Patrol News

Handheld Radios

Our handheld radios are a key essential asset for safe beach operation. Several morning patrols are being caught short with non-charged, non-functioning radios.
More recently the radios are not being placed correctly into their charging cradle.
Can all patrols please ensure the radios are securely seated in the cradle, the cradle light will turn solid when charging.
If the charging LED blinks, the radio is not seated correctly. Please make an effort to check radios into the cradle at the end of the day. Thank you.

Bluebottles

We've seen several weeks of north easterly winds bringing high volumes of bluebottles to Sydney's Beaches. There have been frequent visits to the patrol tent for support. If you get stung, stay calm and seek help from the patrol.

Some tips from SLSA on treating the stings:

Wash off any remaining tentacles with seawater, or pick off with your fingers (they can’t usually sting through the tough skin on your fingers!)
Immerse the patient’s sting in hot water (no hotter than can be easily tolerated)
If local pain is not relieved or immersion facilities are not available, the application of cold packs or wrapped ice is also effective.

Training News....

Advanced Resuscitation Techniques course ..
We will be running an Advanced Resuscitation Techniques course with Avalon SLSC in the future. Advanced resuscitation skills are a great compliment to the bronze medallion and make you even more of an asset to your surf life saving patrol. Alternatively, if you do not have a Bronze Medallion and don't want to take on the wet stuff, you can be part of a patrol with an ART award without needing a Bronze Medallion. Under the current changes to patrol operations, ART award holders are the only members permitted to handle oxygen in emergency incidents.

Our latest group of Bronzies, twenty in total, are closing in on their assessment. Some of the group are in the final stages of what's been a more than 12 month process. Firstly covid saw the course they had almost finished postponed, and then a change in the course curriculum meant having to start the journey again. Huge props for those who've gone the distance. And for the SRC's moving on to their Bronze and for our total newbies, a huge congrats to them for the effort and time involved, all to get them on the beach and patrolling for our community. It's a wonderful course and super rewarding - make sure to do it next season if you haven't already.

Junior News...
The rain held off but the water conditions were extremely sketchy for our last round of Club Champs. A big thankyou to all Age Managers, Cadets, Patrol 14 led by Romilly Madew, IRB - David Madew and our amazing Water Safety Officer, John Coleman for helping guide our Nippers through!
BBQ
This cannot be run without the assistance of parents each week. A roster system is in place (in current calendar) for parents required in each age group. Ideally, we have a keen and able BBQ'er leader to help us run this each week, and all enquiries in this respect can be directed to juniors.admin@bilgolaslsc.org.au.
This week it is U7 parents for 1st session and U11s for second session.
PLEASE help support our club with our No.1 Fund Raising and keep our much loved Sangers alive. We require at least 3 per session. You should have received notification from the above Age Group AMs for your assistance.
Otherwise you can sign up for assistance on the following link - even if not the nominated age group, and has slots for the next 4-5 weeks!

Please save the date for our Presentation day that is currently scheduled for Saturday, 27th March at 4pm. For those that are new, it's a chance to celebrate all our Nippers achievements for the year and award our Club Champs and various other fabulous Nipper awards/contributions. We hope to have our special Spit/BBQ and other entertainment after the presentation. Please look out for correspondence re - as it most likely will be a book for place and also will be subject to current COVID conditions.
We are still urgently seeking assistance in running our Uniform shop/online store. For more detail, please contact me on juniors.chairman@bilgolaslsc.org.au.

A Bilgola Surf Club Family Swimming to support Mens Mental Health

Ruby and Ben Drew are swimming in the 'Head Above Water 24 Hour Swim' on the 20th of March and they need our support.

Ruby has kickstarted 2021 with some amazing achievements. After very recently completing her SRC late last year, jumping straight into doing her Bronze Mediation and has been a regular water safety supporting member for the Sunday. It’s safe to say that Ruby has been one of many young super stars contributing a large amount of time with us training to become a patrol member at the Bilgola Surf Club training, we congratulate all your hard work!

However while these accolades alone are worth a standing ovation, Ruby continues to impress by supporting her father Ben Ruby by contributing her time to swim laps in the Head Above Water 24 Hour Swim. As one of age managers with the Nipper program, Ben is involved with a great local group called Meditation For Men and together they are raising money in support of mental health for men by swimming for 24 hours straight, at the Collaroy pool on the 20th of March.

Our community has no doubt experienced some hardships in the last 12 months and as a family first surf club, supporting our club members is a great way to support each other and donating what you can will make Ruby and Bens swim something to remember.
