A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD

As a nonprofit corporation, SLSA relies upon the generosity of its members to volunteer their time to assist in the operations and management of the Association.  We are quickly approaching the end of the year and are preparing for operations in 2018.
This year our members have generously given their time by participating on committees, helping to staff events and attending work parties.  Approximately 175 members are in a committee or assist the Association in other ways. A specific example of the volunteering spirit of our membership is the Safety / RSO Committee.  The committee currently has 56 members; including 44 active RSO’s.  That is nearly 7% of our total membership.    These devoted members are NRA certified and act as range officers to help keep the ranges safe for all of us.
Next year, SLSA will require the same, if not more, help from our membership to maintain its high operating standards and to not raise the annual dues.  Listed below are positions available to members willing to go that extra mile and help the Association continue its mission to provide a safe, friendly and economical place to enjoy the outdoors and shooting sports:
BOARD of DIRECTORS:  The board of directors is elected annually by the full members at the November meeting held on the first Tuesday of the month.  SLSA has 12 director positions.  A full member in good standing is eligible to run as a director.  Being a director can be time intensive, and should only be sought by those who truly care for the long-term future of our Association.  Currently, a director is required to attend both the general meeting on the first Tuesday of the month and the Board meeting held on the third Tuesday.  Directors are asked to hold an office or committee chair position.  If interested in a position on the Board you may either apply through the Board or submit your name for the general ballot.
OFFICERS:  The officers of the Association are appointed by the Board and hold office for one year.  While many Board members are also officers it is not a requirement and a full or associate member can hold an office without being elected to the Board.
For 2018, the Board is seeking a dedicated member for the position of EXECUTIVE OFFICER.  The EO is responsible for the range facilities, the coordination of range programs and shall establish such use of the range rules as may be required to promote maximum safety on the range.
COMMITTEE CHAIRS:  SLSA has fifteen separate committees that assist in the operations and maintenance of our facilities and to sponsor matches in various disciplines.  The following committees are seeking either a full or associate member to head the following committees:
a.)  PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE is looking for a co-chair to help in the development of SLSA’s social media and internet profile.  An interested candidate should have experience with Facebook and other social media platforms and be willing to manage and regularly update the Association’s internet profile.
b.)  SHOOTING SPORTS COMMITTEE:  This Committee oversees all events and matches held by SLSA, and manage the match directors for all regularly scheduled matches.  The Board is the Committee Chair, and is seeking a co-chair to assist in this function. The co-chair will work directly with the Board and will be mainly responsible to help coordinate the events and insure that they are properly staffed.  Interested candidates should have experience in event coordination and be an outgoing individual that is capable of working with many diverse personalities.
c.)  TACTICAL PISTOL GROUP:  The TP matches are an important feature for SLSA and its members.  These matches were discontinued this year due to the resignation of the committee’s chairs.  SLSA is looking for one to three members to lead the committee and revive the program.  Interested members must have experience in coordinating and hosting shooting matches and a working knowledge of IDPA and /or USPSA rules and TP course set up.  The TP matches are limited to pistol only.  No shotgun or carbine tactical matches events are allowed at SLSA.
If you are interested in applying for any of these positions, you may contact John Silva at slsaboard@gmail.com.  Applications will be accepted through September 19, 2017.

Until next time.
On Behalf of the entire SLSA Board
