PAW PRINTS for August 2019

Earlier this month, local pet lovers may have heard the news about a dog passing away after contracting leptosporosis from an area waterway. This is a bacterial infection, and not the same thing as the blue-green algae that is also in the news. Common exposure risks for lepto include exposure to or drinking from rivers, lakes or streams; roaming on rural properties (because of exposure to potentially infected wildlife, farm animals, or water sources); exposure to wild animal or farm animal species, even if in the backyard; and contact with rodents or other dogs. It is generally more common during dry seasons/ low water periods. Moving water helps to flush the environment clean.

The good news is that there is a vaccine available that covers several strains of lepto. If your dog goes outside in an area with any exposure to wildlife or livestock, check with your vet to see if a lepto vaccine is right for their lifestyle. In the meantime, avoid letting your dog drink from or play in standing /still water sources.

Check the link below for more information about lepto from the AVMA website. Stay safe.

  • Last month 29 animals found their forever homes, 9 were reunited with loving families, and 37 were transferred to wonderful rescue partners--a total of 75 animals with a second chance. Your shares, donations, and volunteer hours help to make these happy new beginnings possible. Thank you all!
  • Our Lonely Heart’s Club pets (animals at the shelter more than 6 months) have low adoption fees of just $20!  We currently have 5 pets in the club--available cuties are: Leon, Brent, Swirly, Thelma and Boone. Please share their photos and stories, to help them find the forever homes they’re waiting and wishing for.
  • There have been several recent news reports and online posts that a number of dogs have died from encountering toxic algae blooms during swims/play in affected ponds and water areas. This is especially an issue during hot temperatures and less rain. Please be aware and keep your furbabies safe.
  • From our friends at the Fluvanna Sheriff’s Department: A cat-astrophe was avoided this week thanks to a daring rescue by members of the Fork Union and Lake Monticello fire departments. In the mid-morning hours of August 24th, the Sheriff’s Office received a call from a construction worker doing road work on the Route 15 bridge over the James River. A kitten had somehow fallen between a gap in the bridge and was stranded under the bridge. Sheriff’s Deputies arrived and found the kitten was way beyond their reach. They requested assistance and both fire companies arrived to help. Firefighter James Stuart of Fork Union rappelled over the edge of the bridge and was able to rescue the kitten! Well done firefighter Stuart. The kitten is now safe and sound at the Fluvanna SPCA. If you would like to adopt the kitten, please contact the Fluvanna SPCA.
  • The shelter is currently in need of Purina puppy chow and cat and kitten canned food. You can view and order from our Amazon Wishlist. Remember to go through Amazon Smile to increase your donation. Thank you all for your generous donations!
  • Foster! You can help one of our shelter pets heal, grow, and/or learn about life in a home. Each foster brings our pets that much closer to a furever home of their very own. Learn more about fostering with us here.
We are still in need of a foster home for a kitty Mama, her kitten, and 3 other homeless kittens she took under her wing. We will need a foster home for this sweet family for roughly 8 weeks, and are looking for availability of the foster to be able to bring them into the shelter every 2 weeks for treatment updates. If you are interested, please call 434-591-0123.  We can provide food, bedding, and any other necessities. Thank you!

  • Thankful for our Rescue Partners! In June, 37 waiting pets were transferred to rescue partners. Thank you to: Orange SPCA, B.R.E.W., Green Dogs Unleashed, Peaceful Passings, Animal Connections and Dogs Deserve Better Blue Ridge.
  • We would like to take a moment to send a huge THANK YOU to a good Samaritan, aka an angel on earth, for paying $1,794.90 on our account through VETSS for all of the recent emergency animals we have sent there. If not for you, and donors like you, we would not be able to continue providing the best care possible! Although the donor wishes to remain anonymous, we do hope that you see this post and know how grateful we are for you. There are so many animals that come in especially in the warmer months that need emergency help. Donors, fosters, transporters and more are what allows us to keep going. Thank you all for your continued support toward our shelter animals! They all deserve a second chance at a good life.
  • We are honored to be nominated in the Rural Virginian's 2019 Readers' Choice Awards for Most Respected Nonprofit!
  • Thank you to Orvis and Sona Bank for hosting adoption outings for our shelter pets this month, and to our pawesome volunteers who show off our furbabies and make these events happen!
  • We’re so grateful for the amazing Foster Families who help to care for our animals in need. We couldn’t do it without you! <3
  • Thank you to this special young man for requesting his birthday gifts to go directly to the shelter animals. What a selfless and loving thing to do! The shelter animals and staff appreciate your kind heart and hard work! You are a wonderful role model. Thank you Quinn!! We hope you had a fantastic birthday!

FOREVER FAMILY <3 This beautiful photo and update on Fluvanna furry friend, Mack, who found his very own forever family last year, made us smile. :D

"Hi Fluvanna SPCA!

We adopted a sweet, sweet puppy from the FSPCA in June of last year, and just wanted to share a picture of Mack (formerly known as Bingles) enjoying a sunset hike on the year anniversary of his adoption.

We love having Mack as part of our family, and are so grateful for the care he received from you all while he was looking for his forever home. We could not love him more!

All the best,

Aaron and Kelly and Mack

PS: Kitties Victor and Dany (going on their 5 year adopt-iversary from the FSPCA) are both doing well too, although they still don't quite get why we wanted to add a dog to the family ;)"

Thank you for giving him a wonderful home Aaron and Kelly (and kitty siblings J), and for sharing this pawesome pupdate! It's always special to see our former shelter pets living their best lives.<3

We'd love to see your FSPCA alumni updates. Email to share the love.
