From the President's Boat
Thanks to your emails, phone calls to your Legislature Representatives and the strong lobbying effort by the MMPA at the Minnesota State Legislature, the anti-Muskie stocking legislation did not pass and the Minnesota DNR may be allowed to do its job. Although this legislation was targeted at only muskies, if it had passed it would have set an extremely bad precedence for possible future bad legislation affecting other species, public lake access to our states natural resources, hunting and more. This demonstrates how important it is that we have strong active chapters and members to help educate our government representatives in order to maintain our Muskie fishery and support the DNR so that it can do its legislated job based on science and not on bad politics.
Introduce some new people to our sport especially youths and maybe have them participate in a League Night with you. It is a great way to build new friendships, create new members and help us grow the North Metro Chapter.
We have made some slight modifications to our North Metro Chapter Members Only Contest for 2016 as follows:
The Tiger Division has been eliminated due to lack of participation and fish registered.
Patches and Individual & Annual Certificates have been eliminated.
To win the North Metro Laxx Replica Mount requires:
1) NMMI membership as of June 1st, 2016 and
2) Minimum size Muskie of 50 inches or greater for both Adult and Junior Mount Awards
All other rules apply which can be viewed on the North Metro Website.
Please note that we are now on our summer break so members can fish League Night and the other many scheduled events. There are no scheduled NMMI Members Meetings for June, July and August. We have lined up our full slate of speakers through the spring of 2017 and will resume with our fall schedule on September 20th at Coon Rapids VFW.
Our thanks to Sheraton Minneapolis West for allowing us the use of their pool on May 17th for the Annual Poolside Lure Demonstration by John Nelson and Dan Altman Thorne Brothers. The 25 people in attendance learned a few new tips, saw new baits and participated in the Jim Shannon lure liquidation garage sale to help support Mavis.
The Metro Muskies Tournament is Saturday June 11th and needs your participation. Your support directly helps the Minnesota Muskie stocking efforts led by Paul Hartman. $18,000 in great prizes will be awarded. Last date to enter in person is June 8th. More details can be found at www.metromuskietournament.com.
Saturday June 25th is the NMMI Jim Shannon F’em Members Challunge and Annual Picnic. Brian Klobe has built the travelling Trophy that incorporates Jim’s Wades Wobbler lure for the winner; we will have a raffle for a Jim Shannon custom built Muskie Rod and other prizes, lure swap, free picnic and more. More details will be forthcoming soon.
The 26th Annual JuneJam Tournament hosted by the North Metro is June 18th & 19th in Polk County WI. It is not too late to register and three are great prizes to win and lakes to fish. For more information go to our website http://www.nmmuskies.com/tournaments/june-jam/ or contact Steven Wernersbach at JuneJam@nmmuskies.com.
If you are interested in forming a Team and representing our Chapter in the Gil Hamm Chapter Challunge on Lake of the Woods August 24th – 26th please contact me.
Please contact any Board Member if you can help with the Chapter, State High School Tournament, Annual Picnic & Jim Shannon Members Challunge or any of our events.
Thank you each and every one that supports our Banquet and our Chapter throughout the year!

50 Years of Muskie Inc. and Red Wing Lodge Looks Better Than Ever
Q: Is it the resource or the quality of facilities and services at Red Wing Lodge that draws families and fishing partners back again and again over the years? It’s both!
On the resource side, over 14,000 recorded releases say a lot, say a lot about the resource and the resulting big fish culture that has developed over the years at Red Wing. On the side of facilities and service, this muskie camp is a big time player: big floating docks, a serious backup generator, air conditioning in all cabins, and special discounts for services for Muskie Inc. guests. Save your surprises for muskie action, you don’t need them at base camp. Red Wing Lodge offers a resort that has been family owned and operated for 50 years. The Bartlett family has hosted Muskie Inc. outings for years with personal and friendly service, so they understand what muskie people need and like.
The annual Muskie Inc. trip to Red Wing Lodge on Sabaskong Bay, Lake of the Woods, is a great choice for either that first Canadian trip or for the veteran’s extra trip. The convenience of a drive-in camp with the privacy you would expect on an island.
Dates for this year’s outing: August 6-13, 2016. Red Wing Lodge is a nine-time Chapter Challenge headquarters, in ’83, ’86, ’93, ’97, ’03, ’04, ’11, ’12 and again in 2014. Check out the Muskie information, including the Red Wing Lodge Hall of Fame, as well as the first live cam in Morson, at www.redwinglodge.net
Cost per person in housekeeping cabins remains at $350 (US Funds) for 2016, just $50.00 per day for big-time Canadian Muskie fishing.
Included in the full value of the 2016 Muskie Inc. trip:
* Free Dockage ($72 value), Free Launch (both ways, $25 value)
* Free Dinner one night, courtesy of the Bartlett’s
* One Free Trip, given away in drawing, courtesy of the Bartlett’s
* Free Wireless Internet Service throughout the Resort
* Free Daily Bag of Ice; door prizes
Reservations require a $50 non-refundable deposit, made out to Red Wing Lodge. Deposits officially confirm reservation holds. First come, first served.

Mini-Challunge with Twin Cities Chapter
The annual “Mini- Challunge†between our chapter and the Twin Cities chapter on White Bear Lake or Bald Eagle Lake is scheduled for June 28 this year. It is also one of the events for our chapter Summer Fishing League. So, come on out and help us win the Challunge and get credit for participating in the summer league.
Typically, our July chapter meeting is an “on-the-water†event and for the past several years has been the annual Mini-Challunge. This year we are moving the date from the first Tuesday in July to the last Tuesday in June so that it won’t conflict with possible July 4 events and more people can participate.
Fishing hours for the Mini-Challunge are from 5 - 9 pm and you can fish either lake. We would like to see that at least one person in your boat is someone from the Twin Cities chapter. That way each boat will have at least one person from each chapter. More than 2 people can fish from a boat. Your partner from the other chapter must witness your fish’s measurement. The chapter that catches the most fish (points awarded using Muskies, Inc. point system) will win.
All participants are invited to Rudy’s Red Eye Grill for treats after fishing. The losing chapter will treat the other chapter. Rudy’s is located is located on the east side of Hwy. 61 in the Best Western White Bear Country Inn.
