July 2013

From the President's Boat

Congratulations to the two NMMI Sectional Teams that participated in the State Tournament on Friday June 28th. We looked forward to even more Teams participating next year in our Sectional Qualifying Tournament. Please reach out to youth you know now to encourage them to plan for it next year.

We are pleased to announce due to popular demand that beginning in September our Monthly Members meetings are once again scheduled for the 3rd Tuesday of the month from September through May. We will soon begin our search for a wide variety of speakers so if you have ideas or suggestions please contact Robb Meyers, myself or any of the Board members.

It’s getting to be that time of year again when the water really heats up. As noted in the MI magazine this month, please be careful targeting, catching and releasing fish when temps increase to help prevent both catch and post release fish mortality. Sometimes it is better just not to fish at all in order to “Protect” our favorite Muskie resource at a very vulnerable time.

Don’t forget to register your fish and send in your photos for the Members only Contest and Photo Contest. Please submit all photos to Dan Mruz at DDmuskies@yahoo.com.

The North Metro Chapter is looking for a Chapter Secretary, Members Only Contest & Photo Contest Chair and Regional VP as all three positions were recently vacated by Eric Nelson and Bob Anderson who I once again thank for their years of service. All three positions do not take that much of a time commitment.

As I noted in my previous months President’s Letter, we are at a turning point where membership involvement will determine if the North Metro Chapter continues on like it has with little change or additional improvements, or if we need to cut back on events, meetings, etc., or if this Chapter should return to its founding roots as part of the original Muskies Inc Chapter. What do you expect from and want out your Chapter; something to think about over the summer prior to our September Members meeting.

Our Chapter’s purpose is:
To promote a high quality muskellunge sport fishery;
To support selected conservation practices based on scientific merit and carried out by authorized federal and state agencies;
To promote muskellunge research;
To introduce the species into suitable waters;
To support the abatement of water pollution;
To disseminate muskellunge information;
To promote good fellowship and sportsmanship among men, women and children;
To encourage and support youth involvement in muskellunge fishing for our future.

Please consider joining the North Metro Board or as an Event Chairperson or as a Volunteer. The Board meets for only two hours once a month September through June. You will have the ability not only to help influence the direction of the Chapter and help the Metro Muskie Fishery, but the chance to make some great new friends as well.

Please help me and the other Board Members make your Chapter a success and a model example for all of Muskies Inc. Contact me or any of the North Metro Board Members!

Happy fishing in 2013!

Dan Mruz
North Metro President

June Jam Tournament

Thanks to Our Generous Sponsors!

The June Jam Tournament was once again a success thanks to Steve Wernersbach who single handedly organizes this event every year. There were 74 entrants including 4 juniors and over $3,000 of prizes were given away including the Red Wing Lodge Grand Prize trip, $1,000 of Thorne Brothers Gift Certificates plus other Lure packages. This event would not be possible without the support of our great sponsors that are listed on our website.

Major sponsors this year are
Wilkins on Bone Lake, Thorne Bros, Red Wing Lodge, Fudally Tackle, Phantom Lures, Pro Label, and Wood’n Wildlife. Suick, Naze Baits and Nauti Lures joined as sponsors at the MN Muskie Expo in April.

August Red Wing Lodge Outing!

August 10-17, 2013

The 2013 Muskie Inc. Outing to Red Wing Lodge is coming up fast. Those signed up for this year’s trip will be contacted soon about cabin assignments. Let us know if you have suggestions for improving the trip.  We plan on the Sunday night after-dark bull session, especially helpful to those new to the Sabaskong Bay fishery.

If you are not part of this year’s trip, you may want to make some plans to be part of our group next summer.  Whether it will be your first Canada trip or whether it’s an extra fishing trip, the Red Wing Muskie Inc. outing continues to provide a fantastic fishing experience.  Red Wing Lodge is the eight-time Muskies Inc. Chapter Challunge Headquarters (in 1983, ’86, ’93, ’97, ’03,’04, and again in 2011 & 2012) and has logged in over 12,000 catch & release muskies.  And Muskie Inc. and Red Wing Lodge together: “It’s not their 1st rodeo.”   Red Wing Lodge has been family owned and operated for more than 45 years. The Bartlett family has hosted Muskies Inc. outings for years with personal and friendly service, so they understand what Muskie people need and like.  Check out the Muskie information, including the Red Wing Lodge Hall of Fame, as well as the first live cam in Morson, at www.redwinglodge.net.

Cost per person in housekeeping cabins will be $325 (US Funds) for 2013, which breaks down to just $46.43 per day for big-time Canadian muskie fishing.

Included in the full value of the 2013 Muskie Inc. trip:

  • Free Dockage ($72 value), Free Launch (both ways, $25 value)
  • Free Dinner one night, courtesy of the Bartletts
  • One Free Trip, given away in drawing, courtesy of the Bartletts
  • Free Wireless Internet Service throughout the Resort
  • Free Daily Bag of Ice; door prizes
Reservations require a $50 non-refundable deposit, made out to Red Wing Lodge. Deposits officially confirm reservation holds. First come, first served. Deposit funds are used to purchase materials for cabin improvements, for e.g., during last winter the Bartletts completed the installation of A/C units in all cabins.

MINNESOTA STATE HIGH SCHOOL MUSKY TOURNAMENT

The State Tournament was Friday, June 28 at Lake Alexander near Motley, MN. The North Metro Section Championship sent on the two winning (2 person) teams to participate:  Team 1 the Section winners North Branch Team made up of Jake Willing and Jeremy Wolfe and the Team 2 Elk River Team of Luke Lofquist and Joshua Haaf.

Congratulations to Jeremy Wolfe and Jake Willing of Team North Branch who took 3rd place with a 27 inch Northern Pike in the State High School Musky Tournament.

10 Teams qualified from across the State to participate in the State Tournament.

About 4:00am boats started to show up for the 5:30 am tournament start. The Teams from the North Metro Section showed early as well. Jeremy Wolfe and Jake Willing with parents from North Branch and Joshua Haaf and Luke Lofquist with Uncle Jason from Elk River quickly unloaded and were on the water ready to go by 5:15am.

The weather was cool with winds in the 15-20 mph range and boat control was an issue. A classic cold front had arrived overnight which might explain the fact that no Muskies were boated during the Tournament.

The awards ceremony was held at Castaway's restaurant on the north side of Lake Alexander. All teams received T-shirts commemorating their participation in the Tournament.

The winning fish were a pair of 33" Northern Pike caught by Teams from Apollo and Pierz High Schools which will share first place. The individual fisherman that caught the Northerns were given St. Croix rods for their efforts.  The third place North Branch Team received tackle boxes filled with Muskie baits.

Steve Earhart, Chad Davis, and Jim Kath from Brainerd Lakes MI, Mike Riha from North Metro MI, and Tom Keith from Twin Cities Chapter were the on the water Judges.  Tom Keith, Tournament Director did a wonderful job organizing this event.

We thank Mike Riha NMMI HS Musky Tournament Section Director for single handedly organizing the first North Metro Section Tournament, participating as a Judge and sending our first set of Teams to the State Tournament.
Armed Forces Family
Fishing Celebration

North Metro members participated with the Twin Cities Chapter on Friday June 21st and volunteered their boats and served as guides for military kids and soldiers in the Armed Forces Family Fishing Celebration sponsored by Fishing for Life Event at Lord Fletchers on Lake Minnetonka.  Our members support was much appreciated and all did a great job.  Congratulations to NMMI Member Brad Patterson who won the Guide Championship Award.  Brad guided the winners to the largest fish caught which was a 6.75 lb Northern Pike caught on a Husky Jerk on the inside weed and sand edge.
Thanks to Gary and Dave

Members Only Contest Rules & Awards

Registering Your Fish:
All fish must be entered on the Muskies Inc. website at www.muskiesinc.org .  Log into the Members Only section and click on the Lunge Log tab followed by the Fish Submission tab and complete the form.  (Make sure to only hit SUBMIT one time or they will reregister the same fish as many times as you hit the button.) All fish must be entered within 30 days of being caught to count in the contest.

Contest Period:
The contest runs from January 1, 2013 through December 1, 2013 for all legally caught fish.
All fish must be registered on the Muskies Inc. website by December 14th, 2013 to be eligible

Scoring:
4 points for a 30" Muskie and 1 point for each inch over 30".
Juniors Divisions:  Under Age 18
Adult Divisions:  Age 18 and over
Masters Division:  Any person that has won the women’s or men’s division in past years must enter their fish in the Master’s Division.

Division Prizes:
The top 3 places in each division will receive an award, except the Tiger Muskie division where only one award will be given to each of the 2 main divisions (Masters/Adults and Juniors).

Replicas:
We will be awarding a replica for the largest Muskie legally caught and released by an adult and one replica for the largest Muskie legally caught and released by a junior.  If the person with the largest fish has won a NMMI replica in the past, the replica will shift down to the person with the next largest fish that has not won a replica.
Winners are expected to display their winning mount in the North Metro Muskies, Inc. Booth at the Minnesota Muskie Expo.
"All winners are subject to a polygraph test and/or an affidavit attesting to their entry at the Board's discretion."

Patches and Individual & Annual Certificates:
When entering a fish on the Muskies Inc. website you have the option to receive Release Patches and Individual Release Certificates for each fish you catch.  There is also a check box for Annual Release Certificates for your yearly fish total.  Due to the past confusion of these check boxes and the number of times they are accidentally checked, we ask that you email in a request at the end of the season for certificates and patches by December 14, 2013.  Contact Dan Mruz at DDmuskies@yahoo.com at the end of each season with your request.  Also, all patches, certificates and division awards must be picked up at the annual banquet or one of the general meetings.  Patches, certificates and awards will not be mailed.

Members Photo Contest:
There will be two winners for this contest, one adult and one junior.  The photo must be either taken by a North Metro Muskies Inc. member or is of a Chapter member.  The adult contest will be a random drawing of all photos.  This winner will receive a new Muskie rod.  For the junior division, our board will determine the top five junior photos of the year.  We will post these photos on the website for the membership to vote for a final winner.  The winner will receive a 24x36 inch Franz Reprographics custom print of their photo.  Please submit all photos to Dan Mruz at DDmuskies@yahoo.com.  Franz Reprographics recommends using a 3.0 megapixel digital camera or better.  Both winners will be announced at the 2014 Annual Banquet.

Thanks to Gary and Dave

North Metro Muskie League

That sunshine is getting warm. Can muskie fishing be far away? I hope that you are looking forward to fishing in the North Metro Muskie league this summer. It is a great way to get out fishing and meet other North Metro members. Best of all, it is free!

At the suggestion of last year’s participants, I made some changes for 2013. We added Rush Lake to our lineup. We also added a couple Saturday morning events. The Saturday morning events are scheduled for early morning so that we can fish at the peak time of sunrise and avoid the usual weekend heavy boat traffic of metro lakes. We will also try to have PIT tag readers available for some league events. Bald Eagle, White Bear, and Minnetonka have muskies with PIT tags.

Tuesday June 5th Bald Eagle Lake 5:00pm – 9:30pm
Tuesday June 12th Rush Lake 5:00pm – 9:30pm
Saturday June 15th Bald Eagle Lake 5:00am – 10:00am
Tuesday June 18th Forest Lake 5:00pm – 9:30pm
Tuesday June 25th White Bear Lake 5:00pm – 9:30pm
Tuesday July 2nd Lake Minnetonka 5:00pm – 9:30pm
Tuesday August 6th White Bear Lake 5:00pm – 9:00pm
Tuesday August 13th Lake Independence 5:00pm – 9:00pm
Tuesday August 20th Forest Lake 5:00pm – 9:00pm
Saturday August 24th White Bear Lake 5:30am – 10:30am
Tuesday August 27th Bald eagle Lake 5:00pm – 9:00pm

Scoring

4 points for a 30" muskie and 1 point for each inch over 30". This is the same as the member’s only contest.

This is an “on your honor” league. We do not rely on witnesses, photographs, or any other sort of verification of the fish caught. It is up to you to accurately measure and report your fish.

3 points per event fished.
2 points will be awarded for fishing with a new partner during each league event.
4 points if your partner is a new member in 2013.

Partners do not have to be members. Each partner only counts one time during the league. You may only count one partner per event. You may fish 3 people in a boat.

To be awarded points, you will need to report the events fished within 1 week. You must E-Mail me at Kriskokoran@gmail.comThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . I will need to know your name, the lake fished, and your partner’s name. Please let me know if your partner is new member in 2013 or if they are a non-member.

No ties will be allowed. The winner of a tie will be determined by the League Director using the following criteria; most fish points, biggest fish, biggest fish caught first, most partner points, and finally a coin toss. I will post the standings on the www.nmmuskies.com message board.

Prizes
• 1st place Chapter jacket
• 2nd place Chapter hooded sweatshirt
• 3rd Place Chapter T-shirt
• 4th Place Chapter hat
• 5th Place Chapter hat

Please contact me if you have any questions. Good luck to all this coming season.
