April 2020

From the President's Boat

I know that everyone has been affected in one way, form or another by the COVID-19 outbreak and business closures and hope that you are surviving.  Some members are using the time to spend quality family time, organize their tackle and do other home projects.  Take care, stay safe, and don’t get caught up in the hysteria and hopefully finding a supply of toilet paper is no longer an issue for everyone.

If you are looking for a job our friend Dennis Lappen has some opportunities available even during the State shutdown.  Contact me for more details.
Small business is the corner stone of American success and they need all of our support more than ever to survive.  During this time please don’t forget all of the friends of our Chapter and MI especially our Muskie Guides as their survival depends on all of us.  I know of examples of our guides having to sell off their lures and equipment already to try to get by because their other winter jobs have been closed down or impacted and also from a lack of bookings due to the Expo cancellation and uncertainty of the fishing season.  Now is a great time to help out and book a trip with them for this summer and fall.
Due to the ongoing National COVID-19 Emergency and the Governor’s stay at home order we canceled our Tuesday April 21st Members Meeting that was to feature renowned Mille Lacs Guide Steve Scepaniak, Predator Guide Service.  This will be rescheduled to a future date and most likely next year at about this same time.

In addition it was recently announced that the Minnesota DNR suspended all egg taking operations for all species for the year.  This is expected to impact Muskie stocking throughout Minnesota for 2020.  The DNR stated that “Fish populations naturally are made up of fish hatched in different years, so a missing or weak-year class is not uncommon,” Brad Parsons, DNR fisheries section manager, said. “In fact, in lakes with natural reproduction, a strong year class often follows a weak year class, so not stocking for one year might actually benefit the following year’s stocked fry.”

We have high expectations that stay at home order will be lifted by May 1st and that we will hold our Annual May 19th Members Picnic at Bald Eagle Lake Regional Park, our Annual Board Meeting and all of our other events including June Jam, WAM Fishing Event & League Nights.  So mark your calendars.  We will update everyone as the situation progresses as to the status of all our events via our newsletter, Website and Face Book pages.

Online registration for June Jam 2020 is now open and we have extended the Early Bird Registration Discount Date to May 28th.  We promise that it will be a safe experience!

A happy belated Easter and Passover to all of you.  I hope that you were able celebrate and enjoy it, especially the 60 + degree temps on that Saturday before the snow and cold arrived on Easter Sunday.  I maintained social distancing but was able to play the Easter Bunny and deliver filled Easter Eggs on that Saturday for an Easter Egg Hunt diversion for the kids of three of our North Metro families.

Details on League Night and the MOC Contest will be forthcoming soon and posted in the next Newsletter, our Website and our Face Book page.
Don’t forget to fish with our New Members that have recently joined our Chapter: Nic Barratt, Erika Blegen, Rick Drontle, Patricia Hauslein, Bob Hulleman, Bruce Johnson, Ashlee Just, Jarrod Roering and James & Sarah Woodrich.  Welcome them into the Chapter, get know them and show our hospitality.  Please reach out to them during one of Chapter meetings and if you get a chance fish them during League Nights or some other opportunity this summer and get your extra League Night bonus points.
Go check out the very interesting article in the Duluth News Tribune regarding What are muskies eating in Miltona? Local lake part of Minnesota diet study on four major game fish” that the preliminary study results show that Walleyes are very minimal part of and one of the last things in the diet of Muskies.
Brian Herwig of the Bemidji DNR office and Jeff Reed of the Glenwood office lead the overall research project under a contract with the Minnesota DNR and Bemidji State University.  Kamden Glade a graduate student at Bemidji State University was in charge of gathering the majority of the diet data.
Yellow Perch were the largest part of their diet that made up 65% by number and 8% by mass. Largemouth bass were fairly important and bullheads and of course white suckers.  Muskies tended to eat larger meals and infrequently.  They surveyed one muskrat, one ring-billed gull, 11 northern leopard frogs, two northern pike and a couple of bowfin in their stomachs.  A couple of muskies had 20” + white suckers in their stomachs.
In total only three walleyes were found in Muskies that made up less than 1.5% of the Muskies’ diet by number and less than 2% by mass.
Glade noted that Muskies weren’t targeting walleyes and that he was kind of surprised he didn’t see more as they often saw muskies and walleyes in the same areas that they were electro shocking sampling in.

The 2020 Minnesota Legislative Session is expected to reopen with a focus entirely on the COVID-19 crisis and getting the Minnesota economy back up and running as fast as possible.  We believe it highly unlikely and hope our legislators will not focus on anti-fishing/Muskie proposed bills such as Bill HF4005 which is similar to last years attempted bill to provide a moratorium on stocking in Otter Tail County and some other specific lakes and $50,000 for funding of a study by the U of M.
I need Members to join the Board or assist the Board helping out with our events, small projects and tasks, etc. The more hands the easier it is for everyone and the more we can do and the better we can serve our Members.  No amount of assistance is too small.  You will make some great new friends and have access to inside information on the on goings of the Chapter and those we are involved with at the MN DNR.   We promise that you will be safe!
