Hi friends!
Just a quick note to tell you about a few upcoming events and share my expressions of gratitude to those who continue to support this work!
Raspando coco in Manila this Saturday at the Food, Culture and Society Summit
I am honored to have been invited as one of 6 speakers at this virtual forum organized by St. Scholastica’s College in Manila with attendance of over 1000 students of colleges and universities in the Philippines and worldwide.
It sparks a special kind of joy to have the opportunity to share stories about Afro-Ecuadorian foodways to an audience in the Philippines sharing very similar cultural heritage and histories surrounding coconuts.
This event will place this Saturday May 8, 2021 at 01:30 PM Philippine Time, which is midnight CST on Saturday. Nonetheless, it will be broadcasted live on Facebook and recorded there https://www.facebook.com/SSCManilaSHLRM/
12 Week Critical Thinking Course Starting Next Friday - Join Me!
Please sign up and join me and my friend and colleague Ashok Panikkar starting next week in his upcoming course on Critical Thinking. For me, Ashok’s DemoSapiens classes have been a complement to therapy sessions, in the sense that they have pushed me to deeply reflect upon and re-check deeply held ideas and beliefs, as a healthy way to stay sane and in touch with reality. I think of his classes as a mind-fitness challenge or workout which are key to my mental health. Every session is an adventure in un-learning and observing my thinking processes, which translates into higher self-awareness and better and stronger personal and work relationships.
Join me and let’s (un)learn together! Sign up here, scholarships are available shorturl.at/hwFX2
Note to foodies: Last week Ashok facilitated a discussion session with his DemoSapiens students about the movie “The Great Indian Kitchen” (on Amazon US), a deliberation about food, cooking, women's roles and menstruation. It was a fascinating discussion. If would like to get a taste of what Ashok’s sessions are like, please email me to access the session recording.
Gratitude - Screenings and Guest Speaker Invitations
To Professor Leofel Vergara for reaching out and kindly inviting me to speak at the virtual event on Food, Culture and Society at St. Scholastica’s College in Manila taking place this coming Saturday.
To Professor William Hope, my grad school colleague and friend at Illinois, for hosting a screening and having me as a guest with his students discussing food anthropology at Knox College this past Thursday.
To Dr. Nilsa Rodriguez-Jaca for hosting a screening and Q&A with her students at the Culinary Institute of America in New York back in March 2021.
¡GRACIAS! ¡GRACIAS! ¡GRACIAS!
