Cara Boothroyd accepting her scholarship at the
Student Send-Off  June 2013

Cara is one of our three scholarship recipeints for the 2013-14 academic year. We asked her to write a bio for us to share so you could get to know her outstanding achievements and why she is so deserving of the Greater Binghamton PSAA scholarship.

My name is Cara Boothroyd and I am from Endwell, NY.  I am a Food Science major with aspirations of attending medical school.  I had a busy freshmen year which included joining and participating in the Alpha Epsilon Delta National Preprofessional Health Society, THON, the club tennis team, and the Food Science Club. I was very fortunate to be selected as an undergraduate researcher working with Dr. Robert Roberts on a study involving the health benefits of probiotics. As a lucky holder of season tickets to the PSU football games, I quickly became a fan of O'Brien's Lions.  I also enjoyed watching basketball games, gymnastic meets and hockey games. In the spring I received the Freshmen Presidents Award and notification of my selection as a health education peer counselor.  I am excited to be back on campus participating in club cross country races as well as Penn State Football games!

Our scholarship is made possible by generous contributions from our members and chapter fundraising efforts.  The scholarship is awarded based on a number of criteria including financial aid, GPA and candidates are asked to write a personal essay.  We are proud to have the ability to award scholarships to three local students thanks to our membership.  Please consider making a donation today.

Join alumni, family and friends from the Greater Binghamton Chapter for an exclusive viewing on the documentary 365 Days: A Year in Happy Valley.

Tickets may be purchased online for $12/person.

This feature-length documentary film follows the Penn State and State College community at-large from September 1, 2012 to August 31, 2013.  The documentary showcases how the school, students and locals are rising above it all and creating a community worth celebrating in spite of the events that have garnered national attention. The film is a “year-in-the-life” look at State College – its people, its surroundings, and its communal commitment to the best it has to offer.

Join us after the film at the County Seat Tavern for conversation and beverages.

Bob Malecki is the current treasurer of the Greater Binghamton Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association.  He graduated in 1970 from the College of Agriculture with a major in Forest Science.  Bob has had many careers with his Penn State degree including Manager, Licensing & Environmental – New York State Electric & Gas, Manager – Right of Way/Permitting at Access Midstream Horseheads, NY and President – Malecki Consulting, LLC Binghamton, NY.

Bob and his wife, Linda, who is also an alumni (EDU ’70) and board member, live in the Town of Chenango.  They have two children, Josh (PSU BS 2001; MS 2004) and Sarah (U of Rochester BS and MS 2005), and two grandchildren, Lucas (PSU 2031) and Alaina (PSU 2034).

When looking back on the time he spent as a student at University Park Bob likes to remember the beauty and tranquility of outside classes during the two summer terms he spent on campus.  He also spent two years of his college career successfully courting his lovely wife.

Rec Hall is Bob’s favorite place on University Park campus.  There he got to watch his son, Josh, compete as a member of the men’s gymnastics team and enjoyed JoePa’s Pep rally antics.  He also enjoys visiting Whisker’s at the Nittany Lion Inn, eating at Spats and Peanut Butter Swirl ice cream from the Creamery.
