January 2014

From the President's Boat

I hope that everyone enjoyed the Holidays!  It’s time to reflect on the past year, the family and friends you have, the new ones you gained and the contributions you made to help our Muskie fishery.  We accomplished a lot even though it was not everything that we would have liked to.  We have many more new ideas and things we would like to implement in 2014.
I believe that the greatest value of being a North Metro and Muskies Inc. member besides the direct impact on the Muskie fishery is the camaraderie and friends that you make.  I am sure that each of you has your own example of a lifetime friend that you made by being a member of the North Metro Chapter.  I know personally that I have made a number and looking to add more.  Catching fish with them, exchanging stories or giving tips is just the icing on the cake.  Our events provide a backdrop to help encourage this.  With your help we will try to strengthen those events and provide new fun opportunities.  I challenge each of you to reach out to existing and new members and make another new friend this coming year.  In the end camaraderie is what makes our Chapter successful.  It allows us to raise the funds and have the volunteers to promote and support a strong Metro Muskie Fishery.
December’s meeting speaker Josh Borovsky was outstanding and had tailored his presentation based on questions and topics pre-submitted by those in attendance.
All of our existing Officers were re-elected.  I thank each of them for their service last year and forthcoming service in 2014.  In addition, this will be my last year as your Chapter President.
Our Banquet is a little over a month away and volunteers are needed to work the Banquet.  There is still time to gather donations, which don’t have to be fishing related.  For every $10 in donations your will receive one raffle ticket for a Special Donation Drawing and one ticket for the General Raffle.  Contact Mike Riha if you can help or if you have items to donate.
Banquet tickets are available for the 9th Annual North Metro Chapter Annual All-You-Can-Eat Fish Fry Banquet on February 8, 2014.  It will be more fun and entertaining than last year.  The North Metro Sportsman’s Guide Clothing prize rack is ready to go with 40 – 50+ items including hunting, camo, fishing, winter gear, Carhartt, Under Armor, Ice Armor, GuideGear, Dickie, 10X, Russell Outdoors, Infinity, Walls and more clothing in various kids, women’s and men’s sizes.
Send in your photos (in large mega pixel format) for the Banquet and for the MN Muskie Expo.  Submit photos to Dan Mruz at
The Board is still working hard to update the North Metro Website and we appreciate your patience.  Further updates are in process.  We are looking for Members with website skills that can help.
The North Metro Chapter will debut a new and improved larger booth at the April 4 – 6, 2014 Minnesota Muskie Expo that will include a Catch-n-Release booth to educate fisherman on proper catch and release techniques, demonstrate the tools they should have in their boats, prize raffles and the benefits of being a Muskies Inc. member.  The NMMI 2013 MOC Mount Winners will be presented their mounts at the Expo.  We need volunteers to work the booth!  Our goal is sign up a number of new members this year.  More details to come in February.
Your Chapter needs your help with a variety of small tasks and projects throughout the year besides the Banquet.  We need additional new Board Members, a Chapter Secretary, a Members Only Contest & Photo Contest Chair, MN Minnesota Expo Co-Chairs and NMMI Members Challunge Tournament Co-Chairs.  Contact any of the North Metro Board Members if you can assist us!

Douglas Schelske, a long time member of North Metro Muskies Inc. passed away on December 23, 2013 at the age of 78. Although Doug could at times be overbearing when it came to fishing, it was clear he lived for it with a passion. Doug achieved a milestone on Nov 3, 2011 catching a 53” Muskie using a sucker rig at Lake Calhoun.

There will be a memorial service for Doug for on January 25 at the Cremation Society of MN at 4343 Nicollett Ave S. Visitation at 12:30 Service at 1:00.
Daniel Bever, age 81, of Marine on St. Croix, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on December 28, 2013. Dan graduated from Forest Lake HS, the University of St. Thomas, and received advanced degrees from the University of Minnesota and Mankato State University, with majors in social science, education, and high school administration. Daniel taught and coached at Medford Minnesota Public Schools; he was all school principal at Morton, Minnesota Public Schools, and concluded his teaching career in St. Paul at Wilson and Harding High Schools. Dan was resolute in his spiritual faith, an avid outdoorsman, a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Survived by wife of 57 years, Shirley; sons: John, Tom, grandchildren and countless friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 10, 2014 at St. Genevieve Parish Community Center, 6995 Centerville Road, Centerville, MN. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the Community Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Sharing and Caring Hands, Minneapolis, Catholic Charities or donor's choice.

January 2014 the new member ID card process will be implemented, but it will be ready to roll within the next few weeks for all members.
All member ID’s will be printed by members once accessing their account User Profile. There will be a link on the user profile page (upper right hand corner) that will allow them to print and retain their own ID Cards at ANY TIME. For family members the family head will be able to print the entire families ID’s.
Print Membership ID Card
Print All Family ID Cards
We will be eliminating MI supplying and ID cards effective 1/1/2014. This will save the organization dollars in monthly expenditures for the imprinting and managing of the ID cards.
We understand some of our members will not have access to computers or be able to print their own ID cards, in these cases they can contact the Secretary to have them produced and mailed to them, but this will be by request only. We will advise members of this in the January Issue of Muskie Magazine.
We understand change is difficult but we also have an obligation to the organization to remain fiscally responsible and to become part of the new wave of technology.

Next Meeting January 21

Pat Smith will talk about boat rigging and electronics at our January meeting.

Pat is an avid hunter and fisherman. He caught his first musky in 1976 on Lake of the Woods. He used to have to go to Wisconsin or up to the Longville area. Then came the late 80’s and early 90’s and they were right in his back yard. Thanks to Muskie’s Inc. they made his passion grow to an obsession that put him on the water almost every day for several years. That gave Pat a great opportunity to be part of the pioneering in the sport. He spent 22 years at the Thorne Bros., the best musky shop ever. Pat is now selling boats and electronics for Frankies Live Bait & Marine.

Meeting Winners

The four winners of the $15 Thorne Bros. Gift Card Raffle at our December Meeting were Pat Miller, Brad Patterson, Brad Patterson, (Brad won twice) and Steve Wernersbach. The winners of the Door Prize Lure Drawing were: Pat Miller, Dick Hamann, Tony VanDanacker, Jim Shannon and Mark Weiss.

Red Wing Lodge
August 9-16, 2014
On Sabaskong Bay
Lake of the Woods

Here’s a New Year Resolution That You Can Live With:

Resolved for 2014: Be a vital part of an annual outing that combines great fishing on beautiful shield waters with a resort base that is clean and comfortable, and is owned and run by a family that knows what muskie people need, and where everything works.

Smart move to act on the above resolution.  Make it happen!  Join the 2014 Muskie Inc. Red Wing Lodge Outing.  Dates for the coming season: August 9-16, 2014.  Last summer 18 fishermen enjoyed this trip, open to Muskie Inc. Chapter members and their guests.  This annual Muskie trip to Red Wing Lodge on Sabaskong Bay, Lake of the Woods, is a great choice for that first Canadian trip or for the veteran’s extra trip. Save your surprises for muskie action, you don’t need them at base camp. Red Wing Lodge offers a resort base that has been family owned and operated for more than 45 years.

The Bartlett family has hosted Muskie Inc. outings for years with personal and friendly service, so they understand what muskie people need and like.  Red Wing Lodge was Chapter Challenge headquarters in ’83, ’86, ’93, ’97, ’03, ’04, 2011, 2012, and again in August, 2014.  Check out the muskie information, including the Red Wing Lodge Hall of Fame, as well as the first live cam in Morson, at

Cost per person in housekeeping cabins will remain at $325 (US Funds) for 2014, which breaks down to just $46.43 per day for big-time Canadian muskie fishing.
Included in the full value of the 2014 Muskie Inc. trip:
* Free Dockage  ($72 value), Free Launch (both ways, $25 value)
* Free Dinner one night, courtesy of the Bartlett’s
* One Free Trip, given away in drawing, courtesy of the Bartlett’s
* Free Wireless Internet Service throughout the Resort
* Free Daily Bag of Ice; door prizes
Reservations require a $50 non-refundable deposit, made out to Red Wing Lodge. Deposits officially confirm reservation holds.  First come, first served.
Early deposits are appreciated by the Bartletts, these funds are used to purchase materials for cabin improvements, most of which can only be made over the winter.
For e.g., the Bartletts recently completed installing A/C units in all cabins.
