Poolside Demo May 20th

Sheraton Minneapolis West Hotel in Minnetonka next to Ridgedale

Don’t miss this month’s Pool Side Lure Demo by Brett Erickson of Thorne Brothers, May 20th:  7:00 â€“ 8:30 pm at the Sheraton Minneapolis West Hotel 12201 Ridgedale Drive; Minnetonka (Just off I-394) instead of normal monthly meeting.

Brett Erickson will bring some of the new rods, reels along with the baits and people can throw, and he'll talk about what they are doing. New stuff is cool, especially with all the new rods and reels this year.
Brett will also demonstrate how to present lures that are new to the muskie world, as well as some old favorites.  See topwaters, jerkbaits, bucktails, spinnerbaits, gliders, crankbaits, swim baits, and others that shake, rattle and troll!  You will get tips on enticing that monster muskie to eat your bait and make your year more successful!

Brett has been fishing since the age of 4 and has fished all the Midwest. He is also a successful tournament angler where he's fished in muskie tournaments across the Midwest as well. Approximately 33 years ago Brett began fishing muskies in Canada and now spends most of his time there are either Muskie Bay Resort or Moosehorn Lodge. Brett is on the Pro Staff with Ranger Boats and Evinrude Outboards.

We thank the Sheraton Minneapolis West Hotel for the use of their pool, which should allow members to circle the pool to see the lures.

From the President's Boat

June will be a busy month with the opening of the Minnesota Muskie season and the large number of worthwhile events such as the NMMI Members Picnic, JuneJam Tournament, Arms Forces Family Fishing Day, State High School Qualifiers and more. The new and improved North Metro League Night is just a short month away and kicks off June 3rd on the St. Croix River. The Metro Muskie Tournament is June 14 Www.metromuskietournament.com so make your plans to participate in this valuable cause and the other June activities.

The Hugh C. Becker Foundation Grant purchases have been made and the DNR has asked the North Metro Chapter to help catch 10 Muskies on the St Croix River to implant with the ten radio transmitters. We are working out the details and the date to increase the chances of success and will try to involve as many members as possible in this fantastic exercise with the DNR.

Any day we expect to receive the three PIT Readers for our Chapter Members to use on League Nights, NMMI & TC Chapter outings, other events and individually to check caught fish for electronic tags and capture data for the ongoing DNR TC Metro Tagging study. We hope to demonstrate how to use the Readers at the North Metro Lure demo May 20th at the Minneapolis Sheraton next to Ridgedale. They also have a very large pool and open atrium that should make it easy for all to see Brett Erickson of Thorne Brothers demo lures.

A number of members have stepped up and joined the Board and the additional manpower has benefitted everyone in the Chapter. We could still use help to plan the NMMI Members Challunge Tournament. Contact any of the North Metro Board Members if you can assist us!

Print Your Member ID Cards

A new system has been implemented by Muskies Inc. that allows members to print their own Muskies Inc. ID cards at any time from the muskiesinc.org website. This new process will save dollars in monthly expenditures for the imprinting and managing of ID cards over the previous method.

To utilize this new process, log in to the Muskies Inc. website muskiesinc.org using the Member Login button on the left of the home page. Once you have logged in, click on the profile update button. In the upper right corner of the profile, there is a link that you can click and print your card. For family members, the family head can print the IDs for the entire family.

Members who do not have access to computers or are unable to print their own ID cards should contact the MI Secretary to have them produced and mailed to them.

Registration is open for the 2014 June Jam.  This is a two-day fun tournament on Polk County lakes.  If you fish Deer, Bone and the Apple River Flowage, you will really enjoy this tournament.  Eight lakes in Polk County Wisconsin can be fished. If you fished it in the past but not lately, consider giving it another chance.  The new 40" limits in Wisconsin are working.  Some nice size fish are showing up. We should be due for some nice weather this year as well.  Hope to see you there.

Entry is now open for this year’s June Jam tournament. Tournament dates this year are: Pre-tournament sign in Friday June 20th at Wilkins Bar and Resort on Bone Lake in Luck, WI; fishing hours 5AM to 9PM Saturday and 5AM to Noon Sunday, June 21st and 22nd with the awards ceremony at Wilkins starting at 1PM on Sunday. Those of you that have fished the tournament know how much fun it can be. The two-day format is different from most tournaments and adds a lot to the experience.

This year’s June Jam flyer, rules and entry forms are available by emailing Steve at swernersbach@gmail.com. Major sponsors this year are Thorne Bros, Red Wing Lodge, Fudally Tackle, Phantom Lures, Pro Label, and Wood’n Wildlife. Suick and Muskie Mafia. I’ll be hoping to hear from you.
Long time North Metro Member Merv Heitschmidt, of Braham, died on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at home. He was 72 years old. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at the Braham Evangelical Covenant Church. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 from 4-7 pm at the Church and also 1 hr. prior to the service on Thursday all at the church.

He was born March 22, 1942 in Holyrood, KS. In 1957 his family moved to Cass Lake MN where they purchased Birch Villa Resort.  In 1968 Merv and his wife Jan moved to Braham, MN where he continued his teaching/coaching career. Summers were spent at Cass Lake where Merv worked as a fishing guide. In 1979, Merv took a leave of absence from teaching and purchased a bait shop in Hayward, WI. After three years the family returned to Braham and Merv resumed his teaching and coaching career until his retirement in 2002.

He was an avid sportsman, wrote a book titled “Netting Reel Memories” about his experiences at Cass Lake, and enjoyed teaching rod building for many years.

Annual Red Wing Outing Coming into View!

1 Spot Open

The 2014 Outing to Red Wing Lodge is getting closer! Dates for 2014: 8/9-16. Those signed up for this year’s trip: Let us know if you have suggestions for improving our Muskie Inc. outing.  We will continue the Sunday night after-dark bull session, especially helpful to those who are new to the Sabaskong Bay fishery. [One opening for the 2014 outing is still available.  If interested, call Pat or John immediately.]

Red Wing Lodge on Sabaskong Bay is an amazing destination.  Red Wing is the eight-time Muskies Inc. Chapter Challunge Headquarters (in 1983, ’86, ’93, ’97, ’03,’04, and again in 2011 & 2012) and has logged in over 12,000 catch & release muskies.  So Muskie Inc. and Red Wing Lodge together: “It’s not their first rodeo.”

When hunting muskies on Canadian shield water, surprises at base camp can cut down on valuable fishing time.  Red Wing Lodge offers a resort base that has been family owned and operated for more than 40 years and is clean and comfortable, where everything works. The Bartlett family has hosted Muskies Inc. outings for years with personal and friendly service, so they understand what Muskie people need and like.  Check out the Muskie information, including the Red Wing Lodge Hall of Fame, as well as the first live cam in Morson, at www.redwinglodge.net.

Reservations require a $50 non-refundable deposit, made out to Red Wing Lodge. Cost per person in housekeeping cabins will be $325 (US Funds) for 2013, which breaks down to just $46.43 per day for big-time Canadian Muskie fishing. Included in the full value of the 2013 Muskie Inc. trip:

Cost per person in housekeeping cabins will remain at $325 (US Funds) for 2014, which breaks down to just $46.43 per day for big-time Canadian muskie fishing.
