successes with a variety of business and media representatives travelling to Eyre Peninsula from Shanghai over the coming months to look in more detail at opportunities to partner with the region.

Port Bonython Fuel Terminal Project

Project Information Update #6 - Construction update, 1 April 2016
Whyalla's latest major development.

Port Bonython Fuels isvery pleased that the Project is at last nearing completion with terminal commissioning activities planned for April.  
The first ship carrying commissioning diesel was scheduled to arrive at Port Bonython around 7th April, followed by careful commissioning process to bring the terminal into operational status.  It is expected the commissioning will take about 4-6 weeks to complete.
After successful commissioning, Port Bonython Fuels looks forward to supporting the Whyalla region and South Australia with the supply of high quality diesel.

Food Industry Development Initiative

An Evening with Adam Liston

In April, Melbourne chefs Adam Liston and Joel Baylon visited Whyalla for an exclusive dinner at The Water's Edge Restaurant, Whyalla.

Liston and Baylon (ex Northern Light Yakitori Bay, Collingwood) worked with local chefs Bev Vandeleur and Katie Donaldson to create a five course menu using local produce and fusing it into a stunning Japanese menu.
In a time where Whyalla needs all the help they can get, it was a stunning response from the local community who packed the venue with many turned away.  Thankyou for the wonderful seafood provided by Mori Seafood (tuna) and SEKOL (prawns and squid).
Mark Allsopp from Regional Development Australia Whyalla and Eyre Peninsula was instrumental in bringing the dinner to Whyalla.  Following the challenges of Arrium, which has seriously hurt the city, support is needed for other industries such as tourism and hospitality.

"Apart from being a phenomenal experience, it's also a shot in the arm that can help us to be taken seriously as a food destination on the Eyre Peninsula" says Water's Edge owner, Ben Vandeleur.
"We are committed to the region and are digging deep to continue to provide innovative and unique experiences for our guests."


The Water's Edge has two more key events in May including a Brewing Masterclass with Dan Wright from Swell Brewing on 13th May and a five course degustation with Corrina Wright from Oliver's Taranga on 15th May.


Adam Liston is opening his new venue 'Honcho' which will be a 60 seat two story Japanese/Chinese/Korean restaurant in collaboration with the Halim Group.  Liston and his right hand Joel Baylon, will take up sticks with a winter noodle bar between June and August before Honcho is unveiled.

Tourism Development Initiatives

Whyalla's Northern Coastline Master Plan

City of Whyalla together with RDA Whyalla and Eyre Peninsula have initiated work on a Master Plan for the Northern Coastline.

This area generally extends from Point Lowly in the south to Point Douglas in the north.
The purpose of the Northern Coastline Master Plan project is to determine the area's potential for further recreational and tourism development, in order to create a high quality destination for residents of Whyalla and visitors to the region.  This may ultimately include plans for the improvement of existing facilities and the establishment of a range of new facilities and activities which can take advantage of the unique scenic coastline of the Upper Spencer Gulf.
Council and RDAWEP has appointed Fyfe Pty Ltd to prepare the Master Plan, which will involve consultation with key stakeholders, including the wider Whyalla community.
The first stage of the project includes consideration of a range of factors including market research and consultation in order to understand the Whyalla context and key issues and opportunities that exist.


As part of this, two surveys have been designed, one for residents of Whyalla, the other for visitors:

Certificate Courses on offer at TAFE SA

TAFE SA is happy to announce they will be offering the Certificate II in Hospitality back at the Port Lincoln Campus.

Starting 5th May 2016 every Thursday and Friday from 9:00am to 3:00pm (Course is expected to be completed by 22nd July 2016)
Fees - $167.50  *this course is funded through the Government of South Australia's WorkReady initiative.  Eligibility criteria apply, incidental fees may apply*
This training will include units:
  • Prepare and serve espresso coffee
  • Provide responsible service of alcohol

Transition to Work

Workskil has been successful in gaining the Transition to Work contract in Whyalla, Port Augusta and Port Lincoln.

Transition to Work (TtW) is a service that supports young people aged 15-21 transition into employment.  It is a 12 month youth based program designed to help young people:
  • Develop practical skills to get a job
  • Connect with education and training
  • Find and complete work experience placements
  • Find job opportunities in the local area
  • Connect with relevant local community services.

ABARES Regional Outlook Conference Port Lincoln

The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) conference is an essential part of the delivery of commodity forecasts and research results directly to regional communities.

At each Regional Outlook conference, senior ABARES economists present the economic overview and forecasts for key agricultural commodities and farm financial performance.  A range of regionally based speakers and producers cover topics such as industry opportunities and challenges, natural resource management, labour and water issues, and case studies from regional business people who are taking innovative approaches.

Crime Prevention and Community Safety Grants

The State Government is committed to crime prevention and assisting the community to implement locally-based projects.

The Crime Prevention and Community Safety Grants program offers grants of up to $100,000 over 12 months to community groups, local government councils and not-for-profit organisations to help keep our communities safe.

Heywire Youth Innovation Grants

Each year, Heywire Competition winners attend the Heywire Regional Youth Summit to develop eight ideas to improve regional Australia for young people.

This is a fantastic opportunity for youth action councils, community development groups or not-for-profit organisations to apply for funding to trial one of the ideas in their community.
Community organisations are invited to apply for grants of up to $10,000 from the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) to make these ideas a reality.

AMP's Tomorrow Fund

AMP's Tomorrow Fund is once again offering $1 million in grants to amazing Australians doing great things.

Now in its third year, this unique grants program is open to individuals of all ages, walks of life and abilities.  In 2015, AMP's Tomorrow Fund awarded grants to 42 AMP Tomorrow Makers, including artists, athletes, inventors, social innovators, scientists, writers, dancers and disability advocates.
AMP is now seeking more talented Australians who are working hard on a project of passion but just need a financial boost to take it to the next level.

Restart - help to employ mature workers

The restart wage subsidy is a payment of up to $10,000 if you employ eligible mature age job seekers for 12 months or more.

To receive this wage subsidy, you need to employ a job seeker who:
  • is 50 years of age or older
  • has been on income support for six months or more
  • is registered with a jobactive or Disability Employment Services of Community Development Programme provider.

Aged Persons Welfare Foundation

The purpose of the APWF is to provide financial support and encouragement to organisations throughout Australia devoted to improving the welfare and quality of life for elderly people.

With the aim of assisting elderly people, the APWF would like to receive grant applications from organisations that:
  • provide care in the form of entertainment or stimulation, or some other activity, which they are unable themselves to fund
  • assist persons living in their own or rented homes who need help to repair or maintain or alter their homes
  • assist persons who need holidays
  • support carers, who give most of their time caring for others
  • support volunteers or others who provide help and support to elderly people
  • purchase equipment, including wheelchairs, beds and computers to provide for the needs of their aged residents.
Applications for grants required next financial year must be received by 30th June, 2016.
