PAW PRINTS for July 2020

Please keep your outdoor pets safe in this heat! Effective July 1, new Virginia legislation makes it illegal to tether a dog outdoors in extreme weather. The new law also mandates that tethers must be at least 15-feet long and provides standards by which dogs must be cared for. The legislation expanded the definition of “adequate shelter” for family dogs. It prevents leaving tethered dogs outside when temperatures are below 32° Fahrenheit or above 85° Fahrenheit or when the weather service issues warnings for hurricanes, tornadoes and other severe weather.

Additionally, dogs must be provided adequate shelter during hot weather that is properly shaded and does not readily conduct heat. During cold weather, the shelter must have a windbreak at its entrance and provide bedding material (such as straw, cedar shavings, or similar) that is sufficient to protect the animal from cold and promote the retention of body heat. Let’s all work together to keep animals in our community safe. Be their voice.

July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month, and now is a good time to be sure all of your pets have collars with updated ID tags, and microchips to help them find their way safely, and quickly, back to you if they are ever lost. We are proud of the many animals we are able to reunite with their families, but it’s so much quicker and easier if they have identification. Update yours today!

The Fluvanna SPCA shelter building is still closed to the public.

We continue working to do our part to help cut down on the spread of COVID-19, and with our animals' and employees' best interests in mind by reducing foot traffic. The animals at the shelter continue to receive wonderful care just as they normally do, so no need to worry.

If you are interested in adopting, fostering, or if you would like to drop off donations during this time, you can make an appointment to do so by contacting our shelter manager: manager@fspca.org.

We appreciate your understanding and support during this difficult time for everyone, and we will be sure to keep you updated as soon as we will be open again to the public.

DID YOU KNOW?
  • Last month 21 animals found their forever homes, 10 were reunited with loving families, and 18 were transferred to wonderful rescue partners--a total of 49 animals with a second chance. Your shares, donations, and volunteer hours help to make these happy new beginnings possible. Thank you all!
  • Our Lonely Heart’s Club pets (animals at the shelter more than 6 months) have low adoption fees of just $20!  We currently have 1 pet in the club--This available cutie is: Tripp. Please share their photos and stories, to help them find the forever homes they’re waiting and wishing for.
  • July 31st is National Mutt Day! Here’s to all the wonderful mixed breed animals in our lives, and those still awaiting Forever Families. <3
HOW CAN YOU HELP?

DONATE!  We have been so thankful for the community support during these trying times. Our supporters have stepped up to help foster, they have donated much needed supplies, they have helped transport animals to and from veterinary care, and they have contributed to our Raise the Roof Capital Campaign which is just over half-way to our goal of $30,000! We are very excited to share that thanks to the generosity of local contractor, Melvin Johnson, and our donors, we have been able to address one of the goals of the campaign and the shelter has a new roof! Shelter staff have also been working on cleaning and repainting the inside of the building with the help of Rodney Olsen, but we still have more projects on our “to do” list, and we cannot afford to lose momentum now!

Due to concerns for COVID-19, we have not been able to participate in our usual adoption events, or host our summer fundraiser, and therefore we have seen a significant decline in donations. Although we do receive some monetary support from Fluvanna County for providing the county’s public animal shelter service, we would not be able to continue to make much needed facility improvements, or provide necessary medical care for the animals, without your donations. The Capital Campaign will continue through the end of the year and we need your help to reach our goal so that we are able to improve our medical isolation, the heating and air conditioning in some of our kennels, and update our website to attract more potential adopters and supporters. Can we count on your help?

Online donations specifically for the campaign may be made through the Go Fund Me link on our website (fspca.org) or at the following link: www.gofundme.com/FSPCA. You can also mail a check made payable to Fluvanna SPCA to the shelter: 5238 Union Mills Road, Troy, VA 22974, and please make sure to include the memo line “Capital Campaign.” Thank you for your continued support!

  • The shelter is currently in need  of flea and tick preventatives such as Advantix for dogs and Advantage for cats. You can view and order from our Amazon Wishlist. Remember to go through Amazon Smile to increase your donation. Thank you all for your generous donations!
  • Fostering! We are always in need of caring fosters, and now more than ever!  We currently have 3 dogs and 14 cats that can be fostered and/or adopted that are still at the shelter. For more information, please call us at 434-591-0123. Learn more here: http://fspca.org/foster.html .

Join our Board! We are seeking energetic new board members to join our volunteer Board of Directors which helps to oversee shelter operations including daily animal care, events, fundraising and community education. You do not need to live within Fluvanna County to be considered, but you would need to be able to attend monthly board meetings, which at this time are taking place virtually via Zoom. Prior experience with financial management, facility engineering, grant writing, or fundraising is a bonus! If you would be interested in learning more about joining our board, please contact Gerri Russell: president@fspca.org.
Pizza! Ordering in these days? Remember that your online order to our Palmyra Papa John’s makes a donation to the shelter at the same time!
PUPDATES! Senior spot light! Our senior girl Darla, a sweet older gal, is looking for a comfy, cozy forever home! Darla is estimated to be about 10 years of age and takes daily joint health supplements to help her as she ages. Darla would benefit from a home without other pets or young children, to enjoy a quiet life where she can make the most of her golden years. She is calm and prefers leisurely walks--Darla walks great on leash and is very gentle! This lovely senior would make a great house buddy, loves nap-time and will snooze right next to you. If you're looking for a sweet friend, please call the shelter at 434-591-0123 from 9am-5pm or email our shelter manager at manager@fspca.org to arrange a time to meet this special girl.
KITTY TALES! Meet our handsome fellow Tripp! What a perfect name for this boy--Tripp well, he is a trip. He is a friendly boy, but right now he is scared of being held. Tripp loves toys-- especially the ones that make noise. He lets you rub him, and when you stop he will try to grab your hands to pull you back to him—sudden movements can scare him, so you need to be patient. When Tripp gets comfortable with you though, he will lick your hand like a dog.

His foster family shared that his favorite treats are Temptations, and he will meow until he gets them. Tripp will need a family that can take their time with him, so he can learn to trust you, and gain confidence in his new surroundings. He has done very well at his foster home, has gained trust in them and will cry for their attention now. The fosters stated that he will even let the foster Dad rub him now. They report that Tripp is doing very well, and coming out more and more. He is current on all shots, micro-chipped and neutered. Contact the shelter if you’d like to meet this pawesome fellow!

FOREVER HOMES <3

Shiloh was at the shelter for more than 6 months. No one looked at him because he was so shy and wary of strangers. I visited him every week for more than 6 months. Finally the right person came along and took Shiloh home. His new family has done everything right. They allowed Shiloh to take his time to warm up to them, they made him a safe place where he could rest comfortably--they walked him 4-5 times a day (therefore he had no accidents in the house). They were patient, and their patience paid off. Shiloh loves his new ‘Mom and Dad’ and his new home. All too often, people take a dog home, and then bring him/her back when, after a few days, the dog does not meet their expectations. Shiloh has the perfect forever home with people who understood what he needed. Love you, boy!” Pam VanDerbeek FSPCA Board Member

Thank you to Pam, and to our kennel staff, for always being there for our shelter pets in need, especially the shy ones. You make so many second chances possible.
