Sport England released the results from their Active Lives: Children and Young People survey today which reports that 82% of children are not meeting activity guidelines set by government.

Responding to the survey, Emma Boggis, CEO at the Alliance said:

“As a nation we must declare that enough is enough. Today’s results confirm that our children and young people are not active enough to be happy and healthy and collectively we are in danger of breeding a generation of children that will die earlier than their parents.

"The research we undertook in ‘Why are we failing our children?’ has shown that this crisis has been building for over forty years. It must stop now. This is why we have started a campaign which calls for every child to have the fundamental #RightToBeActive. We want to work with government to solve this crisis."

Culminating at BBC Sports Personality of the Year, the #BigThankYou is an opportunity for sports clubs, projects and fitness groups to acknowledge their volunteers. Gary Lineker, Clare Balding and Gabby Logan will present the show live from Birmingham's Genting Arena on Sunday 16 December.

Community sport and recreation clubs and groups can be part of the action by celebrating their outstanding volunteers, sharing their stories, posting pictures on social media and thanking them through the hashtag #BigThankYou in the lead up to the show.

We’ve had great success on the night in previous years and would love to get #BigThankYou trending again, to promote all the outstanding work you guys do for the nation. So be sure to get everyone you know involved – from coaches to cleaners, from trustees to parents, groundskeepers and amateur officials.

All you need to do is encourage them to jump on Twitter at 8:15pm when they announce the Unsung Hero Award, and use the hashtag #BigThankYou in their thank you message.

And don’t forget, if you need more volunteers to help out, pop over to our free online volunteer finder where you’ll find thousands of people eager to lend a hand.

Without all the amazing volunteers, sport in England simply wouldn’t happen. No gold medals. No cheering crowds. None of it.

All of your energy and enthusiasm helps make us a healthier, happier nation.  And now we want to help you. We are working with Sport England to learn more about your volunteering experiences. By taking this 10-minute survey, you could help us to improve the support and opportunities available to volunteers.

We know you give up plenty of your time already. But 10 minutes more could make a massive difference to volunteers across England.
Help us make sport better. A #BigThankYou to you in advance.
