SLSA February 2013 Newsletter

Happy New Year to all!
Last year was a busy year at the gun club. As most of you know we have some members that have volunteered to help out being assistant range managers. Their main duties are safety and making sure the people using our club are members. If you are approached listen to them and thank them for giving their time to make our gun club a safer place to shoot. If you see someone doing something unsafe or against club rules and you don’t want to approach them you can contact one of the board members with a time and date. We can check our security system and see what took place and contact the people involved.
We all need to read the SOP’s from time to time. The Board has just gone through the sops and range rules and has made some changes. One of the changes has to do with the shooting line on both the rifle and pistol ranges. The one shot per second rule was also put into place; our neighbors thought we were allowing automatic weapons to be fired at the club. You can view the sops on the website or contact the secretary for a copy. It is your responsibility to keep up with and follow all the range rules. We use the website to keep you members abreast of what is happening, if the range is going to be closed for repairs or if there is shoots scheduled. You should always check the website before planning a day at the range.
We extended the cement and roof on the pistol range. And we have completed putting the sound boards on the back of the rifle and pistol range cover. Part of the cement slab at the rifle range was coming up and caused a hazard; we had a couple of member’s trip on it. We had to close part of the rifle range down while it was being repaired but it turned out good. We appreciate your cooperation while repairs are being done.
We put in for a NRA grant to install sound boards on the ceiling of the rifle and pistol ranges and our grant was accepted.
This year some of our goals are to plant trees along the fence at the south end of the property, do some repairs in the club house and replace the lids on the trap houses.
We have two 4-H groups that are using the LE Range to instruct juniors on shooting. We just started our junior trap session and have a lot of returning juniors in our class. Some of these juniors went to the California State Shoot last year and shoot well. The shotgun program is sponsored by the NRA. The junior rifle program has been a great success, the juniors are preparing for a major shoot in March, good luck to all.
This past year we were grandfathered in with the NRA to become 100% NRA. What this means is all new members must join the NRA. We also added to our renewal forms for next year a place to enter your NRA number.
On December 7, 2012 the 514th Signal Company came out to the club with their families and shot at our range. There were about thirty people involved and they had a good time.
March 24th is our Ham shoot; we will be shooting trap, quail walk, rifle and pistol. On March 23rd we will have a work party, come out and help do some cleaning and maintenance.
At the end of March last year’s trap director Ken Weaver is stepping down. The skeet director position has been vacant for over a year. We are looking to fill both positions, anyone interested contact a board member.
Have fun and shoot safe.
