From the Superintendent

Dear Ferndale Family,

On Thursday, the State Superintendent of Michigan, Dr. Michael Rice visited Ferndale Public Schools. Dr. Rice spent time visiting Ferndale Upper Elementary and Ferndale High/Middle School where he connected with students and staff. He started his day at Ferndale Upper Elementary where he visited two classrooms. In Mrs. Prince's classroom Dr. Rice sat in on their morning routine and saw some of our Social Emotional Curriculum at work (to learn more about SEL click the link ----please insert link to sel page). Dr. Rice then visited Mrs. Lusk's class where he read to the students and talked to them about their future plans. After departing FUEL Dr. Rice visited Ferndale High School where he met with students from FHS and University High School where they discussed a wide variety of topics from Early Release Wednesday to standardized testing.

What a great week for Ferndale!  Don't forget tomorrow, Saturday, February 1st, is the All City Concert! I hope to see you there.

In Education,

Dania H. Bazzi, PhD

From the State Superintendent

Dear Ferndale Family,

Whether you are a member of the education community, or an individual passionate about education, together we can build a strong education system for Michigan's children. The Top 10 in 10 Strategic Education Plan is the state’s plan to drive improvement in the education system for Michigan’s children. The current plan has been in place since February 2016.

As is good practice, a strategic plan should be evaluated periodically. Over the past few months, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) Top 10 review team has been working to review and update the current plan. Based on recent interviews with State Board of Education members, education stakeholders and partners, tribal partners, and MDE staff, potential goals were identified and are included in a survey.

We value your input. What goals do you believe should be part of Michigan's education strategic plan?

Please fill out the survey completely. The survey will close at 11:59 p.m. on February 7, 2020. Thank you for your time and commitment to Michigan's children.

Michael F. Rice, PhD

State Superintendent

PALs Get Together at Friendship Circle

On Tuesday, Positively Awesome Leaders (PALs) attended a field trip to Friendship Circle with Positively Awesome Learners (PALs) from Mrs. Williams's class. Our PALs program is designed to facilitate play and connections between students with neurological differences (students with Autism or other Intellectual disabilities) and their neuro-typical peers. Oftentimes Autism can make friendships a challenge therefore social activities and structured games are planned to help make interactions the most accessible and fun.

Friendship Circle is a facility that offers a simulated village with many life skills opportunities. Students were given a menu and a clipboard. The menu had visuals so any student could select activities. Together the Leader and Learner opened a checking account, went shopping at a convenience store, rode bikes while observing traffic signals, and even learned to use a medical card at a doctors office. FUEL is currently recognizing Kindness week and this trip was the perfect reminder that the best way to show kindness is to include everyone. Ferndale Artists Excel

This week, Elliot Handyside and Robert Dockery took first and second place in VSN of Michigan's photography contest and won cash prizes! Congratulations, artists!

Additionally, FHS students competed in the Scholastic Art Awards for Oakland County, up against over 5000 submitted art works and came out better than last year.
