PAW PRINTS for September 2020
Did you know that September 28th is World Rabies Day? Please be sure that all of your furry friends are up to date on rabies vaccinations to help ensure a healthier life for them, and a safer community.

The Fluvanna SPCA shelter building is still closed to the public.

We continue working to do our part to help cut down on the spread of COVID-19, and with our animals' and employees' best interests in mind by reducing foot traffic. The animals at the shelter continue to receive wonderful care just as they normally do, so no need to worry.

If you are interested in adopting, fostering, or if you would like to drop off donations during this time, you can make an appointment to do so by contacting our shelter manager: manager@fspca.org.

We appreciate your understanding and support during this difficult time for everyone, and we will be sure to keep you updated as soon as we will be open again to the public.

~ FSPCA Board and Staff

DID YOU KNOW?
  • Last month 23 animals found their forever homes, 13 were reunited with loving families, and 42 were transferred to wonderful rescue partners--a total of 78 animals with a second chance. Your shares, donations, and volunteer hours help to make these happy new beginnings possible. Thank you all!
  • Our Lonely Heart’s Club pets (animals at the shelter more than 6 months) have low adoption fees of just $20!  We currently have 1 pet in the club-- this available cutie is a handsome cat named Tripp. Please share their photos and stories, to help them find the forever homes they’re waiting and wishing for.
September 20-27th is National Dog Week! Be sure to plan some special celebrations with your pup friends—and share them with us on our Faccebook page. We’d love to see all the wagging tails!
HOW CAN YOU HELP?

DONATE!  We have been so thankful for the community support during these trying times. Our supporters have stepped up to help foster, they have donated much needed supplies, they have helped transport animals to and from veterinary care, and they have contributed to our Raise the Roof Capital Campaign which is over half-way to our goal of $30,000!

Due to concerns for COVID-19, we have not been able to participate in our usual adoption events, or host our summer fundraiser, and therefore we have seen a significant decline in donations. Although we do receive some monetary support from Fluvanna County for providing the county’s public animal shelter service, we would not be able to continue to make much needed facility improvements, or provide necessary medical care for the animals, without your donations. The Capital Campaign will continue through the end of the year, and we need your help to reach our goal so that we are able to improve our medical isolation, the heating and air conditioning in some of our kennels, and update our website to attract more potential adopters and supporters. Can we count on your help?

Online donations specifically for the campaign may be made through the Go Fund Me link on our website (fspca.org) or at the following link: www.gofundme.com/FSPCA. You can also mail a check made payable to Fluvanna SPCA to the shelter: 5238 Union Mills Road, Troy, VA 22974, and please make sure to include the memo line “Capital Campaign.” Thank you for your continued support!

  • The shelter is currently in need  of monetary donations. You can also view and order from our Amazon Wishlist. Remember to go through Amazon Smile to increase your donation. Thank you all for your generous donations!
  • Join our Board! We are seeking energetic new board members to join our volunteer Board of Directors which helps to oversee shelter operations including daily animal care, events, fundraising and community education. You do not need to live within Fluvanna County to be considered, but you would need to be able to attend monthly board meetings, which at this time are taking place virtually via Zoom. Prior experience with financial management, facility engineering, grant writing, or fundraising is a bonus! If you would be interested in learning more about joining our board, please contact Gerri Russell: president@fspca.org.
  • Pizza! Ordering in these days? Remember that your online order to our Palmyra Papa John’s makes a donation to the shelter at the same time!
Support our Pearls for Pups fundraiser this coming Saturday and Sunday, the 19th and 20th. 100% of net proceeds will benefit the animals at the FSPCA.! Their earrings are fun and make wonderful gifts, but they also have fun stickers and other items to grab. Everyone is welcome to peruse the items before the 19th and 20th, but please wait to make your purchases until this Saturday and Sunday so that the FSPCA is the beneficiary--a fun way to raise funds for the care of our furry friends!
PUPDATES! Just look what good food, medical treatment, and some love, can do! Little Gabriella came into the shelter in bad shape. She was skinny and covered in mange, causing the loss of much of her hair. Still, as bad as she felt, she was happy and friendly. Now she is mange free, growing fur and has gained 15 pounds. She looks like a different dog! Your support helps us to help sweet pups like Gabriella! <3
KITTY TALES!  Zelda is a 4-year-old, pretty lady, who is available for adoption at the FSPCA! Here's what she wants you to know: "I have beautiful green eyes, I like to be petted, I am very curious, so I love to explore, and I have a pink flamingo toy that I would be happy to introduce you to! I don't love other kitties, but I have lived with a dog previously. I am considered a special needs kitty due to an autoimmune disease (Stomatitis), which mostly just affects my mouth, but don't worry, it is manageable, and doesn't stop me from eating (I love my wet food) or loving life! I Hope to see you soon!! "

Call the shelter to schedule an appointment to meet this pretty lady!

PAWESOME THANKS TO:
  • Thankful for our Rescue Partners! In the past month, 42 waiting pets were transferred to rescue partners. Thank you to:  Prince William County Animal Shelter, Animal Connections, Homeward Trails Animal Rescue, Green Dogs Unleashed, and A Better English Setter Rescue.
  • Thank you to our amazing fosters who are making a world of difference during these challenging times!
  • Grateful for community members who always step up with needed supplies of blankets and towels, animal food, litter, water bottles, a lawnmower and more! <3
  • Ever thankful for all of our donors--every donation matters, and makes a difference in the lives of our Fluvanna shelter pets.
  • We appreciate everyone who holds a birthday fundraiser on behalf of the furbabies—tails wag each and every time!
  • Thank you to our community business supporters like Papa John’s and Pearls for Pups, who help us raise funds in these challenging times.
  • We want to send a HUGE thank you to Quinn Shifflett, and his friends and family, for all of the hard work, time spent, and love that was put into all of these donations brought to our shelter last month! The pups and kitties also thank you!
FOREVER HOMES <3  We are still in search of a Forever home for Sheba. Sheba came to us with a bad skin allergy, mostly from fleas. She has shown much improvement, and you can see her fur slowly growing back with her medicated baths and supplements. Sheba has what we call "stranger danger." She does not try to bite, but she will avoid, and bark for some time, until you spend more time with her to earn her trust. Once you are able to do that, she loves to show you all of her toys.

Sheba was housed with other dogs and would do well in the home, but we would recommend conducting a meet with any resident canines to make sure they can be friends. She should not be housed with cats, as she can be prey driven. Sheba is a 3-year old, shorter pitty girl, weighing in at 60 lbs. If you are interested in meeting our Sheba, please call the shelter at 434-591-0123 to make an appointment.
Ready to meet your own new shelter pet? Contact our staff at 434-591-0123, and fall in love. Have an FSPCA alum or foster update of your own to share? You can message us on our Facebook page, or email outreach@fspca.org. We love to see our furbabies with their wonderful Forever Families!
Thank you for your ongoing support!
