A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD:
On October 14th, SLSA hosted a Neighborhood Town Hall. All residents within one half mile of the range were invited to express their opinions and feelings about living close to the gun club. Approximately 40 of the 350 neighbors invited came to the event. As expected some of our neighbors are very enthusiastic or accepting about living near us, and others are not. Although a poll was not taken, it appeared that a majority of those attending support our presence.
Both the neighbors supporting SLSA and those against said that “NOISE” was their major concern. All of the neighbors are very sensitive to any shooting either before or after the posted hours. They also complained about gunfire and the use of the loud speakers on the weekends. I found it surprising that the complaints focused on our weekend use, and not the week day use of the ranges. It is on the weekends that SLSA hosts special events and matches.
At the conclusion of the Town Hall, I felt that although many of our neighbors accept SLSA, they would prefer not hear from us nearly every weekend.
In 2017, the Board is going to consider changes to its weekend activities and how they are managed to reduce the noise levels. This may require eliminating certain special events and matches or changing how they are held to minimize the noise.
It goes without saying that the continued existence of our Association is dependent on establishing and maintaining a good relationship with our neighbors. As a member, you can reduce noise levels by observing the following:
A. Only shoot during posted hours. Never shoot before 9:00 a.m. and stop shooting at or before the time posted (Red Range Lights will be Flashing). The cease fire time varies with the season and may be as early as 4:00 p.m., but it is never later than 6:00 p.m. If in doubt, do not shoot. If you are wrong your membership will be revoked for life.
B. Remember that the rifle and handgun ranges are “slow fire” ranges. Unless you are participating in a sanctioned Tactical Pistol Match on the LE Range, it is always “slow fire” and you may not exceed one shot per second.
C. Always be aware that you are discharging a firearm in a rural residential area and that when you pull the trigger a neighbor is going to hear it. When firing a high power or magnum firearm try to schedule your range session at a time that is least annoying to the adjacent residents. For example, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. is a good time, because many residents are either at work or gone for the day. If the range is open until 6:00 p.m.; avoid these noise makers after 5:00 p.m.
D. If you are shooting for an extended period of time, try to minimize the use of high power and magnum firearms. Their noise level is extreme and carries quite a distance. Develop your shooting skills with a .22 rim fire or use reduced loads.
E. If you see someone abusing the range rules, speak up and either remind the person of his/her responsibilities or report the incident.
Until next month. Nick Mosich, Vice President SLSA
