A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD:
Since the last newsletter operations at the range have proceeded smoothly.  In general everything has gone well and we look forward to an active summer.  Yet, there is much to report on the happenings around the range:
KEN WEAVER
Ken Weaver and his wife June will soon be leaving the Central Coast for a new life in Idaho.  Ken has been a dedicated and tireless director and officer at SLSA for more than 25 years and was very instrumental in running our trap and skeet program.   His shoes will not be easy to fill.  We wish them the best and hope to see them in the future when they visit the area.
MEMBER SURVEY
The responses to the member survey are in and showed a general satisfaction with our operations.  Most members approved the changes to our procedures over the past several years, and were happy to see an effort to make the range more safe and user friendly.  All of those responding were in favor of sponsoring more programs for women shooters.
Some questioned the policies limiting guests to weekends and the service credit guidelines.  Without exception, these observations revealed a failure by the respondents to read and understand the new policies.
While the new guest policy limits guests to weekends; a member may host a guest during the week with permission of the Board.  To get permission, a member merely has to make an email or phone request to the Board stating the name of the guest and the date of intended use.  In reply the member will be directed to have the guest read and sign a release, pay the $5 guest fee and be responsible for the guest following all of the rules.
Those that questioned the “service credit “ policy fail to realize that service credits are intended as a voluntary service to SLSA.  Every hour donated by you to the Association assists in our operations and helps to maintain low membership fees.  If a “full member” cannot perform his/her five annual service credits due to family, job, health or other reasons, they may ask the Board for a waiver.  The Board looks upon such requests favorably and generally grants a waiver.
JUNIORS FIREARMS SAFETY CLASS
On June 23 from 9:00 to 11:00 am in the Clubhouse, SLSA will host a Junior Firearm Safety Class for all members and their children and grandchildren. The class is intended for juniors, ages 9 through 17, that have not taken a gun safety course and want to use slsa ranges under the new child safety policy.  The class is free and is given by certified instructors and addresses all aspects of safely handling and using firearms.  A junior under 13 must attend the class with their qualifying member.  If interested in attending the class or need more information, contact Nick Mosich at nmosich@yahoo.com or (714) 425-3581
WOMEN’S DAY AT THE RANGE
On Saturday August 11, 2018  from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, SLSA will host a day at the range exclusively for women to come and practice their skills on the handgun range.  For those needing a little help, experienced range officers will be present to assist in the use, handling and care of handguns.  All members, immediate family members and their guests are invited to participate.  You are encouraged to bring your own handgun and ammunition.  Loaner handguns will be available.  No fee will be charged.  If you would like to participate, please email Nick Mosich at nmosich@yahoo.com stating how many persons will be in your party, and if you need a loaner handgun .
DIRECTOR POSITIONS
It is not too early to start thinking about taking an active role in the governing of our Association and becoming a member of the board.  We will have several openings next year and are looking for qualified individuals to help in our mission as a sportsmen’s association.  Although the hours are long and the pay nonexistent, there is satisfaction in knowing that you are helping to sustain an outdoor heritage that has served our community since 1932.  If you are a full member and interested in serving on the board, you can email John Silva at slsaboard@gmail.com.
 EASTER HAM SHOOT
The Easter Ham Shoot was held on March 25th.  The weather was clear and warm, and a good time was had by all who attended.  Director Jerry Zalusky prepared a delicious lunch of barbecue ribs, toasted bread, beans and assorted salads.
The day before 40 members arrived for a work party to prepare the range for the event.  They were treated to a lunch of pizza and drinks.  Each working member was given service credits and a $10.00 dues credit.  We appreciate their efforts.  Without the participation of our members the range could not exist without drastic changes to both its means of operation and current due structure.
 JUNIOR SHOTGUN PROGRAM
The Junior Shotgun Program is in full swing.  This year there are 18 young men and women in the program learning how to competitively compete in trap and skeet.  Several participants are recognized on the state and national level.  One standout is Wyatt Hamby.  He has been participating in the program for 4 years.  He is ranked nationally and has achieved the highest scores in trap in several areas.  Next fall he will be attending Concordia University, Nebraska on a full scholarship to be on their trap team.   We look forward to following him through his college career as he excels as a student and possibly a future Olympian.
If you know a junior interested in joining the program or want more information contact Keith Baker at (805) 441-8077 or email at tobafactor@aol.com.
 HUNTER SAFETY COURSE
On July 10 and 14 SLSA will host a Hunter Safety Course.   The class is held at the clubhouse.  Attendees must attend all sessions for certification.  The fee for the course is $12.00.  You must pre-register for the class with the California Department of Fish & Wildlife at www.register-ed.com/programs/california. Then choose 'Traditional Hunter Education.
 MEMORIAL MONEY SHOOT
On Sunday May 27 at 9:00 am, a Memorial Day money Shoot will be held for all members and the public.  The entry fee is $10.00 for singles and doubles and $20.00 for handicap.  The entry fee includes a chicken barbeque lunch and drink.
For more information contact Butch Phillips at (805) 459-1040 or Gary Hazard at (805) 441-8725.
RANGE SAFETY:
Range safety is a concern for everyone.  Since our last message no major safety violations have been observed.  Please continue to follow the Operating Procedures.  They are for your benefit and the safety of everyone.  You may download a copy of the current Operating Procedures from the SLSA webpage.

Until next time.                                          On Behalf of the entire SLSA Board,

                                                                          Nick Mosich, President
