ABFM 2012 in NYC a BIG Success!

With more than 300 attendees and more than 100 paper and research presentations, ABFM’s 2012 Annual Conference this past October at the Marriott Midtown East Side in New York City, hosted by the NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, provded to live up to some pretty high expectations.

“The New York conference proved to be a great success,” said Jim Savage, ABFM Chair. “New York registered the highest attendance and produced our largest registration revenues and donor sponsorships of our past six conferences.”

Treasurer Succession Announced

Bryan Sullivan to turn over position to Deborah Carroll

Among the items discussed during the business meeting at the 2012 ABFM Conference in New York City on October 12th, longtime ABFM Treasurer Bryan Sullivan announced he would be stepping down from the position, following a transition of duties.

ABFM Chair Jim Savage and Chair-Elect Scott Pattison selected Deborah Carroll, Assistant Professor at The University of Georgia and former ABFM Executive Committee member, to the position of Assistant Treasurer, with her assuming the Office of Treasurer following completion of the transition.

“It is an honor and a privilege to be appointed Treasurer of ABFM,” Carroll said. “I very much look forward to the opportunity to give back to a community of practitioners and scholars that I have been involved with and benefited greatly from for more than a decade.”

Strong Leaders Depart Exec

2012 sees the end of the tenures of several members of the ABFM Executive Committee who provided valuable leadership and service over the past several years.

Jordan Joins ODU

Dr. Meagan Jordan, member of the ABFM Executive Committee and Chair of the Membership Committee has joined the faculty of Old Dominion University's Dept. of Urban Studies and Public Administration.  Dr. Jordan was previously at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.  She is a graduate of the University of Kentucky Martin School of Public Policy and Administration. 

Robbins deals with challenges of elected practitioner

Tenure as City Comptroller exposes ABFM Secretariat to realities of municipal finance, politics

Students have a tendency to spark unusual responses from their teachers. For Donijo Robbins-Dejonge, an Associate Professor of Grand Valley State University and ABFM Secretariat, one such student convinced her to take on a two-year odyssey into elected municipal financial office.

"When I was at the 2010 ABFM conference in Omaha," Robbins recalled, "I received an email from a student of mine who works for the City (of Grand Rapids). In that email he suggested that I apply for the comptroller position."

"I remember laughing out loud and wondering if the student was really serious."

The student, however, did not give up.
