APRIL 2020

PIXELACHE HELSINKI NEWSLETTER

Here at Pixelache Helsinki, we are still re-assessing and re-hashing the #BURN____ Spring Programme. This month we are continuing with the virtual Tea Parties, to which we added streaming through Twitch and, as usual, continuing with the streaming of Meanwhile in an Abandoned Warehouse with Episode 039 and Episode 040. On top of the now regular on-line monthly activities, we are currently preparing to release our #BURN____ Open Call and invite you to future activities, namely, the project Bunkers.

BUNKERS

The project Bunkers is part of the programme during the Senses of Sustenance II art event in Seinäjoen taidehalli. The project is facilitated by Pixelache Helsinki members Mari Keski-Korsu and Alan Bulfin. Bunkers is a series of interviews about care for the environment in the cities and how art and green care psychology combine to create new paths of thinking and forms of public care. This is explored through the concept of embodiment and is also why the bunkers are used.

Due to changes as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, Senses of Sustenance II and Bunkers will be presented together and broadcasted over three consecutive days. Locations are Alajoen perinnealue Ilmajoki and Upankatu 3 bunker in Seinäjoki.

The participating artists will cast a live broadcast from their homes in Helsinki and in Bristol, UK, lasting every day for two hours. The broadcast will be available through a link that is seen from Seinäjoen Taidehalli's Facebook page and website, on top of the Pixelache Helsinki website and Facebook page. The event will be held in English and partly in Finnish.

MEANWHILE IN AN ABANDONED WAREHOUSE

As every month, the Meanwhile in an Abandoned Warehouse team released two new episodes, Episode 039 and Episode 040. In the latter episode, titled 'Radio Miaaw - the sounds of the commons', Owen Kelly looks at the range of music currently available under a creative commons licence.

He looks at some artist-released music as well as songs available through the Free Music Archive, Jamendo and Tribe of Noise. We pass through a varied landscape that includes modern pop, country, Indian jazz, folk and North African music. There is more to this than meets the ear.

REVISIT EPISODE 009 AND 013

In these times of social distancing, we also recommend revisiting Episode 009 titled Autobiography and culture politics in which Sophie Hope and Jonathan Gross discuss the relationship between autobiography and cultural action, and the needs to explore memory and history as a means of making sense of one’s own cultural politics.

Amongst others, you can also re-listen to Episode 013, titled From participatory arts to cultural democracy in which the community artist François Matarasso continues the conversation with Owen Kelly and Sophie Hope that began in Episode 012. They look at how participatory art sometimes has cultural democracy as its aim, and ask what cultural democracy might mean in this context.
