A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD

The New Year ushered in some changes and a new direction for SLSA.  This year the Board will focus on the needs of our members and ways to increase voluntary participation in the Association.  We recognize that every member is part of the SLSA family.  SLSA offers every member a place to enjoy an active role. Everyone is encouraged to join a committee.  You can learn about the committees on our website and fill out an application to join.  Click Operating Procedures and download.  Open the Operating Procedures and go to Appendices 2 & 3.

Other news around the range,

MEMBER SURVEY:
The member survey was emailed to all SLSA members.  You are encouraged to complete and return the survey.  The survey results will assist the Board in deciding what actions are needed to improve our Association and make your experiences safer and more enjoyable.
SLSA FACEBOOK PAGE:
SLSA has reopened its Facebook page.  Ken Bryant, the social media director, manages the page.  You can read more about our Facebook presence and how to join the page in Ken’s article in this newsletter.

EASTER HAM SHOOT:
On March 25th, SLSA will host the annual Easter Ham Shoot.  Participants can test their skills with a shotgun, rifle or handgun.  The 200 yard iron target will be open for the long distance shooters.  The event is always fun and provides many a nimrod bragging rights for being the best shot.  The entry fee is $7.00 per match, and the winner has the choice of either a ham or $15.00 cash.
On Saturday March 24th, there will be a work party to help tidy up our facility for the shoot.  All members are encouraged to come out and lend a hand.  SLSA will serve a lunch of pizza and drinks to all those who come and help.  Service Credits and a $10.00 dues credit is also given to those who help with the cleanup.

WOMEN ON TARGET:
On Sunday March 10th from  8:00 am to 4:00 pm, the Women on Target handgun class will be held at the clubhouse.  The class is sponsored by the NRA.  The class is open to women only.  It is an introductory class on the use and handling of handguns.  The cost is $40.00.  If you are interested in attending see the SLSA website for more information.

TRAP & SKEET:
On January 21st, SLSA held a members’ appreciation shoot.  Sixteen shotgunners took advantage of the 150 clay targets (6 rounds of trap & skeet) and lunch for $20.00.  It was a good time enjoyed by all.  The high overall shotgunners were Jerry Dillard and James Wiley.  Barbara Thorpe and Rick Johnson also made impressive showings.
Commencing January 1, 2018, California began regulating ammunition sales.  The new laws will be phased in through July 1, 2019.  There is much uncertainty and confusion surrounding the new regulations.  Until SLSA is able to clarify the situation it will suspend the sale of all shotgun shells effective immediately.
The new laws do not affect the sale of reloading components.  SLSA will continue to sell reloading components for shot shells to members.

RANGE SAFETY:
The overall number of members observing the Operating Procedures and Range Rules in January was very good.  Most members followed the new rule requiring cased firearms to be uncased and re-cased on the firing bench.   The handling of handguns and ammunition behind the “Yellow Line” on the pistol range was reduced.  There were few incidents of rapid fire; which is greatly appreciated by our neighbors.
We have noticed that a number of members are still not visibly wearing their membership cards.  This is required by the Operating Procedures.  If the situation does not improve, the Board will consider sanctioning violators with a 2 week membership suspension for each violation.
Please observe the Operating Procedures.  They are for your benefit and the safety of everyone.  You may download a copy of the current Operating Procedures from the SLSA webpage.

Until next time.

On Behalf of the entire SLSA Board,

Nick Mosich, President

S.L.S.A. HIGHPOWER RIFLE PRESENTS......

People have come up to us over the years and said, "gee, I'd
like to come out and shoot the highpower match". "Great, what
kind of rifle do you have?" " A Savage in 7mm with a 3x9 scope"
"Uhhhhhh.." The Sporting Rifle match we are opening up is a
effort to accomodate the person with an average hunting rifle.
It will be shot concurrently with our regular Highpower program,
the only difference is that the Sporting rifle shooters will shoot
five rounds during the rapid-fire strings instead of the ten rounds
Highpower shooters fire--that gives the Sporting rifle shooter
time to reload.

Our Highpower program is the 50 shot National Match Course
--10 shots offhand (standing), 10 shots rapid-fire sitting or
kneeling, 10 shots rapid fire prone, and 20 shots slow-fire prone.
The Sporting rifle shooters will shoot 5 shots during the rapid
fire strings, starting with two rounds in the rifle and loading three
shots during the string. The Sporting rifle shooters will be scored
seperately from the Highpower shooters with a 400 point aggre-
-gate instead of a 500 point total.

The Sporting rifle match is open to any centerfire rifle with
any sights--however, it is intended for hunting type rifles.
Military and match type rifles with the capacity to be quickly
reloaded with clips, box magazines or the like, will be put in
the Match rifle class of the regular highpower program at the
Match directors discretion.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED--We do our thing out in the dirt in front
of the benches, so some kind of shooting mat is needed to keep
you and your gear off the ground. It doesn't need to be fancy,
an old blanket or piece of carpet works fine, just as it's long
enough to lay down on and wide enough to keep your rifle and
ammo by your side. Club mats will be available for rental for
$1.00. If your scope is strong enough to see your impacts at
100 yards, great, otherwise you may consider bringing a
spotting scope. Slings are optional, however we tend to use
them real heavily--if you keep this up, you will get a good one!

Our match starts at 9:00 AM, signups start at 8:30, but it is
a good idea to get there around 8:15 so we can get you
properly briefed and acclimatized. It's $7.00 to shoot the
match, and we also shoot a .22 prone any-rifle match after
we're done for an additional $3.00. We don't have a cash box
to make change, so exact change is greatly appreciated!!!
Come on out and shoot that rifle of yours in some real-world
positions! Please contact me at duard-5@sbcglobal.net with
any questions, or just come on out and check us out, we are
easy to deal with! We shoot the second Saturday of the month,
please check the club calendar for details.

Thanks for your interest,
Duard Danielson

Hi there Santa Lucia Sportsmen’s Association members and Happy New Year to you all. My name is Ken Bryant, I have been a member for just over a year now and I have volunteered to assist with the Public Relations committee. My primary objective will be helping with developing a new website and PRIVATE Facebook page.
I am excited about this opportunity and look forward to meeting and interacting with the members of the association. I originally hail from the great city of New Orleans, and grew up hunting and fishing throughout South Louisiana in what we call the “Sportsman’s Paradise”, and if you ever done any hunting or fishing there you would certainly understand why we call it paradise.  My family also ran a wonderful Cajun seafood restaurant just outside of New Orleans, where we expertly prepared those sportsman’s delicacies as us Cajuns are known to do. Don’t worry – I brought the recipes with me!
I’ve lived in California for 20 years now, my wife and I live in one of the original Colony homes here in Atascadero and we are thrilled to live in such a beautiful part of the world. I’ve spent just about all of my life in sales and marketing, I’m a local real estate broker, and I hope that I can bring some of my technical knowledge to our modern communication platforms like the website and Facebook page so we can interact and share ideas more effectively as we grow.
So – one of the first objectives I’ve been given is to help members migrate over to our new PRIVATE Facebook page. Because of the sensitive nature of our chosen sport we felt that keeping our page private to members only would be the best choice for the group and help to protect our member’s privacy. In order to accomplish this we created a new Facebook name and account under the name of Santos Lucia.

Santos Lucia
Santos Lucia is the founder and administrator for our PRIVATE Facebook Page – Santa Lucia Sportsmen’s Association. You can go on to Facebook and friend Santos Lucia and ask to join the club, or you can send me an email at Ken@KenBryantRE.com and let me know that you would like to join. Once you are in the group you will have access to the club schedule, updates and postings in the group. The private group will be open and available to members only so, you won’t be part of the group if you are no longer a member of the club.
We will also be working on a new website next and appreciate your input, patience and encouragement as we grow our communications platforms and create a larger sense of community within our group. Thank you for this opportunity to serve you all. I look forward to meeting everyone and having some fun at the range together!
Ken Bryant
