Blue/White Weekend Recap

Blue and White weekend was a great success!  Despite a bit of snow and some winds the tailgate was delicious. Thanks to all the alumni who stopped by to see us. We are excited to announce that our 5k team, The Greater Binghamton Spiedies, raised nearly $1000, underwriting the cost of at least 6 athletes in the 2013 Summer Special Olympics at Penn State. The team was made up of 10 members: Dave Byerly, Nick Corcoran, Zach Egan, Mike Ergler, Kate Miller-Corcoran, Pam and Rick Poling, Dick Smith, Kurt Steinhauser and Heidi Trecoske. THANK YOU to everyone who supported the team either by running, cheering, or with a donation. We cannot wait until next year!

Our Greater Binghamton Chapter now has our VERY OWN WEBSITE!!  A big thank you to our chapter member, Sarah Dyer, for agreeing to be our webmaster!  Be sure to check it out here to keep updated on special events!

As everyone likely knows, Penn State is playing Syracuse on August 31 at the New Meadowlands Stadium.  We are currently putting together a bus trip package and plan to unveil it via email and our social media outlets soon.  A huge thank you to Bob Malecki for coordinating this event.

TV TAILGATES: For the upcoming football season we are planning to host 3 TV Tailgate parties for our chapter.  One will be held in the  Binghamton area, one in the Montrose area and one in the Sayre/Athens area.

We have selected to have the Sayre/Athens TV Tailgate party at the Rail House Restaurant & Taproom at 366 Broad Street in Waverly, NY.  Check out their website!  One of the owners spent some time at Penn State where he learned how to bartend so they know our crowd and appreciate our school!  We are looking for input for which game we should choose to watch in Waverly.  Cast your vote here.

If you have a suggestion for a great place to watch a Penn State football game, please share your ideas with us!!

You can now join the chapter or renew your membership online!  We are now accepting payments through our PayPal account which you can access through the membership tab on our website or our blog.

Heidi Trecoske is a Penn State Alumni that lives in Montrose, Pennsylvania.  She graduated in 2005 from the College of Communications and is a new member to the Greater Binghamton Chapter.  She is in the early stages of getting a mini-THON set up at a local high school.

A mini-THON is much like THON but on a smaller scale.  Students from elementary through high school all over the country participate in their own mini-THONs to help raise money, awareness and find a cure to Pediatric Cancer.

As a student at Penn State Heidi was very much involved in Penn State Dance Marathon and her experience and passion for THON is going make this event sensational.  She will be formally asking the principal of Montrose High School, Mr. Tallerico, if we can hold a Mini-THON at their school. The Montrose High School would be one high school that is a part of many in Pennsylvania that contribute to the Main Campus Dance Marathon totals in February.

To make this happen we will need a committee to help plan the mini-THON. If anyone would like to help or has questions or comments please contact Heidi at or (570)-877-1708.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for Saturday, August 10th for our annual Greater Binghamton Chapter golf tournament!  The shotgun start is at 8:30 am at Afton golf course.  For anyone who isn’t a golfer but still wants to spend time with your fellow alumni you can join in on the all-you-can-eat buffet following the tournament.  Contact Bob Malecki, Chairperson, at to register your team or for more information!

The Greater Binghamton Chapter would like to extend a heart-felt thank you to Phyllis Smith for sewing the “Group of Distinction” patches on our chapter banner.  Phyllis is the proud Penn State parent of alumni Kate Miller-Corcoran.

Each year our chapter awards three scholarships to deserving undergraduate students. We asked each recipient if they would share a bit about themselves with our chapter.  You can find out more about recipients Scott Johnson, Jr. and Carli Ligouri as well as other current Penn State students making us PENN STATE PROUD on our blog.  Please keep us informed of our current students’ accomplishments via facebook or email.

We would like to urge you to participate in electing the trustees who represent us as alumni on the Board of Trustees.  Ballots for the election of alumni trustee arrive via email.  If you have not received your ballot or if you have any questions regarding the election process, qualifications, or about the role of the Board of Trustees in the governance of Penn State, contact the Board Office at 814-865-2521 or at

The deadline to submit your vote is 9:00 a.m. (EST), on Thursday, May 2, 2013. The names of the winning candidates will be announced at the Board of Trustees meeting on Friday, May 3, 2013.
