Dear KDHS members and friends

Our next Zoom lecture, entitled "Kilstifeen and phantom island traditions of the west coast" will take place at 8pm (Irish time) next Tuesday 25 May 2021.

The speaker will be Críostóir Mac Cárthaigh, Director of the National Folklore Collection at University College Dublin. With a background in folklore and archaeology, he has written widely on different aspects of Irish oral literature, vernacular architecture, traditional boats, and fishing. The cultural landscape of Atlantic island and coastal communities is of particular interest to him.

Tuesday's lecture will be about the mysterious Cill Stifeen, mentioned in a study of the 1607 tsunami that hit the southwest of England, and other phantom islands and destructive geological and weather events remembered in folk memory.

Just follow the Zoom link below at the time of the lecture (8pm Irish Summer Time, Tuesday 27 April 2021) in order to participate.

Please remember to remain muted during the presentation, particularly if you intend to take telephone calls or watch television or listen to the radio or use bad language to your barking dog at the same time (some people really do these things!).  You may also want to turn your video off in order to prevent pressure on bandwidth at either end.

The continuing pandemic has made forward planning difficult, but our secretary has put together this provisional list of events for the coming months:

There are links to the membership renewal form, to the ongoing fundraiser for the Kilrush WW1 memorial, and to our PayPal account from our website home page at
