Executive Update

Like many student organizations, ASUM is currently in the middle of elections season. If you are interested in student issues, advocacy work, the legislative process, or civic engagement, ASUM may be the perfect place for you, and applying for a chapter or legislative position is a great way to get involved! If you are interested in one of the positions below but are unsure of how to apply, please shoot me an email and we can set up a time to chat!
Chapter Executive Positions

Applying for executive positions a great way to get involved in ASUM! We need all kinds of students to help our organization thrive. Each Chapter will be seeking students to fill President, Vice-President, Finance Director, Programming Director, Recruitment Director, and Public Relations Director roles. Many of these positions are paid, and all of them offer an opportunity to learn new leadership skills. You do not have to be an existing ASUM member to apply. We are looking for students that are interested in serving the UM System student body authentically and diligently.

Mizzou: Applications close on Tuesday, April 27th at 5 pm. Use this link to apply! Contact us at asum@missouri.edu if you have any questions.

Missouri S&T: Nominations for officer positions are open now and will close in 2 weeks. Reach out to Chapter President, Amanda Aiken at ama7gr@mst.edu for more details on how to apply.

UMKC: Officer applications will be opening this week. Look out on social media for the application link and deadline. If you have questions you can reach out to Chapter President, Alexus Buckert at anb839@mail.umkc.edu.

Legislative Director Positions

In addition to campus positions, Legislative Director applications are now open. ASUM hires 2 Legislative Directors who are in charge of planning and facilitating the ASUM Legislative Internship Program. The position allows for hands-on legislative experience and is great for students interested in a future in advocacy or policy work. Both Legislative Directors are paid a $9,000 stipend for the work they do.

You do not have to have the legislative experience to apply. We are looking for students that are self-motivated, innovative, and willing to learn! The deadline was extended, and all applications are now due this Wednesday, April 21st at 12 midnight. If you are interested in applying send me an email at ccs594@mail.missouri.edu!

Legislative Update

Thank you to all our students, lawmakers, interns, and staff who took part in making our 2021 Student Advocacy Week a success. We appreciate the time all of you took to get engaged and participate in this year’s event. Moving forward, our team will continue testifying in committee hearings and communicating with lawmakers as our bills of interest make their way around the legislature as both chambers continue to hold committee hearings and debate the FY 2022 budget.

Updates on the legislation we are supporting can be found here.

Our interns have transitioned from research into policy writing. Our interns are now peer-reviewing each other’s policy proposals to ensure the best possible policy implementation of their policy solutions. Once they are finished receiving feedback from another intern, they’ll polish up their policy proposal document. Next week, they’ll be looking at developing outreach strategies on how to communicate these solutions to the student body.

Here are some news articles we had our eye on this week:

More updates on our Legislative Team and happenings in the Capitol will be provided in future newsletters, so stay tuned!

Campus Chapter Mid-Semester Updates

Missouri University of Science and Technology:

This week at S&T we opened nominations for all our executive positions! They will be open for two weeks, and at our next meeting we will have presentations from each member running for a position and then we will vote. We also have a few events we are working on planning. We are going to have another in-person movie night to watch V for Vendetta within the next two weeks. We are also planning to have an end-of-the-year bonfire to celebrate our next exec and to thank our current exec board. Missouri S&T updates are written by S&T Vice-President, Chrysalin Martin.

University of Missouri Kansas City

With various local elections in Kansas City taking place less than two weeks ago, we have seen just how important it is to work to get out the vote. We can’t wait to keep working to engage our fellow Roos with more events in the future! UMKC updates are written by UMKC ASUM Chapter Vice-President, Sagi Rudnick.

University of Missouri St. Louis

UMSL ASUM will soon begin election processes for the next academic year. Applications to run for elected positions are still open. Additionally, we are working on hosting a socially distanced drive-in movie event to end the semester. UMSL updates are written by UMSL ASUM Chapter Vice-President, Emma Cogdill.
