26 Jun 2022
Dear KDHS members and friends:
For our June event, we welcome back Senan Scanlan, whose lecture will be entitled The Pilot Boats of the Shannon Estuary.
Senan will talk about the Western Pilots and how they operated on the Shannon Estuary over a period of about 100 years.
Senan Scanlan was born on Scattery Island and lived there for four years before moving to Kilrush. He returned to the island during the school holidays. He has written extensively about his native island and its inhabitants, and also on the Vandeleur landlord family of Kilrush. He has also compiled some historical notes about Kilrush from 1760 to 1960 and has transcribed some memorial inscriptions from west Clare graveyards. All of his work is available on Clarelibrary.ie.
The lecture will take place on Tuesday 28 June 2022 at 8pm in the Teach Ceoil, Grace Street.
We are grateful to Senan for agreeing at relatively short notice to give this lecture when the lecturer originally scheduled became unavailable; Derek Mulcahy's lecture on The Fife and Drum Band Tradition of Limerick and Clare has been provisionally rescheduled for April 2023.
KDHS lectures are free to members, EUR5 for non-members, payable on the night only. New members are welcome. The annual membership fee (July-June) is EUR20.
For new members joining now, their first year's membership will run to June 2023.
If you are not able to attend this lecture, or any of our lectures, in person, then you can watch via Zoom.
Just follow the Zoom link below at the time of the lecture (8pm Irish Summer Time, Tuesday 28 Jun 2022) in order to participate.

Please note that we have had to increase Zoom security and are now using a waiting room for all Zoom events.
We will not admit you from the waiting room unless you identify yourself by your full name (first name and surname).
You will not be admitted if you use an alias such as "phone" or "tablet" or "computer" or "PC" (even if your real initials are PC) or "Kilrush" or "Clare" (even if your real name is Clare).
If you need to change your current alias to your real name:
* if you do not already have a username and password for Zoom, then sign up at
* go to
* sign in with your own Zoom username and password if necessary
* click the tiny "Edit" link towards the top right of the window
* type your real name in the Display Name box
* click the blue Save button
Then just make sure that you are logged in to the same Zoom account before entering the waiting room.
Please remember to remain muted during the presentation, particularly if you intend to take telephone calls or watch television or listen to the radio or use bad language to your barking dog at the same time (some people really do these things!). You may also want to keep your video off after being admitted to the Zoom call in order to prevent pressure on bandwidth at either end.
If you wish to participate in the discussion while muted, then you can select "Reactions" from the menu at the bottom of the Zoom window and select "Raise Hand" from the pop-up which appears. The hosts can then turn on your audio and video and allow you to participate.
