From the Superintendent

Dear Ferndale Family,

As we prepare to celebrate the holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I wanted to take a moment to remember and honor his lasting legacy.

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”-Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I will always admire him for persisting; he demanded for social change and had the ability to speak to the hearts of many, while energizing the movement for equality.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. not only dedicated his life to ensure the dream of freedom, equity, peace, and social justice, he sacrificed his life to ensure life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all people. At Ferndale Public Schools, we are committed to advancing his dream and ensuring equitable access for all students and we thank our community for the work you do to help.

On Monday, January 20th, the Charter Township of Royal Oak will be holding a celebration to honor Martin Luther King Jr. The Ferndale High School Dance team will also be performing. The event will take place at the Recreation Center (21272 Mendota, Ferndale, MI 48220). We hope to see you there.

Kindergarten Open House is Tuesday, February 4th from 6:30 - 7:30 pm. Click for Details.

Peace Walk 2020

On Thursday, January 16th Ferndale Lower Elementary Schools held their annual Peace Walk. The Peace Walk began back in 2004 as part of the elementary schools’ work in creating a solid school family.

“Teaching our youngest children about the work that Dr. Martin Luther King did in a developmentally appropriate way is so important. We felt that  if we had children share their thoughts about peace, getting along, understanding, and having a dream to make a difference - we could share that with others.

We begin teaching about Dr. King through quality literature in the classrooms. The students then learn about his work and the focus on peace, positive intent, and goodwill through songs taught in their music classes. To support children’s understanding of getting along, promoting diversity and understanding, each classroom decides on what they will do during the peace walk,” said Ferndale Schools Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Mrs. Dina Rocheleau.
