September 2015

From the President's Boat

Fall is here and not only is it prime fishing time it is also time for our monthly members meetings to start up again.  We have lined up all of our speakers for the year and will publish them in the upcoming newsletter.  We meet the third Tuesday of the month at the Coon Rapids VFW, all meetings are open to the general public and we welcome all guests.

Members have released 356 MOC logged fish as of August 26th with the largest being 53” fish released by Dave Selle.  Plenty of large 50”+ fish are being reported in the metro area and there is still three months of high quality fishing time left to catch and release that trophy of a lifetime.  Make sure you send in your photos to the NMMI Editor Robb Meyers or me, so we can share them with the rest of members.

Getting youth involved in our sport is very important to the future of our Chapter and MI.  With great fall fishing here, now is a great time to introduce some kids to Muskie fishing and all the benefits it provides.

The 2015 Gil Hamm Chapter Challunge was August 26th – 28th on Leech Lake and congratulations to the Star of the North Chapter winners of the event five of the last seven years.  http://gilhamm.com/  The North Metro did not field a team this year but we hope to compete next year to give them some real competition.

A few members have been stepped up to help the Board but we still need more members to consider joining or helping.  Every Member can help in their own way.

Your President will be calling on all members for their much needed assistance with putting on our annual Banquet in February and for the 50th Anniversary of Muskies Inc. Celebration that we are putting on in March in partnership with the Twin Cities Chapter.  Let’s celebrate the success of the national and metro Muskie fisheries which would never have been possible without MI and local Chapters like the North Metro and the lasting memories, friendships and camaraderie that it has fostered in the process.  I need you! Please contact me or any Board Member if you can help.

Metro-area Muskies Benefit from George Wahl Tournament

The George Wahl Memorial Muskie Tournament is unique in that every penny made by the event goes toward the metro-area muskie fishery. The tournament is scheduled for Saturday, September 26 on 12 metro-area lakes: Minnetonka, Independence, Waconia, Eagle Lake (Henn. Cty.) White Bear, Bald Eagle, Forest, St. Croix (downstream of the Hwy 64 bridge in Stillwater to the Hwy 10 bridge in Prescott), Harriet, Calhoun, Cedar and Lake of the Isles.

The tournament was conceived as a way to honor George Wahl, long-time chapter member, an avid muskie angler and inventor of the Eagle Tail – one of the most popular muskie baits ever. We wanted to have a friendly competition for metro-area muskie anglers.

The George Wahl tournament follows the Catch-Photo-Release format. When you catch a fish, take a photo - being sure to include Saturday’s paper somewhere in the photo - and release it safely. Then, call in the information to tournament headquarters. Photo of the fish must be downloaded to complete the process. Tournament hours are from 7 am to 6 pm.

Tournament headquarters and the Awards program will be at Thorne Bros. A pork chop banquet for all contestants will be held prior to the program. There will be raffles and other opportunities to win items to take home.

Tournament standings are figured on a point system. Prizes, including a Thorne Bros. Gift Certificate and a commemorative Phantom are awarded through 10th place. The first 5 places also win $500, $400, $300, $200, $100. Grand Prize is a trip for 4 to Whitefish Bay Camp on Lake of the Woods and $1000. Every person who registers a muskie is eligible for the drawing.

Register for the George Wahl tournament in person at Joe’s, Blue Ribbon (both locations) and Thorne’s through Friday, September 25. You can also register on line at our chapter website: www.twincitiesmuskiesinc.org through September 20. Entry for the tournament is $50, a small price to pay to ensure that the quality of our local fishery will continue for years to come. If you’ve ever fished for muskies in a metro-area lake, do your part for this fishery.

Muskies Inc Celebrates 50 Years

Muskies Inc. will be 50 years old in 2016. A 50 year Anniversary Banquet is planned for March 12, 2016 as part of the celebration. Muskies Inc. members from throughout the country are expected to attend.
The 50th Anniversary Banquet will be held in conjunction with the 2016 annual meeting as well as a 3-day scientific symposium on muskellunge.

An event the size of the banquet will take many volunteers to make it happen. Currently there is an oversight committee in place with members from each of the chapters taking part. As plans are developed, they will be asking for help with the planning and for volunteers the day of the event.
Volunteers are needed to help with planning the dinner, sponsorship and donations, games/silent auction/raffles, merchandise sales, media/advertising.

2015 June Jam Muskie Tournament Results

By Steve Wernersbach

The weather for this year’s June Jam was challenging. Early Saturday morning saw heavy rains and winds but gave way to calmer, nicer conditions in the afternoon and evening. Sunday saw calm flat water and clear skies, tough conditions one would think.

Only 15 fish were caught, about half the number we normally register. 75 anglers entered with fish caught by 13 of them. 11 of the fish were caught on Saturday and four on Sunday.  Catch times were interesting. On Saturday fish were caught at 8:30, 9:35 and 11 AM and 1:15, 1:40, 1:45 4, 6:30, 7, 8:15 and 9 PM. The Sunday catch times were 9, 10, 11:20 and 11:40 AM.  A small catch window 1 to 2 PM on Saturday and 10 to Noon on Sunday.

Totals for each lake were:
* Apple River Flowage 3
* Wapogasset 2
* Bone Lake 4
* Deer Lake 1
* Bear Trap 4
* Cedar Lake 1

Big fish was caught by Aaron Flueger, a 44.5 inch from Bone Lake.
Winners were:
1st   Aaron Flueger – 35.5 & 44.5 Bone Lake (Big Fish)
2nd   Ray Quint – 39.5 & 34.5 Bear Trap

Hope to see everyone again next year.

Major sponsors this year are Red Wing Lodge, Fudally Tackle, Phantom Lures, Pro Label, and Wood’n Wildlife.
1st Place Winner Aaron Flueger – 35.5 & 44.5 Bone Lake

Next Meeting September 15

Thorne Bros. Pro Staff Member and muskie guide, Andy Hamm with be here at 6: muskie seminar, titled "Total Timing"! Andy will be here discussing timing....From time of year to time of day to timing each cast and the figure 8. Timing is everything.

Check out Andy's YouTube video.

Andy Hamm has been passionately hunting muskies for over 10 years. During that time he’s competed in and finished in the top 10 in many pro tournaments and landed a lot of giant muskies. He receives the most joy from passing on the fishing knowledge and technical insight to others and, most importantly, watching people catch the fish of their dreams.
Lake Minnetonka is his home water, but he guides elsewhere if the fish or the clients demand it.

Please join us at our general meetings the 3rd Tuesday of each month, Sept. through May. Each month we have a speaker come in and the topics vary from local metro area tactics to the basics of reel cleaning. We also have a rod and reel raffle and lure raffle. You DO NOT need to be a member to attend our general meetings.
When: 3rd Tuesday of the month 7pm–9pm
Where: Coon Rapids VFW - 1919 Coon Rapids Blvd NW

Red Wing Outing Reels in Big Time Numbers

During a week of largely sunny skies and little wind, 28 fishermen exhibited why it is that Red Wing Lodge has been chosen nine different times to be the headquarters for the Muskie Inc. Chapter Challenge.  During the annual outing on August 8-15, 87 muskies were caught and released by members of the North Metro and Twin Cities chapters of Muskie Inc.  Eleven of the muskies were 47” or larger, of those eleven fish four muskies were 48” or larger.  Tom Keith took big fish honors with a 48.5” muskie.  Tom will have his name engraved on the Big Fish plaque.

In addition to these 87 muskies, fishermen in camp who were not part of our Muskie Inc. outing caught another 41 muskies, bringing the combined catch in camp to a total of 128 for the week of August 8-14.  Over the seven days this brings the average # of muskies caught and released to 18.3 fish per day.  These numbers are a testament to the resource as well as to the determination and expertise of Red Wing guests.  A special thanks to Alex Worobel, Andy McClure, and Larry Proskin for stepping up with the Muskie Inc. spirit and taking on extra fishermen who experienced boat problems.

Mike and Anne Bartlett, along with daughters Molly and Kate, went all out again, as is their practice, preparing for and hosting Muskie Inc. fishermen, again exhibiting the fun and solid service with which the family has built and maintained its outstanding reputation in the business.

As always, stories, jokes and good-natured ribbing were enjoyed by all, but the stats on these were not officially recorded. Keep an eye out for the detailed fall invitation that will officially begin the sign-up period for the 2016 Red Wing outing.  Dates for the 2016 outing will be August 6-13.

Working to Preserve, Promote and Advance Muskie and Pike Education and Research in Minnesota

From John Underhill and Aaron Meyer, MMPA Co-chairs

We hope the summer and the fish are being kind to you all. As some may know we have been working on the Pike problem in this state for over 20 years. Dave Overland and Frank Schneider Jr. both questioned “How many Pike are eating our Walleye stock.” Dave called the Advanced Walleye Stocking program “the Advanced Northern Pike Feeding Program.” He questioned the flaws in “Just stocking bigger or more Walleyes” from the start, but there was strong support amongst some big names that saw that policy as the answer. I was told by Dave that this would be the biggest fight of our existence because Pike interests and Walleye interests don’t want to change; now we’re all seeing the problem.

After a few decades of the program’s existence we can see there is strong scientific support for Dave and Franks assumptions. Several other groups as well as ours have taken up the cause along with the DNR. Last legislative session Anglers for Habitat had an informational meeting with the Senate on the subject; and this year we are hoping for a resolution from Minnesota Conservation Federation and even more support to get this new 3 Zone Pike regulation passed and put into the regulations. Below is a link to the DNR Page.

Proposed Pike Regs

Big news this month... At the latest Esox Workshop the DNR announced that six lakes will posted as candidates for possible Muskie stocking. This doesn't mean decisions have been made on these lakes. In fact, this is just the first step in the process of making the decisions. What it means is that these are lakes the DNR considers good candidates. The notices will be posted for 90 days, and then public meetings will be held to share information and collect public input. Those meetings will be held in November and December. If any of the lakes are selected for stocking, the first fingerlings would be stocked in the fall of 2016.

The lakes to be posted are: Franklin, Lizzie, and Loon, all in Ottertail County. Gull Lake near Brainerd The Fairmont Chain in southern Minnesota and Big Marine in the East Metro We will need to work hard to support these proposals and hope to get several of these lakes stocked. It will require a large effort by the Muskie angling public to provide positive input and support. Stay tuned for more information.

The DNR's Muskie Technical Committee has reviewed and revised the Muskie stocking program statewide. The main goal is to create more consistency in the stocking efforts. In some cases, lakes will be stocked every year, rather than every other. Overall stocking rates won't change significantly but they'll be able to better assess what works and what doesn't, along with making it easier to reach annual stocking quotas. They've also ranked all the Muskie lakes in order of priority so that in low production years our most important lakes are sure to still get stocked.

Lastly, any new lakes stocked in the future will be stocked at lower initial quotas to see if stocking fewer fish creates smaller initial year classes. This might ultimately keep these lakes from having population spikes followed by significant lows, as has been common in many of our stocked lakes. All Muskies in newly stocked waters will be PIT tagged to assist in study and management.

Thanks to our special friends that helped make our 2015 10th Annual North Metro Muskies, Inc. Banquet a success.

North Metro Muskie League 2015

Guy's and Gal's

What a fantastic league we had this year. 58 different people fished an event. 29 people fished 2 or more events.

We had 17 muskies caught including a nice tiger in the league.

Stay tuned for a more polished write up on the league and when we will offer up the prizes and trophy.

Congrats to Mike Watzl he caught a 41.5" fish on the last night to add to his point total. He even had 50" class fish jumping over his bucktail on the river.

Thank you everyone for participating in our league and if you were a guest of a member consider joining the North Metro Muskies Inc. chapter.
