Community Calendar & Activist Guide
JUNETEENTH EDITION

<<First Name>>,

June 18th, 2021

Welcome to our monthly community calendar and activist guide! We'll send this out every month to keep you updated on all AJC events and some community opportunities to show up. Take a look and see what's coming up!

We’re one day away from Juneteenth, '21, and the news has swept the country; Juneteenth is now a national holiday. While we agree Juneteenth has always had recognition as a special day for Black folks, making it a national holiday does not change the current state of Black America. This action is performative and meant to appease the fire we feel daily. Unfortunately, these actions are not new in our communities. They give us street names, holidays such as MLK Day and now Juneteenth as an illusion of inclusion, but there is little action towards creating tangible equity.

Ironically, Texas Governor Greg Abbot signed house bill 3979, also known as the Critical Race Theory bill, on the same day. House bill 3979 limits teacher's ability to discuss current events and prohibits students from receiving credit for participating in civic activities. If teachers do discuss current events, they must "give deference to both sides."

Teachers will be forced to be neutral on controversial topics leaving little room for open and honest discussions about race in classrooms while opening the door for less-educated students. Sadly, this bill is rooted in profound privilege and shows how far lawmakers are willing to perpetuate white supremacy in this state and country.

" How do you explain the significance of #Juneteenth in Texas - its place of origin - when you can't talk about Critical Race Theory in classrooms." - Chas Moore ED.

Juneteenth ATX 2021

Despite it all, as the saying goes, "The show must go on." and this is a show you don't want to miss. We are excited to be immersing ourselves in the community, celebrating our livelihood despite the odds.

We invite you to join us, Saturday, June 19th aka #JUNETEENTH starting at 10 am for Juneteenth, Stay Black and Live 2.0. The theme for 2021 reflects on Black people's willpower to liberate themselves.

Join us at 5pm, as we discuss, The Vanishing Half by: Brit Bennett

From The New York Times-bestselling author of The Mothers, a stunning new novel about twin sisters, inseparable as children, who ultimately choose to live in two very different worlds, one black and one white.

“The Vignes twin sisters will always be identical. But after growing up together in a small, southern black community and running away at age sixteen, it's not just the shape of their daily lives that is different as adults, it's everything: their families, their communities, their racial identities. Many years later, one sister lives with her black daughter in the same southern town she once tried to escape. The other secretly passes for white, and her white husband knows nothing of her past. Still, even separated by so many miles and just as many lies, the fates of the twins remain intertwined. What will happen to the next generation, when their own daughters' storylines intersect?
Weaving together multiple strands and generations of this family, from the Deep South to California, from the 1950s to the 1990s, Brit Bennett produces a story that is at once a riveting, emotional family story and a brilliant exploration of the American history of passing. Looking well beyond issues of race, The Vanishing Half considers the lasting influence of the past as it shapes a person's decisions, desires, and expectations, and explores some of the multiple reasons and realms in which people sometimes feel pulled to live as something other than their origins.”
