Back In Motion Chiropractic Welcomes Nicala Codling RMT

Nicala gained her Massage Therapist Registration in 2010 and has taught at Everest college since 2012. Prior to being a RMT, Nicala worked as a Developmental Services Worker.

Not only is Nicala up to date with the latest myofascial therapy techniques, she also practices Craniosacral therapy and Reiki.

Craniosacral therapy, is a gentle, hands-on approach that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction as well as improve whole-body health and performance. The approach releases restrictions in the soft tissues and is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction.

Reiki, is a form of healing which accesses universal life force energy. It addresses physical, emotional, mental and spiritual imbalances. The benefits include stress reduction and relaxation, which triggers the body's natural healing abilities and improves and maintains health.

Nicala's approach to massage therapy offers an environment that promotes well being and encourages the optimal health of her clients.

Nicala will be available for appointments Wednesdays and Fridays, but also has evening and weekend appointments available when scheduled in advanced. (Her last appointment available is 9pm daily)

Join us in welcoming Nicala to our team!

 Dr. Amanda's Chiropractic Table

Equipment of the Month

Dr. Amanda has the "Cadillac" of tables. It allows for multiple chiropractic techniques to be used such as Thompson, COX, Diversified, Activator, Sacral Occipital, Cranial, CMRT, Graston,  and Myofascial tissue work. Although Dr. Amanda mostly uses the first three techniques, she is trained in a variety which she keeps in her "chiropractic toolbox" for those patients that may need a different approach.

A Thompson Drop Table is designed with 4 pieces (cervical/neck, Thoracic/chest, Lumbar/low back, and pelvic piece) that pop up. With pressure applied in downward fashion, the table drops 1/2" providing the patient with easy, painless adjustments. The main benefit of this technique is that the motion tricks muscles to relax and in turn allows for adjustments that are completely painless. When doing these adjustments, the patient only hears the noise of the table moving down.

This type of machine is capable of providing adjustments for those with hip replacements, pregnant women throughout their whole pregnancy (with use of pregnancy pillow on top of table) and other types of situations.  Using this equipment is extremely easy on the chiropractor, especially with patients who resist manual adjustments or their muscles are very tight.

In addition, this table is a Cox Flexion/Distraction Table, meaning that the low pelvic piece unlocks to allow for a passive stretch to occur either in the up and down (flexion/distraction) motion or the side to side motion. The benefits of this treatment is that the patient will not experience pain, there won't be any noise from the adjustment, and it is a passive motion and  stretch.

Various uses include: osteoporotic patients, those with tight muscles, patients with disc bulges/herniation issues (allows for the disc to gap and allow it to wiggle it's way back into it's proper position),  spinal stenosis, post-surgical continued pain and pregnancy related back pain. This technique is easy on chiropractor as well.

The High/Lo component of the table, or what Dr. Amanda calls "the Frankenstein",  has the ability to change from being horizontal to standing a patient up, or the reverse, having the table vertical so the patient can stand on the foot board to be lowered into a horizontal position. This is useful when patients come in with muscle spasms or discomfort and getting on or off the chiropractic table is difficult. This is very beneficial to the chiropractor because there is no need to lift patient up off the table with potential of hurting their back too!

How to stay cool this summer

When it's hot and humid out, it's all too easy to skip your workout and stay indoors to enjoy the A/C. But getting outside in Mother Nature can have positive psychological and physical benefits. Greg Wells, an associate scientist in Physiology and Experimental Medicine at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, gives his hot-weather rules for your workout.

Wells' rules for handling heat:

1. Embrace it.

2. Wear light-coloured clothing.

3. Pay attention to your body.

4. Sweat it out.

5. Keep an eye on the kids.
