Dear KDHS members and friends
Today marks the start of a very different National Heritage Week, which will run until 23 August as we move into the sixth month of COVID-19 restrictions.
Unfortunately, the ever-changing public health advice makes it impossible currently for us to make any long-term plans for the society.
The good news is that small outdoor events are currently permitted in County Clare, so we have organised a Cammoge Ferry Disaster Memorial Walk for next Wednesday evening, 19 August.
This guided walk will be in memory of the 41 people drowned in the ferry disaster at Cammoge Point on 12 December 1849 after they were refused admission to Kilrush Workhouse. This walk will re-enact the return journey taken by the people of West Clare who were refused admission to Kilrush Workhouse.
Meet at Regina House car park (on the Workhouse site) and depart at 6:30pm sharp to walk to Carnacalla.
Booking is essential as numbers are limited due to public health measures. We can have a maximum number of 50. To book, please email firstname.lastname@example.org using the subject line "Cammoge walk". Please include your telephone number in your e-mail for use in the unlikely event that contract tracing becomes necessary. Selecting "Going" on the Facebook event without confirming your attendance by email will NOT guarantee your place on the walk.
The walk is free for members and EUR5 for non-members, payable on the night only. New members are welcome. If you have not already renewed your membership for the year from July 2020-June 2021, please note that the annual membership fee of EUR20 is now due.
The weather forecast is promising, but please dress appropriately. We encourage attendees to wear a face covering.
The bad news is that we have decided to postpone the unveiling of the Kilrush WW1 memorial originally scheduled for next weekend until COVID-19 restrictions have been eased.
Our GoFundMe campaign to cover the remaining costs of the WW1 memorial is now over 60% of the way to its target. We are very grateful to all those who have donated. If you have not already made a contribution, then you will find all the relevant links on our website at
