Europe Day is here!

As in every May, this year's has much in store for you as well.
The month will kick of with a plethora of official events related to the Europe Day on both May 4 and May 9, accompanied by a vibrant set of activities by the local sections.
The rest of May is equally peppered with domestic and international seminars, conferences and other events that you simply don't want to miss.

If you want to partake in the Europe Day activities and make your day even more eventful, read through the descriptions below or write to us and we will point you in the right direction.


Café Europa: Schengen - Fortress of Freedom?

April 30

JEF Leuven invites you to take your chance to speed-date with a Euro professional on internal and external migration. What would our lives look like with borders all around us? Can you even imagine? For non-Europeans it is an everyday reality... How do you feel about this? Come to our Café Europa, and share your ideas with:

- Professor Ching Lin Pang (Interculturalism, Migration and Minorities Research Centre, KU Leuven)
- Daphné Dumery (N-VA - Member of the Federal Parliament, Commission European Affairs and Naturalizations)

JEF Brussels Apéro Vol. VI: Europe Day Starts HERE!

Right before the Europe Day, JEF Brussels warmly welcomes you to a special edition of its monthly apéro!
 
This month, our apéro will be all about the Europe Day.

Do you know about all your options for May 4 events? There's plenty!
Do you want to volunteer for an activity? We'll hook you up with the right people!
Are you already participating in the activities? Come share the excitement for what's in store the next day!
Are you just after having a good time? Challenge accepted!

As always, the JEF Brussels apéro is the perfect opportunity to come and meet fellow JEFers in a cozy and fun atmosphere, so make sure to be there!
Everyone is welcome at our apéro events so feel free to bring along your friends and colleagues.

EUROPE DAY EVENTS
May 4

Europe Day is here at last! A great number of free activities will be unfolding so plan ahead well, you'll have much to do and see:

The European Parliament and all other European institutions will open their doors to the citizens, offering free entry and entertainment for all age groups.

Take a look at the full Parliament programme and the Commission and see where you can take your friends and grandparents on Saturday to show them the EU in action!


Volunteering = Europe x Fun²
If you want to make your day way more fun and more meaningful, join the youngsters of JEF Belgium and the European Movement Belgium in organizing activities on the esplanade in front of the European Parliament. Come and join us for the whole day or for a few hours. If you have rollerblades, bring them along as well.
Our programme will consists of a real European quiz, playing games and raising awareness of the EU throughout the day!

There's more: All the volunteers will receive travel costs reimbursement and a free lunch!

Citizen Dialogue Brussels

May 4

In case you have not registered yet, don't forget: let your opinion be heard! 
The citizen dialogue will discuss the following: What kind of Europe do we live in and where do we want the European project to take us? What are your rights as a citizen of the European Union? How do we shape Europe’s future?

Join the 
debate on the future of Europe with Viviane Reding, Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for Justice, Fundamental rights and Citizenship.
Introduction by Charles Picqué, Minister-President of the Government of the Brussels Capital-Region.

JEF Gent: Muzen van Europa: Kathleen Van Brempt

De Jonge Europese Federalisten Gent organiseren naar jaarlijkse traditie De Muzen van Europa. Op deze avond wordt een prominente vrouw uit de Europese politiek uitgenodigd om mee op café te gaan en een gesprek aan te gaan met studenten over Europese politiek. Dit jaar hebben zij de eer Kathleen Van Brempt te ontvangen.

Zij houden de groep beperkt zodat zij in informele sfeer een gesprek kunnen aangaan met de Muze. Inschrijven is dus verplicht! Dit doe je door te mailen naar jef.gent@hotmail.com.

Tweespraak over de eurocrisis

Tweespraak is een Kulak-lezingenreeks waarin duo's van bekende, scherpe tongen reflecteren - elk vanuit een specifieke invalshoek - over de grote en immer actuele thema's van de politiek en de politieke wetenschappen: oorlog en vrede, welvaart en solidariteit, rechtvaardigheid, Europese integratie, populisme,...

Dit tweesprak over de toekomst van de euro (in Engels) staat open voor iedereen die zich wil laten verrassen; voor iedereen die interesse heeft in politiek en op zoek is naar een tikkeltje meer diepgang, een bredere horizon!

Débat Midi de la Méditerranée
May 8

Lors de ce nouveau rendez-vous des Midis de la Méditerranée, nous ferons un bilan des nouveaux enjeux pour la société civile et le citoyen en Méditerranée depuis deux ans. Ce sera l’occasion de revenir sur le dialogue interculturel et la coopération entre les deux rives de la Méditerranée pour faire face aux nouveaux défis auxquels la région est confrontée après le Printemps arabe et la crise en Europe.

A cet effet, nous avons rassemblé trois personnes membres du réseau de la Fondation Anna Lindh (FAL), ainsi que Vicent Garcès, député européen et membre du conseil consultatif de l'Assemblée des Citoyens et Citoyennes de la Méditerranée (ACM).

Antwerp Debate Competition: Europa in je buurt

Are you fluent in Dutch and ready to rumble?! Yes?! Perfect, a team debate contest is being organised in Antwerp for May 8 in the afternoon just for that purpose. You can also win a few prizes along the way.

If you are interested in participating or setting up a debate team to compete, register on the website by May 1 and let us know by writing to our email address.

The local sections are organising their own departures for the event. JEF Leuven is organising its own trip from the Leuven central station so get in contact with them if you're departing from Leuven.


Soirée-débat: L'Europe Sociale
May 14

Alors que les dirigeants européens tentent de trouver des solutions pour soutenir les Etats membres qui, un à un, s’enfoncent un peu plus dans la crise, les premières pages des quotidiens sont rythmées, semaine après semaine, par des annonces de restructurations de plus en plus lourdes à travers l’Europe. Le chômage ne cesse d’augmenter et cette augmentation est caractérisée par un taux de chômage des jeunes particulièrement alarmant.

Quelles réponses l’Union européenne peut-elle apporter à la crise de l’emploi? Comment restaurer la confiance de l’opinion publique envers la construction européenne dans ce contexte? Ce sont autant de questions qui seront débattues lors de cette rencontre.

Debate: Restoring Confidence in the Eurozone
May 14

PubAffairs Bruxelles is organizing a debate which will concern the restoring of confidence in the euro-zone and in the European project in the light of the Cyprus bailout. Speakers and event details will be announced later this week.

Eyes on Europe: 2 Years of Arab Spring

May 15

JEF Leuven is organizing yet another Eyes on Europe event, this time to reflect on the 2nd anniversary of the Arab Spring. In the light of that, the Arab journalists will critically analyze the role of the EU in the Arab spring.
They will tackle the following questions: What is the EU doing and why? What should the EU be doing? How is the Union perceived in the Arab world?

The names of the speakers and location will be provided soon so stay tuned.

International Seminar: Young European Peers
July 17-27

Young European Peers (YEP), is a youth exchange which brings together 28 young people from 7 different countries from all over Europe (Armenia, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, Greece, Luxembourg and Norway), to learn more about Human Rights, the European Union and Public Speaking.

The project, which is taking place in Brussels from 17th-27th of July 2013, will empower its participants through fierce debate and intensive workshops.
